Radiation protection of sodium alginate and its regulatory effect on intestinal microflora in mice.

Prolonged or high-dose exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) can cause damage to normal tissues of the body. Therefore, it is imperative to find effective radiation protective agents to mitigate IR-induced damage. This study evaluated the effects of sodium alginate (SA) on the radiation protection and modulatory effects of gut microorganisms using a 60Coγ-induced damage model in mice. Results showed that SA could reduce the damage of hematopoietic system; and alleviate the oxidative damage in irradiated mice by inhibiting the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and increasing the activities of supe

Decreased patient exposure to ionizing radiation during interventional rheumatology procedures after optimization of protection.

OBJECTIVES: To decrease radiation exposure of patients undergoing interventional rheumatology procedures, without adversely affecting quality of care. METHODS: The radiation dose received, assessed by the dose-area product (DAP), was measured during 283 intraarticular injections performed under fluoroscopic guidance between May and July 2013. Then, three steps were taken to decrease patients' radiation exposure: a copper filter was added, the anti-scatter grid was removed, and exposure cell sensitivity was set at the highest value. DAP was measured during 158 intraarticular injections perform

Dosimetric investigation of the solar erythemal UV radiation protection provided by beards and moustaches.

A dosimetric technique has been employed to establish the amount of erythemal ultraviolet radiation (UVR) protection provided by facial hair considering the influence of solar zenith angle (SZA) and beard-moustache length. The facial hair reduced the exposure ratios (ERs) to approximately one-third of those to the sites with no hair. The variation in the ERs over the different sites was reduced compared with the cases with no beard. The ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) provided by the facial hair ranged from 2 to 21. The UPF decreases with increasing SZA. The minimum UPF was in the 53-62° r

Protection against ultraviolet radiation by commercial summer clothing: need for standardised testing and labelling.

BACKGROUND: The use of clothing as a means of sun protection has been recommended in recent education campaigns. Contrary to popular opinion, however, some fabrics provide insufficient ultraviolet (UV) protection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We investigated 236 apparel textiles of the spring/summer collections 2000 and 2001. In accordance with the forthcoming European standard the UV protection factor (UPF) of the fabrics was determined spectrophotometrically. RESULTS: Seventy-eight (33%) fabrics had UPF < 15, 45 (19%) had UPF = or > 15 and < 30, and 113 (48%) had UPF = or > 30 (30+). More than 70

Intravesical Liposomal Tacrolimus Protects against Radiation Cystitis Induced by 3-Beam Targeted Bladder Radiation.

PURPOSE: We primarily determined whether the small animal radiation research platform could create a rat radiation cystitis model via targeted bladder irradiation (phase I). The response to treating early phase radiation cystitis in rats with transurethral catheter instillation of liposomal tacrolimus was also examined (phase II). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In phase I 16 adult female Sprague Dawley® rats were used. Metabolic urination patterns were analyzed before and after exposure to 20, 30 or 40 Gy radiation. In phase II irradiated rats were randomly assigned to receive a single instillation o

Radiation-induced neoplastic transformation in vitro: evidence for a protective effect at low doses of low LET radiation.

The study of radiation-induced transformation in vitro has long been an experimental approach to examine mechanisms underlying radiation carcinogenesis. Even though the major concern of exposure to radiation is the risk of cancer induction at low radiation doses, most laboratory mechanistic studies have focused on high dose effects. This, coupled with the fact that epidemiologic data are rarely powerful enough to accurately discriminate this risk at doses <5 cGy, has led in recent years to an increased effort to study low dose effects using the endpoint of neoplastic transformation in vitro. Protective mechanisms and therapeutic promise of nanomaterials in radiation-induced diseases.

Radiotherapy is one of the common approaches for tumor treatment by suppressing tumor growth, which, however, inevitably leads to severe damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Although significant advances have been made in the development of radioprotective agents, the high toxicity and low bioavailability are still the main obstacles to their applications. Recently, the emergence of nanotechnology has brought promising solutions to address these challenges. Owing to their unique physicochemical properties, such as precisely controllable size, functionalized surfaces, excellent biocompatibili

Protective Role of Shenmai Injection on Radiation-Induced Heart Injury.

Radiation-induced heart injury (RIHI) limits the dose delivery of radiotherapy for thoracic cancer. Shenmai injection (SMI) is reported to have potential cytoprotective properties and is commonly used in cardiovascular diseases. So, we aimed to investigate the potential protective effects of SMI treatment on RIHI. In this study, we established the RIHI model using Sprague-Dawley rats and H9c2 cell line. In vivo, the biochemical assay was used to measure serum cardiac injury-related biomarkers and echocardiography to evaluate heart function. The pathological analysis was also applied to observe

Study on the protective effect and mechanism of Liriodendrin on radiation enteritis in mice.

Patients receiving pelvic or abdominal radiotherapy may experience acute and/or chronic side effects due to gastrointestinal changes. However, effective medicine for treating radiation enteritis has not been found yet. Sargentodoxa cuneata is a famous Chinese medicine used to treat intestinal inflammation, and our research team has found the main biologically active compound through its extraction, which is Liriodendrin. In this study, we found that Liriodendrin can reduce the expression of Cer, Cer1P and S1P in the sphingolipid pathway, thereby reducing the histological damage to the intestin

Protective effect of trimetazidine in radiation-induced cardiac fibrosis in mice.

Radiation-induced heart damage is a serious side effect caused by radiotherapy, especially during the treatment of cancer near the chest. Trimetazidine is effective at reducing inflammation in the heart, but how it affects radiation-induced cardiac fibrosis (RICF) is unknown. To investigate the potential effect and molecular mechanism, we designed this project with a C57BL6 male mouse model supposing trimetazidine could inhibit RICF in mice. During the experiment, mice were randomly divided into six groups including a control group (Con), radiation-damaged model group (Mod) and four experiment

Novel Indications for Commonly Used Medications as Radiation Protectants in Spaceflight.

In the space environment, the traditional radioprotective principles of time, distance, and shielding become difficult to implement. Additionally, the complex radiation environment inherent in space, the chronic exposure timeframe, and the presence of numerous confounding variables complicate the process of creating appropriate risk models for astronaut exposure. Pharmaceutical options hold tremendous promise to attenuate acute and late effects of radiation exposure in the astronaut population. Pharmaceuticals currently approved for other indications may also offer radiation protection, modula

Protective Effect of Chitin Urocanate Nanofibers against Ultraviolet Radiation.

Urocanic acid is a major ultraviolet (UV)-absorbing chromophore. Chitins are highly crystalline structures that are found predominantly in crustacean shells. Alpha-chitin consists of microfibers that contain nanofibrils embedded in a protein matrix. Acid hydrolysis is a common method used to prepare chitin nanofibrils (NFs). We typically obtain NFs by hydrolyzing chitin with acetic acid. However, in the present study, we used urocanic acid to prepare urocanic acid chitin NFs (UNFs) and examined its protective effect against UVB radiation. Hos: HR-1 mice coated with UNFs were UVB irradiated (30

Multifaceted pathways protect human skin from UV radiation.

The recurrent interaction of skin with sunlight is an intrinsic constituent of human life, and exhibits both beneficial and detrimental effects. The apparent robust architectural framework of skin conceals remarkable mechanisms that operate at the interface between the surface and environment. In this Review, we discuss three distinct protective mechanisms and response pathways that safeguard skin from deleterious effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The unique stratified epithelial architecture of human skin along with the antioxidant-response pathways constitutes the important defense mech

Glycine betaine, a beer component, protects radiation-induced injury.

Human whole-blood was exposed to 137Cs gamma-rays or 50 keV/microm carbon ions in the presence or absence of glycine betaine, a beer component in vitro. The dicentrics of chromosome aberrations in human lymphocytes were significantly (p < 0.05) reduced by glycine betaine after irradiation with 4 Gy of either gamma-rays or carbon ions. The maximum protection by glycine betaine for gamma-rays or carbon ions was 37% and 20%, respectively. C3H/He female mice, aged 14 weeks, received an i.p. injection of glycine betaine 15 min before whole-body irradiation with gamma-rays or 50 keV/microm carbon io

Protective role of superoxide dismutases against ionizing radiation in yeast.

The protective role of superoxide dismutases (SODs) against ionizing radiation, which generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) harmful to cellular function, was investigated in the wild-type and in mutant yeast strains lacking cytosolic CuZnSOD (sod1Delta), mitochondrial MnSOD (sod2Delta), or both SODs (sod1Deltasod2Delta). Upon exposure to ionizing radiation, there was a distinct difference between these strains in regard to viability and the level of protein carbonyl content, which is the indicative marker of oxidative damage to protein, intracellular H2O2 level, as well as lipid peroxidation

The circadian clock protects against acute radiation-induced dermatitis.

Radiation-induced dermatitis is a common occurrence in cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy (RT) and is caused when ionizing radiation (IR) induces DNA strand breaks in skin cells. The wide use of RT in cancer treatments makes it important to minimize RT-induced toxicities including radiodermatitis. This study sought to determine if the circadian clock plays a protective role in minimizing radiodermatitis. We treated mice in control (Day Shift), environmentally-disrupted (Rotating Shift) and genetically-disrupted (Per 1/2-/-) circadian conditions with 6 Gy of IR to the whole body. Ther
