BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Peginterferon alfa and ribavirin could cause various cutaneous reactions. Treatment-related cutaneous reactions are common, and treatable complications can contribute to the treatment discontinuation.
METHODS: We performed a 6-year prospective study of cutaneous reactions in 271 patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with peginterferon and ribavirin.

In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study, treatment of measles patients with ribavirin resulted in shorter and less severe disease, as well as fewer complications, compared with patients in the placebo, group. Ribavirin was well tolerated. There were no side effects or changes in laboratory values that could be associated with drug-related toxicity. Since reported vaccine failures may increase as immunization levels rise, the use of a safe and effective therapeutic agent, such as ribavirin, will be necessary to treat these cases, as well as those occurring in unvaccinated individuals.

The multiplication in tissue cultures of three isolates of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis virus as well as the Edmonston strain of measles virus was observed to be inhibited by various concentrations of the antiviral agent ribavirin (1-beta-D-ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide). The blockage of viral replication by ribavirin could be reversed by the simultaneous addition of equimolar concentrations of either guanosine or adenosine. Ribavirin ampoule formulation remains a major challenge in managing Lassa fever disease. Lassa fever is an endemic viral hemorrhagic fever in the West Africa subregion, which has high-dose ribavirin as the standard of care. The high-dose therapy required makes the 200 mg/ml ampoule dosing of ribavirin a daunting task to administer, especially during disease outbreaks. This commentary highlights the challenges and makes a passionate call for vial dosage adjustment to fit the high-dose requirement of Lassa fever disease.

We report a case of Argentine hemorrhagic fever diagnosed in a woman in Belgium who traveled from a disease-endemic area. Patient management included supportive care and combination therapy with ribavirin and favipiravir. Of 137 potential contacts, including friends, relatives, and healthcare and laboratory workers, none showed development of clinical symptoms of this disease.
