Transvaginal sonographic tubal patency testing using air and saline solution as contrast media in a routine infertility clinic setting.

Tubal patency testing by transvaginal sonography has been implemented in our infertility clinic since 1991. We report our experience with this technique during the last year of routine outpatient activity. A total of 154 infertile patients, including three patients on two occasions, underwent tubal patency testing by transvaginal sonography; 36 also underwent laparoscopy or hysterosalpingography, with a further three undergoing both. A detailed account of the method used to visualize the passage of air and saline through the salpinx is described. The 'gold standard' for tubal patency was lapar

Evaluation of hemostatic analytes after use of hypertonic saline solution combined with colloids for resuscitation of dogs with hypovolemia.

The effects of hypertonic saline solution (HTSS) combined with colloids on hemostatic analytes were studied in 15 dogs. The analytes evaluated included platelet counts, one-stage prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, von Willebrand's factor antigen (vWf:Ag), and buccal mucosa bleeding times. The dogs were anesthetized, and jugular phlebotomy was used to induced hypovolemia (mean arterial blood pressure = 50 mm of Hg). Treatment dogs (n = 12) were resuscitated by infusion (6 ml/kg of body weight) of 1 of 3 solutions: HTSS combined with 6% dextran 70, 6% hetastarch, or 10% pen

Comparison of the use of standard heparin and 0.9% saline as lock solution in hemodialysis catheter: Importance of closure technique.

BACKGROUND: Bleeding and thrombotic occlusion are complications of Central venous catheters. When selecting a catheter lock solution, factors such as bleeding, thrombotic occlusion, infection, and cost-effectiveness must be considered. METHODS: The study included 35 patients who used heparin as a locking solution and 35 patients who used 0.9% saline, retrospectively. In our center, after injecting the solution equal to the catheter lumen volume from the syringe, approximately 1 cc of locking solution is left in the syringe, the catheter is locked and the syringe is removed from the catheter a

Transcriptional regulation of esophageal, intestinal, and branchial solute transporters by salinity, growth hormone, and cortisol in Atlantic salmon.

In marine habitats, Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) imbibe seawater (SW) to replace body water that is passively lost to the ambient environment. By desalinating consumed SW, the esophagus enables solute-linked water absorption across the intestinal epithelium. The processes underlying esophageal desalination in salmon and their hormonal regulation during smoltification and following SW exposure are unresolved. To address this, we considered whether two Na+ /H+ exchangers (Nhe2 and -3) expressed in the esophagus contribute to the uptake of Na+ from lumenal SW. There were no seasonal changes in e

Pollution and Cleaning of PDMS Pervaporation Membranes after Recovering Ethyl Acetate from Aqueous Saline Solutions.

The removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from wastewater containing nonvolatile salts has become an important and interesting case of the application of the pervaporation (PV) process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of salts on the PV removal of ethyl acetate from wastewater using a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane. The fouled membrane was then characterized via scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) to investigate salt permeation. The membrane backflushing process was carried out by periodically flushing the permeate side of th

Using rhodamine 6G-modified gold nanoparticles to detect organic mercury species in highly saline solutions.

We developed a gold nanoparticle (Au NP)-based fluorescence sensor for the detection of mercury ions in aqueous solutions. After introducing bovine serum albumin (BSA) to a solution of rhodamine 6G (R6G) and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)-modified Au NPs, the as-prepared BSA@R6G/MPA-Au NP probe could sense mercury ions under high salt conditions. This probe operated through a mechanism involving mercury species depositing onto the surfaces of the Au NPs and releasing R6G molecules into the solution, causing the fluorescence intensity of the BSA@R6G/MPA-AuNP solution to increase. We improved th

Evaluating the quality of X-ray irradiated deglycerolized red blood cells stored in saline-adenosine-glucose-mannitol additive solution.

BACKGROUND: Rare phenotype red blood cells (RBCs) are routinely cryopreserved and stored at -80°C for over 10 years. Upon thawing and deglycerolization, RBCs resuspended in saline-adenosine-glucose-mannitol (SAGM) have a limited 24-h shelf-life. There is a lack of international consensus as to whether irradiation of deglycerolized RBCs is necessary for patients at risk of transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of X-ray irradiated deglycerolized RBCs resuspended in SAGM. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Matched RBC components (n = 21 pairs)

Balanced crystalloid solution versus saline in deceased donor kidney transplantation (BEST-Fluids): a pragmatic, double-blind, randomised, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Delayed graft function (DGF) is a major adverse complication of deceased donor kidney transplantation. Intravenous fluids are routinely given to patients receiving a transplant to maintain intravascular volume and optimise graft function. Saline (0·9% sodium chloride) is widely used but might increase the risk of DGF due to its high chloride content. We aimed to test our hypothesis that using a balanced low-chloride crystalloid solution (Plasma-Lyte 148) instead of saline would reduce the incidence of DGF. METHODS: BEST-Fluids was a pragmatic, registry-embedded, multicentre, doubl

Hypertonic saline solution reduces mesenteric microcirculatory dysfunctions and bacterial translocation in a rat model of strangulated small bowel obstruction.

We examined the effects of hypertonic saline (HS) on inflammatory, metabolic variables, and bacterial translocation (BT) in rats submitted to intestinal obstruction and ischemia (IO). Male Wistar rats were submitted to IO and treated, 2 h thereafter, with lactated Ringer's (LR) (4 mL/kg per 5 min, i.v.) or HS (7.5% NaCl, 4 mL/kg per 5 min, i.v.). Twenty-four hours after IO, rats were also submitted to enterectomy/enteroanastomosis to resection of necrotized small bowel.
