"When the Bills Keep on Coming:" the Experiences of Seafood Processors During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Essential workers were at increased risk during the COVID-19 pandemic, including seafood processors who are often rendered invisible within the public sphere. To examine the health and safety concerns of seafood processors, many who are low income or im/migrant workers on H-2B visas, our team conducted qualitative research with 44 participants. We found that in addition to high occupational health hazards that existed before the pandemic, COVID-19 increased workers' financial risks, which put them in more dangerous health and safety positions, since they needed to work through physical and men

Rapid determination of domoic acid in seafood by fluorescence polarization immunoassay using a portable analyzer.

Monitoring phycotoxin accumulation in marine products such as edible shellfish is a regulatory requirement in many countries. Therefore, a simple and rapid onsite quantification method is sought. Herein, we present a fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA), a well-known one-step immunoassay, using a portable fluorescence polarization analyzer for domoic acid (DA), widely referred to as the primary toxin of amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP). To establish FPIA for DA, the matrix effect of methanol, which is widely used to extract DA from shellfish, on FPIA was investigated. To validate this

CE-RAA-CRISPR Assay: A Rapid and Sensitive Method for Detecting Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Seafood.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is one of the major pathogenic Vibrio species that contaminate seafood. Rapid and accurate detection is crucial for avoiding foodborne diseases caused by pathogens and is important for food safety management and mariculture. In this study, we established a system that combines chemically enhanced clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and recombinase-aided amplification (RAA) (CE-RAA-CRISPR) for detecting V. parahaemolyticus in seafood. The method combines RAA with CRISPR-associated protein 12a (Cas12a) for rapid detection in a one-pot reacti

Radiolyo-chemiluminescence of bones and seafood shells - a new, promising method for the detection of food irradiation?

Biomineral substances are dissolved in an alkaline mixture of luminol solution and EDTA. Light emission is observed upon dissolution of irradiated calcium carbonate in mollusk and crustacean shells and calcium hydroxyapatite in bones, showing a significantly increased chemiluminescence compared to unirradiated samples. This enables the determination of exposure to ionizing radiation and in some cases even dosimetry. The method described is simple in sample preparation and fast for the detection of irradiated seafood and poultry.

Valorization of seafood waste into chitosan for sustainable wastewater treatment: Extraction, functionalization, and process applications.

Wastewater generated from industrial and marine activities is considered one of the most pressing global environmental challenges due to the presence of hazardous contaminants, including heavy metals, organic pollutants (such as dyes, phenolic compounds, and pharmaceuticals), and oil-in-water emulsions. At the same time, marine industries generate substantial amounts of crustacean waste that can harm the environment when improperly disposed of. From this valuable marine waste, chitosan, the second most abundant biopolymer after cellulose, can be chemically extracted from crustacean shells such
