Injections and self-help: risk and trust in Ugandan health care.

The paper draws upon research material collected during a one year long ethnographic study on injection use and a WHO funded Injection Practices Research Project, which were both carried out during 1992/1993. The paper examines the changing trends in injection use and practices in the context of the Ugandan health system and in relation to popular views about risk and trust. Generally, people mistrust injections provided at government health institutions and prefer to gain access to injections as symbolic tokens of healing through personal contacts and private ownership of injecting equipment.

[Change in the self-concept of drug-dependent patients in inpatient care].

As a rule, drug addicted people show a distinctly diminished estimate of the value of their selves. It is investigated whether this estimate changes during a inpatient stay on a drug rehabilitation ward and whether the selected methods of investigation form an adequate means of evaluating the therapeutic program. It can be shown that under certain conditions (duration of stay, compliance, problem-solving ability) this is indeed the case. However, it remains an open question, whether the observed amelioration has to be viewed as a non-specific effect of the change of milieu or whether it depend

Self and other directed violence on a closed acute-care ward.

Violence to self and to others on a locked, acute-care unit is reported for a three-year period. Drug abuse correlated strongly with both types of violence. Self-violence appeared to be a more predictable event due to its diagnostic specificity, history of prior violence and timing of the episodes. Assaults occurred more randomly demonstrating only a mild association with schizophrenia, but not with other psychotic disorders.

The Development and Testing of the Hippocratic Heart Failure Self-Care Scale.

BACKGROUND: The adoption of self-care behaviors among patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) is essential for the management of their health condition. However, there is a lack of tools for estimating self-care in CHF patients. We aim to develop and validate the Greek version of the Hippocratic heart failure self-care scale (HHFSCS). METHODS: The scale includes 22 items which are reviewed by a committee of experts. Individuals indicate the frequency at which they follow each self-behavior on a five-point Likert scale. Adult patients with CHF (n = 250) from a General Hospital in Athens p

METHODS: This review followed the Cochrane guidelines for systematic review research and complies with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. The Importance of Technical Devices in the Self-care of Upper Limbs Amputees.

The National Institute of Medical Rehabilitation (NIMR) is engaged in the rehabilitation of posttraumatic patients, including also attending traumatic cases with amputated upper limbs. The lack of upper limbs is a great obstacle in essential functioning for the injured, and that is why we give high priority to planning, constructing and individually adopting appliances for aiding everyday life. Special literature gives distinguished attention to operative techniques and the possibilities of prosthetic devices, but no professional articles present any special devices needed for discharging ever

Glucose self-monitoring in primary care: a survey of current practice.

BACKGROUND: The role of long-term glycaemic control in minimizing long-term complications of diabetes mellitus is evidence-based and national guidelines recommend a target glycosylated haemoglobin level of approximately 7%. Although the role of self-monitoring blood and urine glucose is less well defined, this activity consumes vast National Health Service (NHS) resources. AIMS: The aims of this study were to (i) determine the current practice of glucose self-monitoring in primary care, (ii) determine any changes to therapy made as a result and (iii) compare monitoring and frequency of monito
