Risk of shoulder tendinitis in relation to shoulder loads in monotonous repetitive work.

BACKGROUND: Few studies relate the occurrence of shoulder disorders to quantified ergonomic exposures. This study evaluates the hypothesis that shoulder loads in repetitive work might contribute to the occurrence of shoulder tendinitis. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of 1961 workers in repetitive work and 782 referents. Shoulder loads were quantified at task level and measures of exposures were assigned based on task distribution. Symptoms in combination with clinical criteria defined shoulder tendinitis. RESULTS: The prevalence of shoulder tendinitis was higher among exposed worke

Treatment of locked posterior fracture-dislocations of the shoulder by total shoulder arthroplasty.

Total shoulder arthroplasty is indicated in the treatment of locked posterior fracture-dislocations of the shoulder where there is extensive damage to the articular surfaces of the humerus and glenoid. This report reviews the surgical technique, postoperative rehabilitation program, and functional results of seven shoulders in five patients who had locked posterior dislocations of the shoulder. Activities involving overhead positioning of the arm and heavy lifting continued to be challenging for this group of patients. The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons' Shoulder Score improved from 20.1

Archer's shoulder. Recurrent posterior subluxation and dislocation of the shoulder in two archers.

Two right-handed archers presented with posterior instability of the shoulder. A 19-year-old Japanese and a 26-year-old white male archer developed pain and instability of the shoulder of 6 months' duration. Both had engaged in archery for several years. Both exhibited a positive apprehension test and recurrent posterior subluxation and dislocation by flexing the arm to 80 degrees with internal rotation. Both could reduce the instability with a snap by extending the arm. For the subluxation, Neer's inferior capsular shift procedure via a posterior approach was performed. For the dislocation, a

Increased association of diabetes mellitus with capsulitis of the shoulder and shoulder-hand syndrome.

Sixty consecutive patients with capsulitis of the shoulder (including those with shoulder-hand syndrome) seen in our clinic since 1971 underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (5 with previously recognized diabetes were excluded from this test). Capsulitis was primary in 35, secondary to other factors in 25 subjects. Females (34) out-numbered males (26). Their ages ranged from 40 to 72 years (mean age: 54 years). Sixty control subjects matched for age and sex with the 60 "capsulitis" patients underwent the same OGTT (except one with previously recognized diabetes). We have found diabetes in 17

Forgotten Shoulder ASAP-22: a scapula-inclusive shoulder ecosystem PROM-Pilot study in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty and related pathologies.

BACKGROUND: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) is now the most commonly performed type of shoulder arthroplasty. However, most legacy patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were developed before the widespread adoption of rTSA and often fail to address its unique challenges-particularly those related to altered scapular mechanics, rotational limitations, and instability. The Forgotten Shoulder Adaptive Scapula Analytics and Performance Score (FS ASAP-22) was developed to fill these gaps, utilizing an adaptive scoring model grounded in the "forgotten joint" concept. To our knowledge,

Rate of Shoulder Arthroplasty After Anterior Shoulder Instability Surgery: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent or persistent anterior shoulder instability (ASI), the most common form of shoulder instability, may progress over time to osteoarthritis (OA) necessitating shoulder arthroplasty. Anterior shoulder instability surgery (ASIS) techniques, including soft-tissue and bony augmentation procedures, have been shown to reduce the risk of recurrent dislocation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this review is to evaluate the rates of progression to shoulder arthroplasty, time to conversion to shoulder arthroplasty, OA grades at time of conversion, and clinical outcomes of shoulder arthropla

Passive shoulder occupational exoskeleton reduces shoulder muscle coactivation in repetitive arm movements.

Humans naturally employ muscle coactivation to facilitate a broad range of movements, enhancing joint stability and movement accuracy. However, excessive muscle coactivation can become unfavorable or even detrimental. This phenomenon is often observed in industrial workers who endure repetitive or prolonged joint stress, particularly in areas such as the shoulders. Prolonged stress can result in soft tissue damage and the onset of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). In recent years, there have been efforts to mitigate the emergence of work-related MSDs among industrial workers throu

Association between shoulder coracoacromial arch morphology and anterior instability of the shoulder.

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral instability is a common condition of the shoulder. Glenoid bone loss and humeral head bone loss are well recognized as risk factors for recurrent instability. There are few studies in the literature that examine the role of coracoacromial arch anatomy in the pathogenesis of glenohumeral instability. Previous reports found an association between posterior acromial coverage (PAC) and posterior instability. We hypothesize that coracoacromial arch anatomy is related to anterior shoulder instability. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 50 patients with unidirectio

Cutaneous nerve lesions of the shoulder and arm after arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

Increasing use of shoulder arthroscopy has caused developing awareness of the associated complications. A consecutive series of patients who had undergone arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder was reviewed. The overall incidence of a sensory deficit was 21 (7%) in 304 patients at 2 weeks after operation, and in approximately half (3.3%) of these patients this condition was still present at 8 months' average follow-up. These deficits fell into three distinct patterns, suggesting that damage was occurring to three different nerve branches. Most of these areas of hypesthesia corresponded to lesion

The effects of shoulder morphology on the distribution of shoulder pressure during load carriage.

To enhance the prevention of shoulder pressure injuries in various load-bearing populations, the effects of shoulder morphology on pressure distribution were investigated. In this study, 69 participants underwent three-dimensional scanning, and based on shoulder morphological characteristic indicators, they were classified into four shoulder types. From these, 28 participants were selected to have the pressure within shoulder regions measured using a pressure-sensing vest while carrying a backpack load equivalent to 15% of their body weight. The results indicated that variations in shoulder mo

Septic shoulder presenting as a shoulder dislocation in the pediatric patient: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Shoulder dislocation is relatively uncommon in the younger pediatric population. Because of the relative strength of the surrounding soft tissue structures of the shoulder compared with the proximal humeral physis, subluxation or dislocation resulting from a traumatic event or application of force is rare and instead a proximal humeral physeal injury occurs. Case presentation - We present a 5-year-old male who presented to the office with post-traumatic left shoulder pain for about 1 week. Radiographs of the left shoulder indicated inferior subluxation of the humeral head. He was u

Heterogeneous assessment of shoulder disorders: validation of the Standardized Index of Shoulder Function.

OBJECTIVE: Although 40 assessment tools are described in the literature, very few of them have been correctly validated. The Standardized Index of Shoulder Function (FI2S) encompasses pain, mobility, strength and function. The aim of this work is to describe the FI2S and to study its construct validity, reliability and responsiveness to change. PATIENTS: Fifty-nine patients with non-surgical (rotator cuff lesions, frozen shoulders, osteoarthritis) or post-surgical (acromioplasty, repairs of rotator cuff tears, arthroplasty) shoulder disorders were included. METHODS: The FI2S was compared wit

Anatomical basics, variations, and degenerative changes of the shoulder joint and shoulder girdle.

This paper summarizes the anatomical basics of the shoulder, their variations, and precise definitions, including differential diagnoses. It also describes the characteristic degenerative changes caused by aging. A typical variation (7-15%) is the os acromiale, which forms the triangular epiphysis of the scapular spine. This abnormality must be differentiated from a fracture of the acromion or a pseudarthrosis. Because ossification of the acromion is complete after age 25, the os acromiale should be diagnosed only after this age. The shape of the acromion is a further important feature. In a r

Analysis of collagen and elastic fibers in shoulder capsule in patients with shoulder instability.

This study examined collagen cross-links, collagen fibril diameter and density, amino acid composition, and elastic fibers in shoulder capsule and skin in four patient groups: 1) unidirectional anterior instability (N = 8); 2) multidirectional instability/primary surgery (N = 6); 3) multidirectional instability/revision surgery (N = 6); and 4) no history of instability (N = 5). Compared with normal capsule, capsule from groups 1 and 2 had more stable and reducible collagen cross-links, significantly greater mean collagen fibril diameter, more cysteine, and a higher density of elastin staining.

Milwaukee shoulder with massive bilateral cysts: effective therapy for hydrops of the shoulder.

"Milwaukee shoulder" is often associated with large effusions that cannot be managed with conventional therapy. We describe a 75-year-old man whose massive hydrops of both shoulders was resistant to treatment with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID), multiple aspirations, and injections of corticosteroid. The effusions resolved completely after treatment with oral colchicine and an NSAID containing magnesium.

Osteoarthritis of the shoulder in under-50 year-olds: A multicenter retrospective study of 273 shoulders by the French Society for Shoulder and Elbow (SOFEC).

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the shoulder in under-50 year-olds is rare, and treatment is delicate. Shoulder replacement incurs frequent long-term risk of progression and a high revision rate, making it unsuited to young active patients. The aim of the present study was to determine the epidemiology of shoulder OA in under-50 year-olds and to assess the clinical results of the various treatment options. HYPOTHESIS: The main study hypothesis was that well-conducted non-operative treatment can allow shoulder replacement to be postponed. The secondary hypothesis was that anatomic total s
