In the modern world, individuals with intellectual or communication disabilities face significant challenges in communicating with others. To reduce their communication difficulties, a communication system is designed and developed to convert sign language into text and speech. Dynamic hand gesture recognition (HGR) is a preferred option that focuses on human-computer interactions (HCI). HGR investigation is obtaining increasing attention from investigators globally. Also, regular application in day-to-day life, gesture recognition (GR) is beginning to enter education, virtual reality, automot

In this paper, an accessible pipeline of automated teaching of the Quran to deaf and hard-of-hearing students is proposed based on the identification of Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) postures that match the words of S The piping includes an instructional method that is accessible to both deaf and hard-of-hearing students, necessitating the use of Arabic Sign Language postures to correspond to the words. A designed list of 2,054 labeled images was obtained with local institutions working with deaf users as guidance. In order to be linguistic and unambiguously semantically designated with Qur’anic

A persistent challenge for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals is the communication gap between sign language users and the hearing community, particularly in regions with limited automated translation resources. In Saudi Arabia, this gap is amplified by the reliance on Saudi Sign Language (SSL) and the scarcity of real-time, sentence-level translation systems. This paper presents a real-time system for sentence-level recognition of continuous SSL and direct mapping to natural spoken Arabic. The proposed system operates end-to-end on live video streams or pre-recorded content, extracting spat

Deaf and hard-of-hearing people utilize sign language recognition (SLR) to interconnect. Sign language (SL) is vital for hard-of-hearing and deaf individuals to communicate. SL uses varied hand gestures to speak words, sentences, or letters. It aids in linking the gap of communication between individuals with hearing loss and other persons. Also, it creates comfortable for individuals with hearing loss to convey their feelings. The Internet of Things (IoTs) can help persons with disabilities sustain their desire to attain a good quality of life and permit them to contribute to their economic a

Deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing (DDBHH) individuals experience barriers to accessing cancer screening, including ineffective patient-physician communication when discussing screening recommendations. For other underserved communities, culturally and linguistically aligned community health navigators (CHNs) have been shown to improve cancer screening and care. A needs assessment study was conducted to identify barriers and gather recommendations for CHN training resources. A community-based participatory needs assessment was conducted from May 2022 to June 2022 using three focus groups. Ei

Deaf people who use American Sign Language (ASL) are more likely to use the emergency department (ED) than their hearing English-speaking counterparts and are also at higher risk of receiving inaccessible communication. The purpose of this study is to explore the ED communication experience of Deaf patients. A descriptive qualitative study was performed by interviewing 11 Deaf people who had used the ED in the past 2 years. Applying a descriptive thematic analysis, we developed five themes: (1) requesting communication access can be stressful, frustrating, and time-consuming; (2) perspectives

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) depends critically on hand gesture recognition, which also provides the basis of sign language communication for those with hearing problems. In automatic sign language identification systems, however, the contribution of non-manual elements like head posture and facial emotions has sometimes been disregarded. In order to fully capture the diversity of sign language modalities and to enhance the quality of life of deaf people in the region of Ha'il, we present in this study a dual-stream convolutional neural network (TS-CNN) that separately models hand motions

This study explores domestic violence against deaf and hard-of-hearing adults in Iran-an issue that has received little attention. Using a bilingual questionnaire available in both written Persian and Iranian Sign Language video, we surveyed 384 married or cohabiting deaf adults recruited through social media and deaf associations. Participants reported experiences of physical, psychological, sexual, and economic abuse. Psychological and sexual violence were the most common, especially among women and those in unstable or ended relationships. People who were only partly fluent in sign language

INTRODUCTION: To address communication barriers, minimise social isolation, prevent psychosocial illness and increase the independence of Deaf older adults, a mobile care team consisting of Deaf assistant nurses using sign language was initiated and developed by a nongovernmental organisation in a region in southern Sweden. AIM: To describe Deaf older adults’ experiences receiving support from an NGO-initiated mobile old-age care team for Deaf and sign language-speaking older adults in Sweden. METHODS: A series of 15 individual interviews with four Deaf older adults were analysed via content a

Prior studies suggest that native (born to at least one deaf or signing parent) and non-native signers have different musculoskeletal health outcomes from signing, but the individual and combined biomechanical factors driving these differences are not fully understood. Such group differences in signing may be explained by the five biomechanical factors of American Sign Language that have been previously identified: ballistic signing, hand and wrist deviations, work envelope, muscle tension, and "micro" rests. Prior work used motion capture and surface electromyography to collect joint kinemati

We report on the first in-depth analysis of a specific type of dysnumeria, number-reading deficit, in sign language. The participant, Nomi, is a 45-year-old signer of Israeli Sign Language (ISL). In reading multidigit numbers (reading-then-signing written numbers, the counterpart of reading aloud in spoken language), Nomi made mainly decimal, number-structure errors- reading the correct digits in an incorrect (smaller) decimal class, mainly in longer numbers of 5-6-digits. A unique property of ISL allowed us to rule out the numeric-visual analysis as the source of Nomi's dysnumeria: In ISL, wh

BACKGROUND: Higher educational attainment and income provide cardiovascular protection in the general population. It is unknown if the same effect is seen among Deaf American Sign Language (ASL) users who face communication barriers in health care settings.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine whether educational attainment and/or annual household income were inversely associated with cardiovascular risk in a sample of Deaf ASL users.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 302 Deaf respondents aged 18-88 years from the Deaf Health Survey (2008), an adapted and translated Behavioral Risk Fac

PURPOSE: Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) affect 16% of births in the United States. In this pilot study, we conducted a preliminary evaluation of natural language processing (NLP) in extracting signs and symptoms (SS) of HDP from clinical notes within electronic health records (EHRs).
METHODS: This retrospective observational pilot study used EHR data from patients admitted for labor and birth (N = 83,003 clinical notes from 17,775 patients). Four SS categories were extracted: elevated blood pressure, neurological, renal, and hepatic/hematologic. Five machine learning models and Cli

BACKGROUND: There is a broad appreciation that a diagnosis of depression (D) in the elderly is a strong risk factor for incident dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). Indeed, the two disorders might constitute a dyad, although their causal relationship is uncertain, given the likely bidirectional and compounding effects of social withdrawal and loss of previous activities, and the manifestation of language disturbances, cognitive dysfunction, and social disruption that are typical of both conditions. We argue that language declines in D and AD share common patterns and biological un

WHAT IS THIS SUMMARY ABOUT?: Atopic dermatitis (AD, also called atopic eczema) is a skin disease that that can affect a person for a long time and causes red or flaky skin that can be itchy and uncomfortable. Healthcare providers can prescribe medicated creams and ointments to reduce the visible signs and symptoms of AD, but these treatments are not always enough to keep it under control. A new medicine called abrocitinib is taken every day as a tablet. Abrocitinib works by slowing a part of the body's defense mechanism, called immune response, that is not functioning properly in AD. The clini

Multiple studies have reported mathematics underachievement for students who are deaf, but the onset, scope, and causes of this phenomenon remain understudied. Early language deprivation might be one factor influencing the acquisition of numbers. In this study, we investigated a basic and fundamental mathematical skill, automatic magnitude processing, in two formats (Arabic digits and American Sign Language number signs) and the influence of age of first language exposure on both formats by using two versions of the Number Stroop Test. We compared the performance of individuals born deaf who e

Geometry has been identified as a cognitive domain where deaf individuals exhibit relative strength, yet the neural mechanisms underlying geometry processing in this population remain poorly understood. This fMRI study aimed to investigate the neural correlates of geometry processing in deaf and hearing individuals. Twenty-two adult deaf signers and 25 hearing non-signers completed a geometry decision task. We found no group differences in performance, while there were some differences in parietal activation. As expected, the posterior superior parietal lobule (SPL) was recruited for both grou

The question of apparent discrepancies in short-term memory capacity for sign language and speech has long presented difficulties for the models of verbal working memory. While short-term memory (STM) capacity for spoken language spans up to 7 ± 2 items, the verbal working memory capacity for sign languages appears to be lower at 5 ± 2. The assumption that both auditory and visual communication (sign language) rely on the same memory buffers led to the claims of impairment of STM buffers in sign language users. Yet, no common model deals with both the sensory and linguistic nature of spoken an

In fingerspelling, different hand configurations are used to represent the different letters of the alphabet. Signers use this method of representing written language to fill lexical gaps in a signed language. Using fMRI, we compared cortical networks supporting the perception of fingerspelled, signed, written, and pictorial stimuli in deaf native signers of British Sign Language (BSL). In order to examine the effects of linguistic knowledge, hearing participants who knew neither fingerspelling nor a signed language were also tested. All input forms activated a left fronto-temporal network, in
