This article studies sorption regularities and estimates the strength of 137Cs fixation by various soil horizons in peaty-podzolic-gleyic soils under a model experiment. The interaction time varied from 1 week to 3 months while Cs concentration varied from trace to micromolar concentrations. Alkali activation of fly ash by sodium silicate solutions, forming geopolymeric binders, provides a potential means of treating wastes containing heavy metals. Here, the effects on geopolymer structure of contamination of geopolymers by Cr(VI), Cd(II) and Pb(II) in the forms of various nitrate and chromate salts are investigated. Alginite is a non-ore raw material arising by fossilization of accumulated organic (algae) and inorganic material, particularly clay, carbonates, quartz, and amorphous modification of silicic acid in the aqueous environment. In the present work, soil profiles were sampled 40 days and three years after an accidental pyrite tailing spill from the Aznalcóllar mine (S Spain) in order to figure out the effects of the acidic solution draining from the tailing. The composition of the acidic solution, the mineralogy, and the total and soluble content of the major elements were analysed at varying depths. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long term effect of radiation synovectomy with yttrium-90 silicate in haemophiliac patients with recurrent haemarthrosis.
METHODS: The bleeding frequency and the mobility of the joint were recorded in 16 joints of 14 patients 1 year before radiosynovectomy and during follow up, which ranged from 3 to 6 years. Patients evaluated the effect of their own treatment by completing a questionnaire. Radiographs of the joints were scored by an independent radiologist before treatment.

A small cohort of 194 men with low exposure to fibrous tremolite (mean 0.75 f/ml y) in the mining and milling of vermiculite in South Carolina experienced 51 deaths 15 years or more from first employment. The SMR (all causes) was 1.17 reflecting excess deaths from circulatory disease. There were four deaths from lung cancer and 3.31 expected (SMR 1.21, 95% CI 0.33-3.09). Three of the four deaths were in the lowest exposure category (less than 1 f/ml y); no death was attributed to mesothelioma or pneumoconiosis.
