Survivor of a stingray injury to the heart.

Injuries to the extremities from stingray barbs are not uncommon along the Australian seaboard. Cardiac injuries from stingray barbs are rare, even worldwide, and all but one have been fatal. We report a survivor of a cardiac injury caused by a stingray barb. Penetration of a body cavity by a stingray barb requires early surgical referral and management.

Accuracy of Emergency Medicine Residents Using Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) to Detect Retained Stingray Barbs.

BACKGROUND: Stingray envenomation is a common presenting complaint for coastal emergency departments in the United States. Currently, radiograph is the gold standard to evaluate for a retained stingray barb, but ultrasound may be a useful tool to detect retained barbs. OBJECTIVE: To determine if emergency medicine residents could use ultrasound to identify stingray barbs embedded in animal tissue models. A secondary objective was to determine if resident experience affected their ability to detect stingray barbs. METHODS: Thirty-two emergency medicine residents participated in the study. Aft

Description of a new species of rhinebothriidean tapeworm from the skate Dipturus batis in the Mediterranean Sea.

Examination of rajid skates off the Algerian coast in the Mediterranean Sea revealed that three of the 33 Dipturus batis Linnaeus, 1758 examined harboured a new tapeworm species: Echeneibothrium algeriensis n. sp. This new species, collected from the anterior half of the spiral valves, is described on the basis of morphological data from light and scanning electron microscopy. The new species differs from previously described Echeneibothrium species by details of the scolex and loculi, total length, the length of the myzorhynchus, the number of proglottides, and the number of testes. Compariso

Surface ultrastructure and the mitochondrial gene rrnl of Parachristianella indonesiensis Palm, 2004 (Trypanorhyncha: Eutetrarhynchidae) with the amended generic diagnosis.

The microthrix pattern of adult Parachristianella indonesiensis Palm, 2004 is described for the first time based on the standardized terminology for microtriches, and the generic diagnosis of Parachristianella Dollfus, 1946, regarding microtriches, is also amended. The surface ultrastructure of P. indonesiensis consists of three kinds of microtriches so that the proximal and distal bothrial surfaces are covered respectively with acicular to short capilliform filitriches and aristate gladiate spinitriches interspersed with capilliform filitriches. The remainder of the scolex bears capilliform f

Structural feature and self-assembly properties of type II collagens from the cartilages of skate and sturgeon.

Acid-soluble collagen (ASC) and pepsin-soluble collagen (PSC) were extracted and purified from the cartilages of skate and sturgeon. Their typical structure and physicochemical properties were evaluated by circular dichroism (CD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and so on. Results showed that the extracted collagen was likely identified as collagen-II composed of three α-chains (135 kDa), with the typical peptide sequence of Gly-X-Y. It showed the collagen retained the native and intact triple helical structure, and its intensity ratio of the positive and negative absorption peaks (Rpn) was 0.19-0.25

Coronal arteries were injected with lead carbonate suspension and with Indian ink and cleared preparations 150--300 mkm thick were made in 195 hearts of fish, amphibians and reptiles and studied roentgenographically. It was stated that in Chondrichthyes (shark, skate) and in Chondrostei (beluga, stellate sturgeon, sturgeon), as well as in alligator both compact and spongy myocardium of the cardiac ventricle possess blood vessels. In teleostei, amphibians and reptiles (except alligator) spongy myocardium is avascular and receives its nutrition from the ventricle. In view of the data on the pres

Methods for identifying and interpreting sex-linked SNP markers and carrying out sex assignment: application to thornback ray (Raja clavata).

Sex-determining modes remain unknown in numerous species, notably in fishes, in which a variety of modalities have been reported. Additionally, noninvasive individual sexing is problematic for species without external sex attributes or for early life stages, requiring cytogenetic or molecular analyses when sex chromosomes or sex-linked markers have been characterized. Genomics now provide a means to achieve this. Here, we review common sex-determination systems and corresponding statistical methods for identifying sex-linked genetic markers and their use for sex assignment, focusing on single

Mercury accumulation, speciation, and temporal trends in Atlantic Stingrays (Hypanus sabinus).

Mercury (Hg) deposited into aquatic sediments can be converted into the more toxic methylmercury (MeHg) by microbial activity. Atlantic stingrays (Hypanus sabinus) are an estuarine and nearshore species found in coastal regions of the western North Atlantic, occurring in multiple habitat types, and feeding mainly on benthic invertebrates. Mercury dynamics and speciation in stingrays have not been well examined. This study quantified total Hg and Hg species (Hg (II) and MeHg) in Atlantic stingrays sampled from Florida's Indian River Lagoon (IRL) from 2012 to 2013. Tissues (muscle and liver) col

Morphology does not predict performance: jaw curvature and prey crushing in durophagous stingrays.

All stingrays in the family Myliobatidae are durophagous, consuming bivalves and gastropods, as well as decapod crustaceans. Durophagous rays have rigid jaws, flat teeth that interlock to form pavement-like tooth plates, and large muscles that generate bite forces capable of fracturing stiff biological composites (e.g. mollusk shell). The relative proportion of different prey types in the diet of durophagous rays varies between genera, with some stingray species specializing on particular mollusk taxa, while others are generalists. The tooth plate module provides a curved occlusal surface on w

Hematology and blood pH reference intervals for wild Spiny Butterfly Rays (Gymnura altavela) in the Canary Islands.

BACKGROUND: Despite the popularity of elasmobranchs in zoos and aquariums, data on hematological values for health monitoring remain limited, particularly for wild populations. In this study, reference intervals for key hematological parameters and blood pH were established from blood samples of 49 adult females of the Critically Endangered Spiny Butterfly Ray (Gymnura altavela) collected across three shallow beaches in the Canary Islands. Additional data were obtained from four adults maintained under human care. To our knowledge, this is the first report of hematological and blood pH referen

The skin microbiome of cow-nose rays (Rhinoptera bonasus) in an aquarium touch-tank exhibit.

Public aquaria offer numerous educational opportunities for visitors while touch-tank exhibits offer guests the ability to directly interact with marine life via physical contact. Despite the popularity of touch-tanks, there is a paucity of research about animal health in these exhibits and, in particular, there is little research on the microbial communities in these highly interactive exhibits. Microbial community structure can have implications for both host health and habitat function. To better understand the microbiome of a touch-tank we used high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA ge

The central vessel of the renal countercurrent bundles of two marine elasmobranchs--dogfish (Scyliorhinus caniculus) and skate (Raja erinacea)--as revealed by light and electron microscopy with computer-assisted reconstruction.

The renal countercurrent bundles of elasmobranch fish were studied by light and electron microscopy. The kidneys of the lesser spotted dogfish, Scyliorhinus caniculus Blainville, and the little skate, Raja erinacea Mitchill, were investigated. Three-dimensional reconstruction with computer assistance revealed the spatial association of the renal tubular segments and their relationships to each other, as well as to the microvasculature. Regular association between structures was assessed by quantification of contact points on histological sections. The bundles contain a hairpin loop of neck seg

Two new species of Stillabothrium (Cestoda: Rhinebothriidea) from stingrays of the genus Fontitrygon from Senegal.

Morphological and molecular analyses of cestode specimens collected during survey work of batoid elasmobranchs and their parasites in Senegal revealed two new species of the rhinebothriidean cestode genus Stillabothrium Healy et Reyda 2016. Stillabothrium allisonae Dedrick et Reyda sp. n. and Stillabothrium charlotteae Iwanyckyj, Dedrick et Reyda sp. n. are both described from Fontitrygon margaritella (Compagno et Roberts) and Fontitrygon margarita (Günther). Both new cestode species overlap in geographic distribution, host use and proglottid morphology, but are distinguished from each other,

Stingray injury to the webspace of the foot.

Stingrays are cartilaginous fish that are related to sharks. They are one of the largest groups of venomous marine animals. Stingrays account for 750 to 2000 injuries annually. They are generally passive, reclusive creatures that only sting in self-defense. Most injuries caused by these animals are nonfatal. A stingray possesses between 1 and 4 venomous stings, which are located along the caudal spine. If a stingray injury is sustained, parts of the spine may be left in the lacerations, which prolongs exposure to venom and increases the risk of subsequent wound infection. Stingray venom is uni

Multiple thyrotropin β-subunit and thyrotropin receptor-related genes arose during vertebrate evolution.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is composed of a specific β subunit and an α subunit that is shared with the two pituitary gonadotropins. The three β subunits derive from a common ancestral gene through two genome duplications (1R and 2R) that took place before the radiation of vertebrates. Analysis of genomic data from phylogenetically relevant species allowed us to identify an additional Tshβ subunit-related gene that was generated through 2R. This gene, named Tshβ2, present in cartilaginous fish, little skate and elephant shark, and in early lobe-finned fish, coelacanth and lungfish, was

Revealing trophic transmission pathways of marine tapeworms.

Parasites are important components of natural systems, and among their various roles, parasites strongly influence the flow of energy between and within food webs. Over 1000 tapeworm species are known to parasitise elasmobranchs, although full life cycles are resolved for fewer than 10 of them. The lack in resolution stems from the inability to distinguish larval from adult stages using morphology alone. Molecular elucidation of trophic transmission pathways is the next step in understanding the role of hosts and parasites within food webs. We investigated the parasite assemblage of New Zealan

Three unrelated species, 3 sites, same host--monogenean parasites of the southern fiddler ray, Trygonorrhina fasciata, in South Australia: egg hatching strategies and larval behaviour.

The southern fiddler ray, Trygonorrhina fasciata (Rhinobatidae), is parasitized by 3 monogenean (platyhelminth) species from 3 families on 3 different sites of the host: Calicotyle australis (Monocotylidae) from the cloaca, Pseudoleptobothrium aptychotremae (Microbothriidae) from the skin and Branchotenthes octohamatus (Hexabothriidae) from the gills. Cues that promote egg hatching were investigated for each species and the behaviour of their larvae was also documented. Eggs were laid by parasites in vivo and maintained at 22 degrees C.
