Hematology of East Pacific green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Southern Gulf of California, Mexico: reference intervals of healthy turtles and intra-population comparisons.

East Pacific green turtles (Chelonia mydas) inhabit tropical and subtropical waters along the western coast of the Americas. This population uses the Gulf of California, Mexico, as a primary area for feeding and refuge, where they face various stressors. This study aimed to establish hematological reference intervals for healthy green turtles in this area (n = 326), as well as evaluate seasonal variations in blood parameters and compare values between healthy turtles and individuals affected by fibropapillomatosis (n = 25). Reference intervals for hematological analytes were estimated followin

The new Health-Related Quality of Life in Dog Chronic Kidney Disease Questionnaire demonstrates reliability and validity for use in canine clinical trials.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate an owner-reported questionnaire designed to measure health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD). METHODS: This noninterventional study followed best practice guidance for instrument development. Draft items were initially identified through a qualitative literature and social media review. Concept elicitation and cognitive debriefing interviews with owners of dogs with CKD further informed item development and modification. Psychometric properties were then evaluated in a larger sample, alongside 2 global items assessing

Dietary phosphorus and renal disease in cats: where are we?

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Phosphorus is an essential nutrient required for the normal function of every cell in the body and a deficiency in dietary phosphorus may lead to adverse effects. Conversely, high dietary phosphorus may cause kidney damage in otherwise healthy adult cats, particularly when provided in highly bioavailable forms and when the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is low. For cats that have chronic kidney disease (CKD), phosphorus is the most important mineral in its pathogenesis and morbidity. As the disease progresses, elevated phosphorus may increase the risk of complications such as

Retrospective evaluation of surgical treatment of linear and discrete gastrointestinal foreign bodies in cats: 2009-2021.

OBJECTIVES: Gastrointestinal foreign bodies (FBs) are an important cause of emergency surgical intervention in cats, but little information exists in the literature evaluating the risks and outcomes in this species. The study purpose was to describe cases of feline FBs and compare perioperative factors and outcomes between linear foreign body (LFB) and discrete foreign body (DFB) surgery in cats. METHODS: The medical records from the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital were searched for cats that had undergone surgery for FB removal between August 2009 and August 2021. Perioper

Genotypic Diversity and Antifungal Susceptibility of Clinical Isolates of Cryptococcus Gattii Species Complex from Argentina.

The aim of this study was to determine the genotypic diversity of 22 Cryptococcus gattii species complex clinical isolates from Argentina and to place these genotypes within the diversity of clinical, veterinary and environmental isolates from Latin America. Mating type and antifungal susceptibility of the isolates were also determined. By URA5-RFLP, nine isolates were identified as molecular type VGI, 10 as VGII, one as VGIII and two as VGIV. Multilocus sequence typing (MSLT), following the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM) consensus MLST scheme, was used to determin

POINT-OF-CARE AND STANDARD LABORATORY REFERENCE INTERVALS FOR COAGULATION VALUES IN ASIAN ELEPHANTS (ELEPHAS MAXIMUS): VARIATION BY AGE CLASS, SEX, AND TIME TO CENTRIFUGATION.

In Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus causes significant calf mortality. Coagulation testing may aid veterinarians in early identification and management of hemostatic disorders. This study sought to establish reference intervals for select coagulation and platelet values. Blood was collected from clinically healthy Asian elephants (n = 63) in juvenile (≤15 yr old, n = 9), adult (>15 to ≤50 yr old, n = 41), and geriatric (>50 yr old, n = 13) age classes at seven institutions in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand. Activated clotting time (ACT) was immediately

Eliminating rabies in Tanzania? Local understandings and responses to mass dog vaccination in Kilombero and Ulanga districts.

BACKGROUND: With increased global attention to neglected diseases, there has been a resurgence of interest in eliminating rabies from developing countries through mass dog vaccination. Tanzania recently embarked on an ambitious programme to repeatedly vaccinate dogs in 28 districts. To understand community perceptions and responses to this programme, we conducted an anthropological study exploring the relationships between dogs, society, geography and project implementation in the districts of Kilombero and Ulanga, Southern Tanzania. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Over three months in 2012,

The name to remember: Flexibility and contextuality of preliterate folk plant categorization from the 1830s, in Pernau, Livonia, historical region on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Research on the folk categorization of nature in preliterate societies in Europe is complicated due to the fragmentation of the information available and is rarely undertaken. Yet the data is valuable and may provide, in certain circumstances, important insights, if not into novel medicines, then into the historical logic of selection and memorisation of plants useful from a medicinal perspective. AIMS OF THE STUDY: We aim to understand the ethnobotany of a preliterate society by analysing the emic (derived from people) perspective on nature-related culture of

Ultrasonographic Measurement of Kidney-to-Aorta Parameters in French Bulldogs.

Ultrasonographic kidney size assessment requires normalization to body size; the kidney length-to-aorta diameter (KL/AoD) ratio improves diagnostic accuracy, yet reference ranges vary across breeds. This study aimed to establish KL/AoD reference values in French Bulldogs and assess the effects of sex, age, body weight, kidney side, and aortic scanning plane. Fifty healthy French Bulldogs were examined. KLs were measured in the sagittal plane, and aortic diameters were recorded just caudal to the left renal artery in longitudinal (AoDL) and transverse (AoDT) planes. Each measurement was taken t

Life-Stage-Specific Hematological Profiles in Yellow Mealworm Beetles (Tenebrio molitor): Reference Intervals and Hemocyte Characterization.

BACKGROUND: The edible insect industry, driven by the nutritional and environmental benefits of mealworms, faces increasing challenges from pathogens affecting Tenebrio molitor farming systems. Hemocyte-based health assessments could provide valuable diagnostic insights, yet standardized hemolymph processing protocols and hematological reference intervals (RIs) are currently lacking for this species. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop practical protocols for hemolymph sampling, refine hemocyte classification, and establish hematological RIs for both larval and adult stages of T. molitor.

Barriers to innovation in human rabies prophylaxis and treatment: A causal analysis of insights from key opinion leaders and literature.

Rabies is an essentially 100% fatal, zoonotic disease, caused by Lyssaviruses. Currently, the disease is vaccine-preventable with pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP and PEP). Still, rabies virus is estimated to cause up to 60,000 human deaths annually, of which the vast majority occurs in rural Asia and Africa, due to the inaccessibility of prophylaxis and non-existence of treatment. Despite these unmet clinical needs, rabies control mainly focuses on the sylvatic reservoir and drug innovation receives relatively little attention compared to other neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). As s
