Low-Cd tomato cultivars (Solanum lycopersicum L.) screened in non-saline soils also accumulated low Cd, Zn, and Cu in heavy metal-polluted saline soils.

Many reclaimed tidal flat soils feature high salinity and heavy metal (HM) accumulation. Consumption of vegetables cultivated in this type of cropland may cause health risks. Low-Cd tomato cultivars (Solanum lycopersicum L.) were identified in non-saline soil in our previous studies (Tan et al. 2014). However, further research should determine whether these low-Cd cultivars will maintain in the repeatability and stability in saline soil and whether they have low accumulation abilities for accompanying metals (such as Zn and Cu). A soil-pot trial was implemented to measure Cd, Zn, and Cu concen

The vector effect of microplastics and nanoplastics: co-transport and ecological risks of chemical pollutants and antibiotic resistance genes in the soil-water continuum.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) act as dynamic environmental vectors across the soil-water continuum, allowing them to enter organisms through direct ingestion, leading to potential tissue accumulation. Under specific exposure conditions, these vectors can undergo trophic transfer through food chains, contributing to combined toxicological risks. This paper reviews how the adsorption and co-transport behaviors of chemical pollutants by MPs and NPs are collectively regulated by the intrinsic physicochemical properties of the material and environmental weathering processes. The format

Niche-driven microbial assembly across the soil-root continuum of Casuarina equisetifolia under a heavy metal pollution gradient.

Heavy metal pollution (HMP) threatens soil ecosystems and plant health. This study integrated 16S rRNA sequencing, network analysis, environmental mapping, and bacterial isolation to investigate how distinct ecological niches of Casuarina equisetifolia modulate microbial communities under metal stress. Results revealed a spatial pollution gradient, with Pb²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Cd²⁺ decreasing with distance from the mine, while As⁵⁺, Cr³ ⁺, and Ni²⁺ remained near background levels but displayed significant niche-dependent enrichment, especially for Cr³ ⁺, and Ni²⁺ in rhizosphere soil under medium and h

Co-metabolic biodegradation of acetamiprid by Pseudoxanthomonas sp. AAP-7 isolated from a long-term acetamiprid-polluted soil.

An AAP-degrading bacterium, AAP-7, was isolated from AAP-polluted soil. AAP-7 was identified as Pseudoxanthomonas sp. on the basis of the comparative analysis of 16S rDNA sequences. The strain was able to transformate more than 80% AAP by means of co-metabolism and degraded AAP via hydrolysis or demethylation to form (E)-3-(((6-chloropyridin-3yl)methyl)(methyl)amino)acrylonitrile and N-((6-chloropyridin-3yl)methyl)-N-methylprop-1-en-2-amine, both of which transformed into ultimate product, which was 1-(6-chloropyridin-3yl)-N-methylmethanamine. A novel degradation pathway was proposed based on

Underappreciated Soil NOx Emissions Amplify Background O3 Pollution During Compound Dry-Hot Extremes in North China.

Increasingly frequent compound dry-hot extremes (CDHEs) are influencing atmospheric chemistry through land-atmosphere feedback. Here we show that summertime surface ozone (O3) concentrations across natural background regions of North China (>35°N) unexpectedly exceed those in urban areas, accompanied by an increasing trend in tropospheric NO2 vertical column densities (VCDs). This compelling spatial anomaly confirms that natural nitrogen oxides (NOx) sources, particularly soil NOx emissions (SNOx), may play a pivotal role in driving O3 formation. To test this hypothesis, numerical experiments

[Plant Growth-promoting Bacteria Alleviate the Toxic Effects of Soil Microplastics and Heavy Metal Complex Pollution in Hybrid pennisetum].

The coexistence of microplastics and heavy metals in soil can lead to more intricate environmental effects. While plant growth-promoting bacteria have been widely recognized for enhancing the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils, little research has been conducted to investigate whether they can alleviate the stress of microplastic-heavy metal composite contamination on plants. We investigated the effects of isolated and screened plant growth-promoting bacteria on the growth and cadmium (Cd) accumulation of Hybrid pennisetum under the composite pollution of Cd and polypropylene (PP) w

Application of dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria for the remediation of soil and water polluted with chlorinated organic compounds: Progress, mechanisms, and directions.

Chlorinated organic compounds are widely used as solvents, but they are pollutants that can have adverse effects on the environment and human health. Dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) such as Shewanella and Geobacter have been applied to treat a wide range of halogenated organic compounds due to their specific biological properties. Until now, there has been no systematic review on the mechanisms of direct or indirect degradation of halogenated organic compounds by DIRB. This work summarizes the discussion of DIRB's ability to enhance the dechlorination of reaction systems through di

Could soil microplastic pollution exacerbate climate change? A meta-analysis of greenhouse gas emissions and global warming potential.

Microplastics pollution and climate change are primarily investigated in isolation, despite their joint threat to the environment. Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are emitted during: the production of plastic and rubber, the use and degradation of plastic, and after contamination of environment. This is the first meta-analysis to assess underlying causal relationships and the influence of likely mediators. We included 60 peer-reviewed empirical studies; estimating GHGs emissions effect size and global warming potential (GWP), according to key microplastics properties and soil conditions. We investigat

Can heavy metal pollution induce bacterial resistance to heavy metals and antibiotics in soils from an ancient land-mine?

Microbial resistance to antibiotics is a growing challenge to human health. Recent evidence has indicated that antibiotic resistance can be co-selected for by exposure to heavy metals in agricultural soils. It remains unknown if this is a concern in other environments contaminated by metals. We here investigated soil microbial activities, composition and tolerance to heavy metals and antibiotics in a mining soil survey. We found that microbial respiration, growth, and biomass were affected by available metal concentrations. Most of the variation in microbial PLFA composition was explained by d

Occurrence and distribution of trace levels of antibiotics in surface waters and soils driven by non-point source pollution and anthropogenic pressure.

Antibiotics in surface waters and soils are growing public health concerns and treated wastewater has often been identified as the main source of antibiotics. However, few studies have been conducted to evaluate the occurrence and concentrations of antibiotics in coastal cities without direct impact of wastewater discharge. In this study, the occurrence of 14 antibiotics including four macrolides, three sulfonamides, three β-lactams, lincomycin, chloramphenicol, furazolidon, and monensin in surface waters and soils in Singapore were analyzed with SPE-LC-ESI-MS/MS.
