Testing the dual-pathway model for auditory processing in human cortex.

Analogous to the visual system, auditory information has been proposed to be processed in two largely segregated streams: an anteroventral ("what") pathway mainly subserving sound identification and a posterodorsal ("where") stream mainly subserving sound localization. Despite the popularity of this assumption, the degree of separation of spatial and non-spatial auditory information processing in cortex is still under discussion. In the present study, a statistical approach was implemented to investigate potential behavioral dissociations for spatial and non-spatial auditory processing in stro

Inducing letter-by-letter dyslexia in normal readers.

Letter-by-letter (LBL) dyslexia is an acquired reading disorder characterized by very slow reading and a large linear word length effect. This suggests the use of a sequential LBL strategy, in sharp contrast with the parallel letter processing used by normal subjects. Recently, we have proposed that the reading difficulty of LBL dyslexics is due to a deficit in discriminating visually similar letters based on parallel letter processing [Arguin, M., Fiset, S., & Bub, D. Sequential and parallel letter processing in letter-by-letter dyslexia. Cognitive Neuropsychology, 19, 535-555, 2002]. The vis

The right temporo-parietal junction contributes to visual feature binding.

We investigated the neural basis of conjoined processing of color and spatial frequency with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A multivariate classification algorithm was trained to differentiate between either isolated color or spatial frequency differences, or between conjoint differences in both feature dimensions. All displays were presented in a singleton search task, avoiding confounds between conjunctive feature processing and search difficulty that arose in previous studies contrasting single feature and conjunction search tasks. Based on patient studies, we expected the ri

The role of domain-general attention and domain-specific processing in working memory in algebraic performance: An experimental approach.

We investigated the role of working memory in symbolic and spatial algebra and related tasks across five experiments. Each experiment combined a processing task (expression evaluation, arithmetic, coordinate plane, geometry, or mental rotation) with verbal and spatial memory loads in a dual-task design. Spatial memory was compromised in the presence of more difficult processing tasks, and verbal memory was only compromised in the presence of algebraic tasks. The latter was related to the demands of retaining quantities associated with variables in verbal memory. We suggest that both verbal and

Uncovering foveal crowding?

Visual crowding, as context modulation, reduce the ability to recognize objects in clutter, sets a fundamental limit on visual perception and object recognition. It's considered that crowding does not exist in the fovea and extensive efforts explored crowding in the periphery revealed various models that consider several aspects of spatial processing. Studies showed that spatial and temporal crowding are correlated, suggesting a tradeoff between spatial and temporal processing of crowding. We hypothesized that limiting stimulus availability should decrease object recognition in clutter. Here w

Do mothers' play behaviors moderate the associations between socioeconomic status and 24-month neurocognitive outcomes of toddlers born preterm or with low birth weight?

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether neonatal risks and maternal scaffolding (i.e., task changes and flexibility) during a 16-month post-term play interaction moderated the association between socioeconomic status (SES), visual-spatial processing and emerging working memory assessed at 24 months post-term among 75 toddlers born preterm or low birth weight. METHOD: SES and neonatal risk data were collected at hospital discharge and mother-child play interactions were observed at 16-month post-term. General cognitive abilities, verbal/nonverbal working memory and visual-spatial processing data were c

Interaction between visual working memory and upright postural control in young adults: an event-related potential study based on the n-back paradigm.

As a part of the overall information-processing system of the brain, postural control is related to the cognitive processes of working memory. Previous studies have suggested that cognitive tasks and postural control processes can compete for resources in common brain areas, although there is an "inverted U" relationship between arousal level and behavioral control - the arousal level of individuals changes when performing cognitive tasks. However, the exact neural connections between the two are unclear. This may be related to the nature of cognitive tasks. Some studies believe that posture o

Spatial contrast sensitivity in facial recognition.

Recognition and learning of complex images may depend on spatial processing characteristics of the visual system. Prosopagnosia, an impairment of visual learning and recognition of faces, might result from impaired perception in spatial channels carrying crucial information. We studied spatial contrast sensitivity (SCS) in two subjects with stable facial recognition defects. One had relative SCS reduction for high-frequency gratings but could process high frequencies in room light. The other had normal SCS. Both had intact spatial processing relative to image size. The results suggest that imp

Odon: an ultra-fast viewer for spatial proteomics.

MOTIVATION: Multiplexed spatial proteomics and spatial transcriptomics generate large, high-dimensional imaging datasets that are challenging to visualize efficiently, particularly at whole-slide and cohort scale. Visualization is an essential step for rapid detection of staining artefacts, such as protein aggregates or non-specific staining. RESULTS: Here, we present Odon, a native Rust desktop viewer designed for rapid, interactive exploration of multiplex imaging data on a standard laptop. Odon is primarily built around the OME-Zarr imaging format, and supports annotations via GeoJSON and

Face perception in women with Turner syndrome and its underlying factors.

Turner syndrome (TS) is a chromosomal condition that affects development in females. It is characterized by short stature, ovarian failure and other congenital malformations, due to a partial or complete absence of the sex chromosome. Women with TS frequently suffer from various physical and hormonal dysfunctions, along with impairments in visual-spatial processing and social cognition difficulties. Previous research has also shown difficulties in face and emotion perception. In the current study we examined two questions: First, whether women with TS, that are impaired in face perception, als

The neural link between stimulus duration and spatial location in the human visual hierarchy.

Integrating spatial and temporal information is essential for our sensory experience. While psychophysical evidence suggests spatial dependencies in duration perception, few studies have directly tested the neural link between temporal and spatial processing. Using ultra-high-field functional MRI and neuronal-based modeling, we investigated how and where the processing and the representation of a visual stimulus duration is linked to that of its spatial location. Our results show a transition in duration coding: from monotonic and spatially-dependent in early visual cortex to unimodal and spat

Multisensory representations of space and time in sensory cortices.

Clear evidence demonstrated a supramodal organization of sensory cortices with multisensory processing occurring even at early stages of information encoding. Within this context, early recruitment of sensory areas is necessary for the development of fine domain-specific (i.e., spatial or temporal) skills regardless of the sensory modality involved, with auditory areas playing a crucial role in temporal processing and visual areas in spatial processing. Given the domain-specificity and the multisensory nature of sensory areas, in this study, we hypothesized that preferential domains of represe

Exploring facial emotion perception in schizophrenia using transcranial magnetic stimulation and spatial filtering.

Schizophrenia patients have difficulty extracting emotional information from facial expressions. Perception of facial emotion can be examined by systematically altering the spatial frequency of stimuli and suppressing visual processing with temporal precision using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). In the present study, we compared 25 schizophrenia patients and 27 healthy controls using a facial emotion identification task. Spatial processing was examined by presenting facial photographs that contained either high (HSF), low (LSF), or broadband/unfiltered (BSF) spatial frequencies. Temp

Global motion mechanisms compensate local motion deficits in a patient with a bilateral occipital lobe lesion.

Successive stages of cortical processing encode increasingly more complex types of information. In the visual motion system this increasing complexity, complemented by an increase in spatial summation, has proven effective in characterizing the mechanisms mediating visual perception. Here we report psychophysical results from a motion-impaired stroke patient, WB, whose pattern of deficits over time reveals a systematic shift in spatial scale for processing speed. We show that following loss in sensitivity to low-level motion direction WB's representation of speed shifts to larger spatial scale

Visual information processing of faces in body dysmorphic disorder.

CONTEXT: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a severe psychiatric condition in which individuals are preoccupied with perceived appearance defects. Clinical observation suggests that patients with BDD focus on details of their appearance at the expense of configural elements. This study examines abnormalities in visual information processing in BDD that may underlie clinical symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients with BDD have abnormal patterns of brain activation when visually processing others' faces with high, low, or normal spatial frequency information. DESIGN: Case-control st

An Open-Source Workflow for Semi-Automated Spatial Profiling of Multiplex Immunofluorescent Images.

Multiplex immunofluorescence microscopy facilitates the quantification and spatial analysis of cellular features within tissue sections, allowing greater understanding of disease progression or the effects of drug treatment or other exposures on cellular organization and tissue structure. Recent advances in image analysis and computational methods such as machine-learning-based cell segmentation and automated cell phenotyping have enhanced the depth of information gained from these historically qualitative images. However, many spatial analysis pipelines are technically challenging or require

Parallel processing of general and specific threat during early stages of perception.

Differential processing of threat can consummate as early as 100 ms post-stimulus. Moreover, early perception not only differentiates threat from non-threat stimuli but also distinguishes among discrete threat subtypes (e.g. fear, disgust and anger). Combining spatial-frequency-filtered images of fear, disgust and neutral scenes with high-density event-related potentials and intracranial source estimation, we investigated the neural underpinnings of general and specific threat processing in early stages of perception. Conveyed in low spatial frequencies, fear and disgust images evoked converge

Exploring semantic grounding in the posterior parietal cortex.

This study examines the evolving perspective on semantic processing, which has shifted from the traditional view of an isolated semantic memory system to one that recognizes the involvement of dynamic, distributed neural networks. Recent evidence supports the hypothesis that semantic processing engages both modality-specific and multimodal regions, with the latter serving as integrative "semantic hubs." In this context, our research focuses on the posterior parietal cortices (PPC) and their role in processing space-related semantics. We utilized a low-frequency repetitive Transcranial Magnetic

Three-dimensional neglect phenomena following right anterior choroidal artery infarction.

Neglect in the horizontal and vertical axes of space has been observed after acute right anterior choroidal artery (AChA) lesions. How spatial processing is affected in the radial axis during the acute period following infarction in this region is unknown. We report the case of a 69-year-old man with acute left hemineglect and deficits in 3-dimensional spatial processing following right AChA infarction. His line bisections in 4 spatial conditions, oriented in the 3 primary axes of space, were compared with 6 control participants. The patient's bisections were different from true center and fro

The relative importance of spatial versus temporal structure in the perception of biological motion: an event-related potential study.

We investigated how the spatiotemporal structure of animations of biological motion (BM) affects brain activity. We measured event-related potentials (ERPs) during the perception of BM under four conditions: normal spatial and temporal structure; scrambled spatial and normal temporal structure; normal spatial and scrambled temporal structure; and scrambled spatial and temporal structure. As in a previous study, we identified two negative components at both occipitotemporal regions: N210 reflected general motion processing while N280 reflected the processing of BM. We analyzed the averaged ERPs
