Multiple calcified aneurysms of splenic artery with hypersplenism and concomitant cholelithiasis were found in a 73-year-old Japanese woman. The symptoms and radiological findings were referable to the aneurysms. The predisposing factors are reviewed. Proximal ligation of the splenic artery and splenectomy gave a good postoperative result. Histopathological examination revealed an atherosclerotic origin, nevertheless, specimens from an elderly person may obscure the actual pathology.

Celiac artery compression syndrome(CACS)is a rare disorder characterized by postprandial intestinal angina caused by insufficient blood supply to the gastrointestinal organs. In this syndrome, the root of the celiac artery is compressed and narrowed by the median arcuate ligament of the diaphragm during expiration, sometimes causing difficulties in trans-arterial intervention. We report here a case that trans-hepatic arterial intervention was able to performed by splenic bypass. A 74- year-old man with multiple hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)was performed the angiography, and diagnosed as CACS d

The spleen is a vital intra-abdominal organ that provides a role in hematopoietic and immunologic functions. It is highly vascular and is the most commonly injured organ in the setting of blunt trauma, potentially leading to life-threatening hemoperitoneum. Splenic artery embolization (SAE) serves as an alternative to operative management of patients with splenic trauma and has quickly become popular given the infectious risks associated with splenectomy. Since its inception, indications for SAE have evolved beyond the management of traumatic injury. The authors discuss splenic artery anatomy

Myelofibrosis (MF) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm frequently complicated by splenomegaly, with vascular abnormalities, such as splenic artery aneurysm (SAA), rarely reported. We herein report a 74-year-old woman with secondary MF harboring a JAK2 V617F mutation who developed SAA requiring intervention because of its potential risk of rupture. Ruxolitinib therapy markedly reduced splenomegaly and improved constitutional symptoms, thereby optimizing hemodynamic conditions and overall status for safe spleen-preserving coil embolization. This case highlights the potential relationship between MF

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remains the leading cardiac problem affecting pregnant women, especially in low- to middle-income countries. In nearly one-third of the cases, it is detected during pregnancy when they present with complications. Infective endocarditis (IE) in pregnancy is rare, with an incidence of 1 in 100 000 pregnancies, and carries high maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Embolisation of the infective vegetation can lead to inoculation of the arterial wall, causing aneurysm, infarction or abscess formation. Being an end artery, splenic artery aneurysm and infarct can

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of proximal splenic artery embolization (SAE) in cirrhotic patients with splenomegaly who underwent surgical laparotomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 8 cirrhotic patients with splenomegaly. They underwent proximal SAE before- (n = 6) or after (n = 2) laparotomy. Vascular plugs or coils were placed in the proximal splenic artery. The diameter of the portal vein and the splenic volume were recorded. Clinical outcome assessments included platelet counts, the model for end-stage liver dise

Here, we report a case of splenic artery aneurysm rupture in a patient with known heterozygosity mutation of the ACTN2 gene (variant c.971G > A p.Arg324Gln). The patient came to our emergency department with epigastric pain radiating to the lumbar area, with an absence of peritonism signs. An abdominal computed tomography angiography showed a ruptured huge (5 cm) splenic artery aneurysm. Therefore, the patient underwent emergency endovascular coil embolization with complete aneurysm exclusion. The postoperative course was uneventful, until postoperative day five when the patient developed a sy

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic infection endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. The severe form of disease, caused by deposition of Schistosoma eggs in the portal vein, is known as hepatosplenic schistosomiasis. We present a case of a 26-year-old woman with esophageal varices in the setting of hepatosplenic schistosomiasis. This patient underwent partial splenic artery embolization to treat thrombocytopenia secondary to splenic sequestration. After embolization and improvement of cell counts, the patient was successfully able to undergo variceal band ligation.

In multiple organ procurement, taking into consideration certain peculiarities of the vascular architectonics of the celiac trunk or an iatrogenic injury to the superior mesenteric artery, it is impossible to perform standard arterial reconstruction of a pancreas transplant with the use of a Y-shaped vascular allograft. This results in refusal from transplanting a potentially suitable organ. The purpose of our study was to assess the possibility of transplantation of the pancreatoduodenal complex with isolated blood supply via the splenic artery. Between January 2008 and November 2016, transpl

Hepatic myelopathy (HM) is a devastating but rare complication of cirrhosis and portal hypertension that profoundly affects quality of life and improves only with liver transplantation. We present a case where progressive severe spastic paraparesis due to HM was substantially reversed with partial splenic artery emobilization (PSAE). (Hepatology 2018;67:1169-1171).

Variations in the origin and branching pattern of splenic artery are relatively common and asymptomatic, but the presence of an accessory splenic artery, that too symptomatic, is quite rare. This report describes a 67-year-old male, with no history of liver disease, who presented with recurrent upper gastrointestinal bleeding and was found to have an accessory splenic artery arising from the left gastric artery with submucosal intragastric course and supplying the upper pole of the spleen.

Splenic artery aneurysms (SAAs) are the third most frequent intra-abdominal aneurysm, following abdominal aorta and iliac artery aneurysms. SAAs are classified according to their involvement of arterial wall layers: true aneurysms involve all 3 layers (intima, media, and adventitia), and pseudoaneurysms involve only one or two. Herein we present a new case of giant pseudo SAA. A 65-year-old female patient with a pancreatic mass and iron deficiency was referred to our clinic for further investigation. Abdominal ultrasonography, contrast-enhanced CT and magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion

OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy is cited as the most important risk factor for splenic artery aneurysm (SAA) rupture, but the true rupture rate of SAAs during pregnancy is unknown. Our objective was to evaluate the prevalence of SAAs, based on diagnostic and procedural codes, in an urban population treated in a county hospital with the highest number of births in the United States. We hypothesized that SAA rupture in pregnant women is very low and that SAAs are more likely to be diagnosed in older patients.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with a SAA during a recent 5-year period were identified using Intern

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to report 7 cases of splenic artery aneurysm (SAA) encountered in the emergency department (ED).
METHODS: A retrospective survey of our ED database revealed 7 cases of SAA (6 men, 1 woman; mean age, 56 years) of 651,347 ED visits over the last decade. Their clinical and imaging features, management, and outcomes were evaluated.
RESULTS: Splenic artery aneurysm in the ED was rare (prevalence, 0.011%). Common presentations included acute abdomen (n = 5) and shock (n = 2). Five cases had liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Abdominal radiographs (n = 7) revealed

BACKGROUND: Splenic artery aneurysms are rare. Symptoms vary from none to acute abdominal pain. Gastrointestinal bleeding is a very rare symptom, but may occur in case of rupture.
CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old woman was admitted for haematemesis. A ruptured splenic artery aneurysm was found. The aneurysm had ruptured into the pancreatic duct, causing gastrointestinal bleeding via the papilla of Vater. The patient's aneurysm was treated successfully with endovascular embolisation.
DISCUSSION: Selective arteriography is diagnostic for splenic artery aneurysms. Endovascular treatment with embolisa
