Comparison of split double and triple twists in pair figure skating.

In this study, we compared the kinematic variables of the split triple twist with those of the split double twist to help coaches and scientists understand these landmark pair skating skills. High-speed video was taken during the pair short and free programmes at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and the 2003 International Skating Union Grand Prix Finals. Three-dimensional analyses of 14 split double twists and 15 split triple twists from eleven pairs were completed. In spite of considerable variability in the performance variables among the pairs, the main difference between the split d

Pediatric anesthesia in the nonoperating room setting.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The paper will review the few studies that have been published recently on nonoperating room pediatric anesthesia/sedation. These studies target gaps in our understanding of critical factors associated with the provision of nonoperating room anesthesia safety and reliability in children. RECENT FINDINGS: More objective data regarding the safety and reliability of this practice have become available. Video can accurately capture a child's state and allow comparison of different sedation techniques more objectively than is possible with available literature. The use of standa

On the highway measures of driver glance behavior with an example automobile navigation system.

An over-the-road study of visual-manual destination entry using an example original equipment GPS-based navigation system was accomplished in traffic on urban streets and motorways. The evaluation used typical drivers, and a vehicle instrumented to record driver eye glances and fixations, driver control inputs, and lateral lane position. The primary task was to drive in a safe manner, in traffic, while maintaining speed and lateral lane position. As a secondary task, the drivers entered successive destinations while driving, using a touch screen, and at their own pace. They were told there was

[Clinical studies of learning disability. Part I: Two-axial diagnosis of learning disability using the Pupil Rating Scale Revised (PRS) and WISC-R].

We investigated the correlation between intelligence quotient and school performance evaluated by PRS (the Pupil Rating Scale Revised) to assess an adequacy of two-axial diagnosis of learning disabilities (LD). The subjects were 37 children, including 31 cases with developmental or school problems and 6 normal children. The Japanese Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) was employed for an estimation of intelligence quotient (IQ) and, PRS was used to evaluate school performance. We defined 'LD risk child' as a child whose IQ was no less than 70 and PRS score was no more tha

[Obstructive sleep apnea and abnormal fatigue].

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is characterized by irregular snoring during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness and in some cases unwanted sleep attacks. The patient has a disturbed night sleep with numerous wakenings. Disturbed sleep at night causes daytime problems with attention, concentration and work performance. Furthermore, it may eventually result in errors and accidents. Excessive sleepiness sometimes necessitates the suspension of the patient's driving license. It is of importance to identify patients with obstructive sleep apnoea and daytime sleepiness, because the condition can

Can children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome edit their intentions?

In this paper we describe a cognitive mechanism, the Intention Editor, which is triggered whenever there are several intentions competing in parallel with each other. This mechanism is hypothesized to be a subcomponent of a larger mechanism, the Supervisory Attentional System (SAS: Shallice, 1988) which serves inhibition in general. The Intention Editor interrupts one of several simultaneously activated intentions, preventing it from executing its action, utterance, or thought. This mechanism appears to develop during the first five to six years of life. We propose that an impairment in the de

Effects of amount of helplessness training and internal-external locus of control on mood and performance.

Based on Wortman and Brehm's integration of reactance theory with Seligman's model of learned helplessness, an investigation was conducted to examine the effects of amount of helplessness training and internal--external locus of control on subsequent task performance and on self-ratings of mood. Subjects were divided into "internal" and "external" groups and were then given either high, low, or no helplessness training on a series of concept-formation problems. After completing a mood checklist, all subjects worked on an anagram task presented as a second experiment by a second experimenter. T

Perfectionism in anorexia nervosa: novel performance based evidence.

Existing research into perfectionism in Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is limited by a reliance upon self-report measures. This study used novel performance based measures to investigate whether there is behavioural evidence for elevated perfectionism in AN. 153 participants took part in the study--81 with a diagnosis of AN and 72 healthy controls (HCs). Participants completed two performance based tasks assessing perfectionism--a text replication task and a bead sorting task--along with self-report measures of perfectionism. Significant group differences were observed on both tasks. In the text replic

Revealing complex interdependencies in surgical instrument reprocessing using SEIPS 101 tools.

Sterile Processing Departments (SPDs) must clean, maintain, store, and organize surgical instruments which are then delivered to Operating Rooms (ORs) using a Courier Network, with regular coordination occurring across departmental boundaries. To represent these relationships, we utilized the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) 101 Toolkit, which helps model how health-related outcomes are affected by healthcare work systems. Through observations and interviews which built on prior work system analyses, we developed a SEIPS 101 journey map, PETT scan, and tasks matrices t

Magnetic-field exposures of cable splicers in electrical network distribution vaults.

The purposes of the research reported here were to quantify the power-frequency magnetic-field exposures of cable splicers while they were performing tasks in energized network distribution vaults and to compare these exposures with occupational exposure guideline levels. Network vaults supply electricity to commercial and residential urban areas as well as to large buildings. Participating workers wore a personal exposure monitor at the waist, kept a simple diary to record their work location, and recorded information about the vaults and tasks performed. To capture temporal variability, a st

Exploring Brain-Body Interactions in Parkinson's Disease: A Study on Dual-Task Performance.

Parkinson's disease (PD) leads to impairments in cortical structures, resulting in motor and cognitive symptoms. Given the connection between brain structure deficits and physical symptoms in PD, assessing objective brain activity and body motion could provide valuable insights for PD assessment and understanding its underlying mechanisms. This study aimed to explore the connection between brain activity and body movement metrics in a group of individuals with PD and an age-matched healthy control (HC) group. The goal was to evaluate the feasibility of using brain and body motion measures for

Higher Heart Rate Intensity Can Negatively Impact Tactical Decision-Making and Technical Accuracy in Small-Sided Games: A Study on The Effects of Field Size and Scoring Method Manipulation.

This study investigated how varying task constraints - pitch size and the presence of a goal - affect psychophysiological intensity, technical execution, and tactical decision-making in small-sided games (SSGs). The study also examined correlations between intensities and technical and tactical performance. Thirty-six regional-level male youth soccer players (aged 16.5 ± 0.5 years) participated in a four-week intervention using a non-controlled, repeated-measures design within a single cohort. Players completed 3v3 SSGs under six conditions combining three pitch sizes (75, 100, and 125 m2 per

Enhancing motor learning of young soccer players through preventing an internal focus of attention: The effect of shoes colour.

The purpose of this research was to assess how the motor learning skills in 7-years old soccer players can be improved by preventing an internal focus of attention via the use coloured shoes. We painted the classic black soccer shoes in six areas corresponding to six regions of the foot with which it is possible to interact with the ball. Thirty-four 7-years-old soccer players were randomized to two groups (Coloured n = 17 and Black, n = 17) to perform four basic football manoeuvres/tasks: reception (RECP), passing (PASS), ball management (MAGT), and shooting (SHOT). We found highly significan

Assessing the validity of situation awareness measures through visual behaviours in car driving: A comprehensive review.

Situation Awareness (SA), encompassing perception, comprehension, and projection of environment is essential for effective driving performance. Traditional SA measurements have important limitations: task interruption, subjectivity, and inability to capture SA's dynamic nature. While unaffected by these limitations, visual behaviours are not traditionally used to measure SA. This review aimed to identify the potential links between SA and visual behaviours in car driving. We identified 22 studies: 15 measured both SA and visual behaviours, and seven additional studies used visual behaviour as

Human-in-the-Loop Pareto Optimization: Trade-Off Characterization for Assist-as-Needed Training and Performance Evaluation.

During human motor skill training and physical rehabilitation, there exists an inherent trade-off between task difficulty and user performance. Characterizing this trade-off is crucial for evaluating user performance, designing assist-as-needed (AAN) protocols, and assessing the efficacy of training protocols. In this study, we propose a novel human-in-the-loop (HiL) Pareto optimization approach to characterize the trade-off between the performance and the perceived challenge level of motor learning or rehabilitation tasks. We adapt Bayesian multi-criteria optimization to systematically and ef

A visualization tool for eye tracking time series analysis supporting teachers and psychologists.

Eye Tracking (ET) can help improve understanding of visual attention in computer-supported interactive environments. In attention tasks, distinguishing between relevant target objects and distractors is crucial for effective performance, yet the underlying gaze patterns that drive successful task completion remain incompletely understood. Traditional gaze analyses provide limited insight into the temporal dynamics of attention allocation and the relationship between gaze behavior and task performance. When applied to complex visual search scenarios, current gaze analysis methods face several l
