Impact of a sugar-sweetened beverage tax on dental caries, periodontitis and edentulism in Australia: a modelling study.

INTRODUCTION: Oral diseases are a growing public health challenge affecting approximately 3.5 billion people globally. Nearly 32% of Australian adults aged 15 and above have untreated dental caries. Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are a significant contributor to oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontitis and edentulism. We aimed to estimate the potential impact of implementing a 20% tax on SSBs on the burden of oral disease in Australia. METHODS: A prior proportional multistate lifetable model of the 2019 Australian adult population was used. We added dental caries, periodontitis an

Effects of Long-Term Exposure to the Earned Income Tax Credit on Work Disability in Later Life.

This study investigates the impact of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) on work disability and Social Security Disability Insurance (DI) claims among Americans. Utilizing the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we examine the effects of EITC exposure from birth to mid-adulthood on work disability risk before retirement. Our analysis reveals that EITC exposure during adulthood significantly reduces the likelihood of work disability, potentially influencing DI trends. Specifically, a $10,000 increase in cumulative EITC exposure is associated with about a 1.25 percentage-point lower probability of

Tax and noncommunicable diseases attributable to tobacco and alcohol consumption in 5 Sub-Saharan African countries.

BACKGROUND: Increased taxation on alcohol and tobacco is among the cost-effective measures used to deal with the burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) globally. Despite adopting such efforts, the impacts of taxation on alcohol and tobacco are yet to be fully understood. OBJECTIVE: The study's objective is to find empirical evidence regarding changes in the NCD mortality rate associated with changes in the tax rates of tobacco and alcohol. METHODS: The study adopted the System Generalized Method of Moments (SGMM) to explore the relationship between levels of taxes and NCD mortality rates.

Health Effects of the 2021 Earned Income Tax Credit Expansion on Young Adults Without Children.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points In 2021, young adults without children became (temporarily) newly eligible for the earned income tax credit, the largest US poverty alleviation program. This 2021 expansion was associated with fewer poor mental health days and modest improvements in physical health. This study suggests the importance of providing economic support for young adults at this critical juncture of the life course, when they are ineligible for many other social safety net benefits. CONTEXT: In 2021, Congress expanded the earned income tax credit (EITC)-the largest US poverty alleviation pro

Long-term impact of unhealthy food tax on consumption and the drivers behind: A longitudinal study in Hungary.

Several countries have introduced public health product taxes with the objective of reducing the absolute amount of consumption of unhealthy food and tackling obesity. This study aims to estimate the long-term impact of the Hungarian public health product tax introduced in 2011. To achieve this, a unique consumer purchase dataset was analysed to examine daily fast-moving consumer goods purchases from a representative sample of 2,000 households from 2010 to 2018. The results indicate that the tax has been fully reflected in consumer prices. A decline in consumption was observed initially, consi

ATL response to arsenic/interferon therapy is triggered by SUMO/PML/RNF4-dependent Tax degradation.

The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-1) Tax transactivator initiates transformation in adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), a highly aggressive chemotherapy-resistant malignancy. The arsenic/interferon combination, which triggers degradation of the Tax oncoprotein, selectively induces apoptosis of ATL cell lines and has significant clinical activity in Tax-driven murine ATL or human patients. However, the role of Tax loss in ATL response is disputed, and the molecular mechanisms driving degradation remain elusive. Here we demonstrate that ATL-derived or HTLV-1-transformed cells ar

Complex cell cycle abnormalities caused by human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 Tax.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the causative agent of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), a malignancy of CD4(+) T cells whose etiology is thought to be associated with the viral trans-activator Tax. We have shown recently that Tax can drastically upregulate the expression of p27(Kip1) and p21(CIP1/WAF1) through protein stabilization and mRNA trans-activation and stabilization, respectively. The Tax-induced surge in p21(CIP1/WAF1) and p27(Kip1) begins in S phase and results in cellular senescence. Importantly, HeLa and SupT1 T cells infected by HTLV-1 also arrest in senescence

Immune activation induces immortalization of HTLV-1 LTR-Tax transgenic CD4+ T cells.

Infection with the human T-cell leukemia virus-1 (HTLV-1) results in a variety of diseases including adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL). Although the pathogenesis of these disorders is poorly understood, it involves complex interactions with the host immune system. Activation of infected T cells may play an important role in disease pathogenesis through induction of the oncogenic HTLV-1 Tax transactivator protein. To test this hypothesis, we employed transgenic mice in which Tax is regulated by the HTLV-1 LTR. T-cell receptor stimulation of LTR-Tax CD4(+) T cells induced Tax expression, hype

The retroviral oncoprotein Tax targets the coiled-coil centrosomal protein TAX1BP2 to induce centrosome overduplication.

Emerging evidence suggests that supernumerary centrosomes drive genome instability and oncogenesis. Human T-cell leukaemia virus type I (HTLV-I) is etiologically associated with adult T-cell leukaemia (ATL). ATL cells are aneuploid, but the causes of aneuploidy are incompletely understood. Here, we show that centrosome amplification is frequent in HTLV-I-transformed cells and that this phenotype is caused by the viral Tax oncoprotein. We also show that the fraction of Tax protein that localizes to centrosomes interacts with TAX1BP2, a novel centrosomal protein composed almost entirely of coile

Impact of HTLV-I Tax on cell cycle progression and the cellular DNA damage repair response.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is the etiologic agent of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), a rapidly progressing, clonal malignancy of CD4+ T lymphocytes. Fewer than one in 20 infected individuals typically develop ATL and the onset of this cancer occurs after decades of relatively symptom-free infection. Leukemic cells from ATL patients display extensive and varied forms of chromosomal abnormalities and this genomic instability is thought to be a major contributor to the development of ATL. HTLV-I encodes a regulatory protein, Tax, which is necessary and sufficient to transform ce

Regulation of the GATA3 promoter by human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I Tax protein.

The Human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) non-structural protein Tax plays a crucial role in cellular transformation. It activates the transcription factors of various cellular genes and interacts with cellular proteins. There is limited data available on the interaction between specific T-cell transcription factor GATA3 and Tax. Implications for the significance of GATA3 in T-cell development and function, T helper2 (Th2) differentiation, and a role of GATA3 during the immune response have been reported. To determine the effect of the Tax protein on GATA3 gene expression, we investigate

Inhibition of caspase cascade by HTLV-I tax through induction of NF-kappaB nuclear translocation.

NF-kappaB is required for prevention of apoptosis. We examined the importance of human T-cell leukemia virus-I (HTLV-I) Tax protein to stimulate NF-kappaB nuclear translocation, thus preventing apoptosis. Jurkat cells and JPX-9 cells in which the inducible Tax expression plasmid vector was stably transfected were used in the present study. Both Jurkat and Tax(-) JPX-9 cells had small amounts of basal nuclear NF-kappaB activity. The addition of NF-kappaB inhibitors suppressed NF-kappaB nuclear translocation of the cells, thus inducing apoptosis. Sequential activation of caspases from caspase-8

Relationship between anti-Tax antibody responses and cocultivatable virus in HTLV-I-infected rabbits.

The presence of anti-Tax antibody responses in human T cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I)-infected individuals has been correlated with increased proviral load, increased risk of transmitting infection, and increased risk of developing tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM). In this study, a rabbit model of HTLV-I infection was used to determine whether anti-Tax antibody responses could predict the presence of virus with the potential to replicate. Seven of 14 HTLV-I-infected rabbits developed anti-Tax antibody responses. The onset of Tax reactivity was variable,

Special report on taxation. Prepare for impending legislation that could threaten your tax-exempt status!

With impending federal action, and the likelihood of "copycat" legislation at the state and local levels if a federal statue is adopted, nonprofit hospitals need to ensure that they will be in compliance if a mandatory charity care bill were to become law. Such facilities should take the initiative now, by clearly articulating their charity care policies and by describing their other undercompensated or uncompensated activities that are maintained in order to benefit their communities. They should also ensure that all of their activities that could be counted as charity care or community benef
