Application of digital infrared thermography for carpal tunnel syndrome evaluation.

We investigated the thermographic findings of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We enrolled 304 hands with electrodiagnostically identified CTS and 88 control hands. CTS hands were assigned to duration groups (D1, < 3 months; D2, 3‒6 months; D3, 6‒12 months; D4, ≥ 12 months) and severity groups (S1, very mild; S2, mild; S3, moderate; S4, severe). The temperature difference between the median and ulnar nerve territories (ΔM-U territories) decreased as CTS duration and severity increased. Significant differences in ΔM-U territories between the D1 and D3, D1 and D4, D2 and D4, and S1 and S4 groups (P

Ocular Surface Disease Index and Ocular Thermography in Keratoconus Patients.

PURPOSE: Keratoconus (KC) has been defined as a "noninflammatory" corneal disease, but recent studies have noted a potential inflammatory origin. We analysed the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and ocular surface temperature (OST) in KC patients compared to controls. Patients and Methods. A total of 179 eyes in 90 patients with KC (topographic keratoconus classification 0-1 to 4, age 36.1 ± 12.5 years, 65.9% males) and 82 eyes in 41 controls (age 36.4 ± 12.8 years, 47.6% males) were examined. The participants completed the OSDI questionnaire and underwent corneal topography, tomography, an

Energetic costs of mange in wolves estimated from infrared thermography.

Parasites, by definition, extract energy from their hosts and thus affect trophic and food web dynamics even when the parasite may have limited effects on host population size. We studied the energetic costs of mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) in wolves (Canis lupus) using thermal cameras to estimate heat losses associated with compromised insulation during the winter. We combined the field data of known, naturally infected wolves with a data set on captive wolves with shaved patches of fur as a positive control to simulate mange-induced hair loss. We predict that during the winter in Montana, more s

Infrared thermography fails to visualize stimulation-induced meridian-like structures.

BACKGROUND: According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the vital energy flows through a system of channels also called meridians. Generally accepted proof for meridians cannot be considered as being given. Goal of this study was to examine whether possible stimulation-induced meridian-like structures, as recently described by other authors, can be visualized and objectified simultaneously at different infrared wavelength ranges. METHODS: The study analyses evidence for the existence of acupuncture-specific, meridian-like artifacts in 6 healthy volunteers (mean age +/- SD 28.7 +/- 3.7 yea

Contact thermography in idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia and other facial pains.

Contact thermography is a useful tool in the differential diagnosis of facial pain and can be used to differentiate idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia from atypical facial pain and anaesthesia dolorosa. The increase in sympathetic activity found in idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia has not previously been reported. The basis for this finding is discussed.

Accuracy of Infrared Thermography in Diagnosing Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema.

Background/Objectives: Infrared thermography (IRT) is an imaging technique used in clinical practice to detect changes in skin temperature caused by several dysfunctions, including breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). Thus, the present study aimed to assess the reproducibility and accuracy of IRT in diagnosing BCRL. Methods: This cross-sectional study included participants who underwent a unilateral mastectomy and used indirect volumetry for lymphedema detection. IRT analysis was recorded in four positions, analyzing maximum, mean, and minimum temperatures, as well as the temperature diffe

Infrared thermography as valuable tool for gynoid lipodystrophy (cellulite) diagnosis.

Cellulite is a morphological alteration of the tegument tissue, directly interfering in self-esteem with etiology and pathophysiology far from being a consensus. Although the visual diagnosis of cellulitis is well known, it does not represent the real pathological condition of the subcutaneous tissue. The aim of the study was to investigate the hypothesis that the more heterogeneous tissue pattern analyzed by infrared thermography, the more severe is the cellulite grade. Forty female participants were selected and 60 thighs were analyzed by clinical anamnesis and infrared thermography. Classic

Medical infrared thermography as hidradenitis suppurativa diagnostic tool: literature review.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a rare, chronic, inflammatory skin disease that has a strong impact on the quality of life. Medical infrared thermography (MIT) is a non-invasive imaging method that could be used for evaluation of skin inflammation, which is an important biomarker in HS. We performed a comprehensive review of the literature to verify the possibilities of using MIT for HS. Key words "hidradenitis suppurativa", "acne inversa" and "thermography" were used for PubMed, Embase and Scopus literature analysis and in total four articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The inflamed ar

Use of infrared thermography to noninvasively assess neonatal piglet temperature.

Hypothermia is risk factor for piglet neonatal mortality, especially for low birth weight piglets. Piglets with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) also have a higher mortality risk at birth. This study aimed to validate infrared thermography (IRT) as an alternative to rectal temperature (RT) to measure piglet temperature in the hour postpartum, and to identify piglets with thermoregulation difficulties. At birth (6.3 ± 0.35 min postpartum), 67 piglets were dried, weighed, scored for growth retardation (IUGR; 0-3), and isolated in a plastic box where IRT images were taken, followed by RT. P

Dynamic nasal infrared thermography in patients with nasal septal perforations.

BACKGROUND: Nasal obstruction is a typical symptom in patients with nasal septal perforations. Rhinomanometry and acoustic rhinometry are not reliable in these cases because the perforations generate incorrect results. Infrared thermography camera (ITC) systems allow contact-free intranasal recordings of the nasal surface temperature and the semiquantification of nasal airflow. The aim of this study was to perform contact-free temperature measurements of the nasal vestibular surface by application of ITC systems in patients with septal perforations to investigate the disturbed intranasal heat

Effect of shod status on distal limb thermography in leisure horses.

This study evaluated whether shod status affects distal limb surface temperature in 43 healthy leisure horses using infrared thermography. Thermographic images of 16 regions of interest were acquired at rest from shod (n=23) and barefoot horses (n=20), with temperatures corrected for ambient temperature and wind speed. Significant thermal differences existed between anatomical regions (P<0.001), with frogs coolest (28.6±1.6°C) and tarsi/coronal bands warmest (29.7±1.5°C). Shod vs barefoot status showed no overall temperature effect (P=0.29), except cooler right hind frogs in barefoot horses (2

Infrared thermography in cats with squamous cell carcinoma: A pilot study.

This prospective pilot study aimed to investigate the influence of SCC on skin temperature distribution in cats. Thermographic images were obtained from the nasal planum and pinna of cats with SCC (n = 26) and a healthy control group (n = 9). In the nasal planum, the median temperature in cats with SCC was 31.20 °C while in controls it was 23.50 °C, showing a significant difference (p < 0.001). The ROC curve demonstrated high discriminatory accuracy between groups for temperatures above 24.8 °C (p < 0.001). In the pinna, the median temperature in cats with SCC was 33.85 °C and in controls 28.5

Dataset of breast thermography images for the detection of benign and malignant masses.

Thermographic image analysis is a subfield of diagnostic image processing aimed at detecting breast abnormalities in women at an early stage. It is a developing field of research and its effectiveness and scope require scientific assessment to be determined. An open-access dataset has been created for the scientific community to test and develop techniques for computational detection of normal and abnormal breast conditions from thermograms. This dataset is a valuable resource for researchers due to the scarcity of publicly available datasets of breast thermographic images. It includes thermog

Thermography as a tool to assess training effects in military working dogs.

Military working dogs are exposed to high levels of physical load during their work, although this is not always evident from their behaviour. This workload causes various physiological changes, including variation in the temperature of the affected body parts. In this preliminary study, we investigated whether thermal changes following the daily work routine of military dogs are detectable by infrared thermography (IRT). The experiment was carried out on eight male German and Belgian shepherd patrol guard dogs performing two training activities, obedience and defence. The surface temperature

Infrared thermography as a tool for the measurement of negative emotions in dairy cows.

In commercial dairy cows, the conditions in which they are kept may lead to negative emotional states associated with the development of chronic physiological and behavioural abnormalities that may compromise their health, welfare and productivity. Such states include fear, stress or anxiety. Behavioural rather than physiological tests are more likely to be used to indicate these states but can be limited by their subjectivity, need for specialised infrastructure and training (of the operator and sometimes the animal) and the time-consuming nature of data collection. Popularly used physiologic

Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy with Infrared Thermography for Accurate Prediction of Cellulitis.

Cellulitis is frequently misdiagnosed owing to its clinical mimickers, collectively known as pseudocellulitis. This study investigated diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) alone and in combination with infrared thermography (IRT) for the differentiation of cellulitis from pseudocellulitis. A prospective cohort study at an urban academic hospital was conducted from March 2017 to March 2018. Patients presenting to the emergency department with presumed cellulitis were screened for eligibility, and 30 adult patients were enrolled. Dermatology consultation conferred a final diagnosis of cellulit

Characterization of Baseline Temperature Characteristics Using Thermography in The Clinical Setting.

BACKGROUND: Thermography is a diagnostic method based on the ability to record infrared radiation emitted by the skin and is unique in its ability to accurately show physiological and/or pathological cutaneous temperature changes in a non-invasive way. This method can be used to indirectly assess changes or impairments in cutaneous perfusion. Significant technological advancements have allowed thermography to be more commonly utilized by clinicians, yet a basic consensus of patient characteristics that may affect temperature recordings is not established. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated c
