Types of neuronal responses in the rat thalamus to peripheral temperature changes.

Recordings were made of spike-trains from 163 neurons of the rostral part of the ventrobasal thalamus complex of the rat while the temperature of the scrotal skin was altered. The following results were obtained: 55 neurons were non-thermosensitive, 7 neurons cold-sensitive and 101 neurons warm-sensitive. In the case of the warm-sensitive cells a definite discrimination was possible: 61.4% of the neurons altered their firing behavior during peripheral cooling, changing from relatively even spike frequency to burst firing. This change could be induced repeatedly by altering the temperature. 38.

The contribution of cutaneous thermal signals to bodily self-awareness.

Thermosensory signals may contribute to the sense of body ownership, but their role remains highly debated. We test this assumption within the framework of pathological body ownership, hypothesising that skin temperature and thermoception differ between right-hemisphere stroke patients with and without Disturbed Sensation of Ownership (DSO) for the contralesional plegic upper limb. Patients with DSO exhibit lower basal hand temperatures bilaterally and impaired perception of cold and warm stimuli. Lesion mapping reveals associations in the right Rolandic Operculum and Insula, with these region

Evoking natural thermal perceptions using a thin-film thermoelectric device with high cooling power density and speed.

Multimodal sensory feedback from upper-limb prostheses can increase their function and usability. Here we show that intuitive thermal perceptions during cold-object grasping with a prosthesis can be restored in a phantom hand through targeted nerve stimulation via a wearable thin-film thermoelectric device with high cooling power density and speed. We found that specific regions of the residual limb, when thermally stimulated, elicited thermal sensations in the phantom hand that remained stable beyond 48 weeks. We also found stimulation sites that selectively elicited sensations of temperature

Topical application of isolated menthol and combined menthol-capsaicin creams: Exercise tolerance, thermal perception, pain, attentional focus and thermoregulation in the heat.

We determined the effects of topically applied (i) isolated menthol cream, (ii) menthol and capsaicin co-application or (iii) placebo cream on exercise tolerance, thermal perception, pain, attentional focus and thermoregulation during exercise in the heat. Ten participants cycled at 70% maximal power output until exhaustion in 35°C and 20% relative humidity after application of (i) 5% isolated menthol, (ii) 5% menthol and 0.025% capsaicin co-application or (iii) placebo cream. Thermo-physiological responses were measured during exercise, with attentional focus and pain determined post-exercise

Low-intensity exercise delays the shivering response to core cooling.

Hypothermia can occur during aquatic exercise despite production of significant amounts of heat by the active muscles. Because the characteristics of human thermoregulatory responses to cold during exercise have not been fully elucidated, we investigated the effect of low-intensity exercise on the shivering response to core cooling in cool water. Eight healthy young men (24 ± 3 yr) were cooled through cool water immersion while resting (rest trial) and during loadless pedaling on a water cycle ergometer (exercise trial). Before the cooling, body temperature was elevated by hot water immersion

Corneal Sensitivity and Dry Eye Symptoms in Patients with Keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To investigate corneal sensitivity to selective mechanical, chemical, and thermal stimulation and to evaluate their relation to dry eye symptoms in patients with keratoconus. METHODS: Corneal sensitivity to mechanical, chemical, and thermal thresholds were determined using a gas esthesiometer in 19 patients with keratoconus (KC group) and in 20 age-matched healthy subjects (control group). Tear film dynamics was assessed by Schirmer I test and by the non-invasive tear film breakup time (NI-BUT). All eyes were examined with a rotating Scheimpflug camera to assess keratoconus severity.

Thermoregulatory dysfunction in neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Hyperthermia is the central feature of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), but its etiology remains elusive. Two competing hypotheses implicate either hypothalamic dysfunction (inappropriate "set point") or direct myotoxicity (excessive peripheral heat production). These two models have distinct implications for thermoregulatory activity in NMS. The first predicts that the individual should respond as to a hypothermic threat or infection (the hypothalamus signals the body to raise its temperature). The second implies that an excessive heat load is perceived by the hypothalamus, which respond

Pain sensitivity in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Pain threshold was measured with short heat stimuli using a contact thermode in 19 patients with anorexia nervosa, 20 patients with bulimia nervosa, and 21 control subjects. Both patient groups had significantly elevated pain thresholds compared with the control subjects. In the total sample, no substantial covariation could be demonstrated among pain threshold and clinical, physiological, metabolic, or psychological data. However, in separate regression analyses pain threshold correlated significantly (negatively) with local skin temperature in the anorectic patients and almost significantly

[Digital flap autografts for pulp coverage in distal amputations of the fingers. 68 flaps].

Sixty-one patients underwent 68 digital pulp amputations involving the distal phalanx (Zone 2 and 3). 46 unipedicular Vankataswami-Subramanian island flaps (VS flap) and 22 bipedicular Moberg-O'Brien flaps (MOB flap) were performed. All distal thumb amputations were treated by MOB flap, whereas all lateral finger distal amputations of the long digits were treated by VS flap. Both flaps were used for the other types of amputation. Four digits developed complications and needed a delayed regularisation. The mean follow-up for the 46 flaps was two years. Pulp reconstruction was satisfactory in al

Recovery of sensation in replanted digits--time of recovery and degree of two-point discrimination.

Even if good motor function returns in a replanted digit, if no useful sensation returns, the digit cannot be considered fully functional. In such cases sensory reconstruction with nerve grafts may be necessary, but it is difficult to determine the optimal time for such surgery. Therefore, we studied 37 replanted digits in which the palmar digital nerves had been severed bilaterally and anastomosed at the replantation procedure. Our findings indicate a correlation between the time at which sensation returned to the digits and the degree of two-point discrimination (2PD) that returned. In digit

Keeping cool - how persons with MS manage heat sensitivity: Insights from the Swiss multiple sclerosis registry.

INTRODUCTION: Temperature sensitivity affects many persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). Heat sensitivity describes a temporary symptom worsening in response to heat exposure. Cooling methods may counteract this and improve quality of life, but their real-world awareness and usage are poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of temperature sensitivity among pwMS and examine awareness and usage of cooling methods. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis included 760 participants from the Swiss MS Registry. Data from a survey on temperature sensitivity and cooling methods were an

Effects of fan cooling with an air-perfused rucksack on physiological and perceptual strains in young men while running in uncompensable hot environment.

BACKGROUND: Cooling devices reduce thermal strain during pre-, between-, and postexercise. However, their efficacy during moderate/intensity runs in hot conditions with airflow equivalent to the running speed remains unclear. This study assessed physiological and perceptual responses to neck and upper back fan-cooling through an air-perfused rucksack under such conditions. METHODS: Ten young men ran at 60% V̇O<inf>2peak</inf> for 30 min in 35 °C, 50% relative humidity with (FAN) and without (CON) air-perfused rucksacks with a hood in a randomized order. Headwind equal to running speed was pro

Effects of two external cooling strategies on physiological and perceptual responses of athletes with tetraplegia during and after exercise in the heat.

Athletes with tetraplegia may experience marked hyperthermia while exercising under environmental heat stress due to their limited ability to dissipate heat through evaporative means. This study investigated the effectiveness of two external cooling strategies (i.e., spraying water onto the body surface or using a cooling vest) on physiological and perceptual variables in tetraplegic athletes during and after an aerobic exercise session in a hot environment. Nine male wheelchair rugby players performed an incremental test to determine their maximum aerobic power output. After that, they were s

Thermal hypesthesia in patients with complex regional pain syndrome related dystonia.

The quantitative thermal test showed cold and warmth hypesthesia without increased heat pain sensitivity in the affected limbs of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) patients with tonic dystonia (n = 44) in comparison with healthy controls with a similar age and sex distribution (n = 35). The degrees of cold and warmth hypesthesia were strongly correlated. We conclude that dysfunction in small nerve fiber (i.e., C and Aδ) processing is present in patients with CRPS-related dystonia.

Scratching and noxious heat stimuli inhibit itch in humans: a psychophysical study.

BACKGROUND: Patients who suffer from chronic itch employ creative techniques to alleviate their itch, often using painful thermal stimuli, such as hot and very cold showers, as well as mechanical stimuli, such as scratching. OBJECTIVES: The present study examined whether the sensory perception of itch is attenuated by remote interactions between both thermal and mechanical stimuli and afferent information related to itch. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Itch was induced with histamine iontophoresis in 21 healthy young subjects. Repetitive thermal stimuli including innocuous warmth, innocuous cool, nox

Differences in anal sensation in continent and incontinent patients with perineal descent.

Neuropathic damage secondary to pelvic floor descent is considered to be an important aetiological factor in idiopathic faecal incontinence. Perineal descent however does not necessarily result in a loss of motor function or incontinence. To elucidate the role of anal sensation in the continence mechanism we measured mucosal electrosensitivity and thermal sensitivity in normal controls and in both continent and incontinent patients with perineal descent. A catheter carrying two platinum electrodes was used to assess mucosal electrosensitivity and a water perfused thermode 1 cm long to measure

Long-term griseofulvin treatment for progressive systemic sclerosis.

Thirty-three patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) (24 women and 9 men, 27 with diffuse scleroderma and 6 with CREST syndrome) were treated with griseofulvin alone (375-500 mg/day) for 12-84 months (mean 33). Clinical and functional assessment of the results included: a self-evaluation (general status, skin toughness, cold sensitivity, dysphagia), a physical examination (fingerprint areas, chest expansion, mouth widening, grip strength) routine laboratory tests, electrocardiogram, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), esophagus and chest X-rays. After griseofulvin, a significant impro
