Six congenital hypoplastic anemia (CHA) patients from five families who have been followed from 2 months to 28 years are presented. Mild hypoplastic anemia in a 13-year-old girl was associated with clinodactyly of the fifth finger on both hands, shortness in the proximal phalanges on all fingers, and syndactyly between the second and third toes and short fourth toe on the right foot. These abnormalities, except for clinodactyly, have not been reported previously in CHA. In one of the five families genetic transmission was thought to be autosomal-dominant since both the father and the son had t

BACKGROUND: Digital deformities represent a common presenting abnormality and target for surgical intervention in podiatric medicine and surgery. The objective of this investigation was to compare the radiographic width of the heads of the lesser digit proximal phalanges.
METHODS: One hundred fifty consecutive feet with a diagnosis of digital deformity and performance of weightbearing radiographs were analyzed. The maximum width of the heads of the lesser digit proximal phalanges were recorded from the radiographs using computerized digital software.
RESULTS: The mean ± standard deviation of

The first metatarsal-phalangeal joint plays a key role for athletes of various disciplines. When an athlete presents for evaluation of pain at this joint, there are several causes that should be considered. The purpose of this article is to review common injuries including turf toe, sand toe, extensor and flexor hallucis longus tendinopathy, sesamoiditis, and metatarsalgia and provide current evidence-based recommendations for diagnosis, management, and return to play considerations. Conditions not specific to athletes like gout and hallux rigidus also are discussed. Mechanism of injury, physi

BACKGROUND: Long-term observation of patients with complaints involving the distal phalanx of the hallux (disturbances of nail plate growth, periungual fold changes, and abnormal alignment of the distal phalanx relative to the proximal phalanx) has drawn attention to recurrent bony changes on its lateral aspects. These observations provided part of the rationale for earlier anatomical studies, which confirmed the presence of the collateral ligaments of the distal phalanges of the foot macroscopically and histologically. Such bony changes have previously been classified as exostoses, osteophyte

The term symbrachydactyly has been used for the phenotype of two or three short fingers or toes, hypoplasia of the middle and distal phalanges and variable syndactyly of the affected digits. Some clinicians have extended this diagnosis to include other phenotypes, specifically cleft hand, terminal transverse limb defects, hypoplasia of the thumb and fifth finger with nubbins for fingers 2, 3, and 4 and the hand deformity of the Poland anomaly. A malformations surveillance program can identify enough affected infants to characterize a phenotype. In the Active Malformations Surveillance Program

BACKGROUND: The normal radiographic anatomy of the foot and ankle, aside from my previous work, has been addressed only superficially or sparingly in the medical literature. This project correlates the detailed radiographic anatomy of the entire adult foot and ankle (two-dimensional) to osteology (three-dimensional).
METHODS: Each bone's position was determined after meticulous examination and correlation to an articulated skeleton relative to the image receptor and direction of the x-ray beam, with correlation to the radiograph for confirmation.
RESULTS: Images of each foot and distal leg b

Hirschsprung's disease usually occurs as an isolated malformation as a result of multifactorial causation. A family in which four males (two brothers and two maternal uncles) had Hirschsprung's disease and absence or hypoplasia of the nails and distal phalanges of the great toe and thumb (type D brachydactyly) is described. Hand abnormalities were not present in any other family members, and the obligate heterozygous females were without gastrointestinal problems. The pattern of inheritance was consistent with X-linked recessive inheritance; however, autosomal dominant inheritance with incompl

An infant with skeletal deformities and hypocalcemic convulsions is described. The convulsions, which were first noted in the 5th week of life, as well as the low serum calcium level were transient. The skeletal deformities consited of deformation of the terminal phalanges of the right third finger and right second toe, syndactyly of the third and fourth finger of both hands and left pes equinovarus. X-ray examination revealed abnormal shape and structure of some bones of the hands. The most likely diagnosis is transient congenital idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, which has not yet been describe

A 32-year-old short statured woman with alopecia, typical facies, shortened angulated fingers and toes with Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome type I (TRPS I) is reported. The absence of exostosis and mental retardation rule out TRPS II. The absence of generalized shortness of all phalanges, metacarpals and metatarsals distinguish it from TRPS III. Possibly the various types of Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome are genetically identical but have a varied clinical spectrum.

A mother and her son are described with neonatal trigonocephaly, multiple suture synostosis; shallow orbits; unusual nose; deviation of the terminal phalanges of fingers 1, 2, and 5; and broad toes which radiologically may show duplication of the terminal phalanx. Untreated, the condition leads to a disfiguring oxycephaly with hypotelorism. This appears to be the first documented instance of autosomal dominant trigonocephaly. The importance of the minor anomalies in its recognition and its good prognosis are emphasized.

BACKGROUND: Feingold syndrome is a combination of hand and foot anomalies, microcephaly, tracheo-esophageal fistula, esophageal/duodenal atresia, short palpebral fissures and developmental delay. The most frequent physical findings are clinodactyly of the second and fifth fingers with absent or hypoplastic middle phalanges, and syndactyly of the toes. Inheritance is autosomal dominant (MIM number 164280) with full penetrance concerning hand anomalies, variable expressivity and great intrafamilial variability.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of an African boy with duodenal atresia, microcephal

Acrocapitofemoral dysplasia (ACFD) is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia characterized by short stature with short limb dwarfism, brachydactyly, and a narrow thorax. Major radiographic features are egg-shaped capital femoral epiphyses with a short femoral neck and cone-shaped epiphyses, mainly in the hands and hips. To date, only four child patients from two families have been reported. We describe two adult patients with ACFD with a novel homozygous c.478C>T (p.Arg160Cys) mutation in IHH in the third family of the literature. The reported cases showed a middle phalanges which fused

Previously we have described a novel and distinct form of non-syndromic osseous syndactyly segregating in an autosomal recessive pattern in a consanguineous Pakistani family. The limb findings include mesoaxial reduction of the fingers, synostoses of the third and fourth metacarpals with associated single phalanges, fifth finger clinodactyly, and preaxial webbing of toes. We identified another published report of this phenotype in a large, inbred Turkish family. In the present study we mapped the phenotype in the Pakistani and Turkish families to chromosome 17p13.3 (multipoint LOD score 5.1).

Brachydactyly is classified into 5 main types. In type A brachydactylies the shortening is mainly confined to the middle phalanges of the digits and toes. Brachydactyly type A4 is characterised by brachymesophalangy II and V. We found this rare type of brachydactyly in a child and his mother. We examined the hands and feet of these individuals radiologically. The reported malformation had affected members of 2 respectively 3 generations. There is no doubt about the autosomal dominant mode of inheritance.

The aim of this study was to develop a detailed and accessible set of reference images of the normal radiographic anatomy of the digits of the ostrich (Struthio camelus), with emphasis on the metatarsophalangeal joint and its arthrography. The distal excised pelvic limbs of 10 normal ostriches of different ages (ranging from 10 to 365 days of age) obtained from an abattoir were radiographed, and 2 arthrograms were performed. To illustrate the normal radiographic anatomy of the tarsometatarsal bone, 39 images were selected, labelled, and presented along with detailed descriptions and correspond

A male, 10 month old llama with malformation of both front limbs was presented. Both front limbs had one more digit located medially. The distal phalanx of this additional digit at the left front limb reached the ground by the tip of the keratinzed pad and the toenail. The accessory digit at the right front limb was bent in a 90 degree angle caudolateraly. Beside the digital bones of the accessory digits the second metacarpal bone and the first carpal bone could be detected in both front limbs by radiological examination. Secondary a bilateral slight carpal valgus deformity could be seen.

BACKGROUND: The second toe flap is a widely used innervated neurovascular flap for repairing finger pulp defects. It mainly carries the proper plantar digital artery and nerve. But the donor site morbidity and arterial injury are common. The report retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes of the second toe free medial flap based on dorsal digital artery of the toe to investigate the esthetics and function in the treatment of soft tissue defects of fingertip pulp.
METHODS: From March 2019 to December 2020, 12 patients with finger pulp defects (seven acute crush, three cut, and two burn)
