Microcomputed Tomography Mineral Density Profile as Reference Standard for Early Carious Lesion Activity Assessment.

Early caries diagnosis is crucial to treatment decisions in dentistry and requires identification of lesion activity: whether a carious lesion is active (progressively demineralizing) or arrested (progressively remineralizing). This study aimed to identify microtomographic (micro-CT) differences between active and arrested smooth surface enamel lesions, to quantify those micro-CT differences by creating thresholds for ex vivo caries activity assessment to serve as a future reference standard, and to validate those thresholds against the remaining sample. Extracted human permanent teeth (n = 59

Functional Coating Effects of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) on Artificial Caries Lesions: A Microhardness-Based Evaluation.

Background: Dental caries is a prevalent dental problem affecting primary and permanent teeth. Early demineralization of enamel lesions can be reversed through remineralization. Many studies have focused on caries prevention and disease progression arrest using silver diamine fluoride (SDF). No in vitro studies have compared the remineralization effects of different 38% SDF solutions on artificially demineralized enamel lesions. This study aimed to compare the remineralization potential of three commercial 38% silver diamine fluoride formulations on artificial enamel lesions in primary teeth u

Composition and cariogenic potential of dental plaque fluid.

Our understanding of the chemical events that take place at the tooth-plaque interface has improved greatly through studies of the chemical composition and properties of dental plaque fluid. In the absence of fermentable carbohydrate, plaque fluid has been found to be supersaturated with respect to tooth mineral and other calcium phosphate phases, thus exhibiting the potential to support calculus formation and the remineralization of incipient carious lesions. Following the exposure to fermentable carbohydrate, the degree of saturation of plaque fluid decreases rapidly, primarily due to lactic

Investigating the efficacy of a varnish containing gallic acid on remineralization of enamel lesions: an in vitro study.

This study evaluated the efficacy of a formulated remineralizing gallic acid (GA) varnish in treating artificial enamel caries lesions. Fifty-five intact bovine incisors were collected. Enamel blocks (5 × 9 mm) were prepared. A third of each block's surface remained intact. Primary carious lesions were induced on the middle and bottom thirds of the blocks by immersing the samples in a demineralization solution for 6 h. The bottom third of the blocks were further remineralized by randomly applying 0.5%, 2%, or 8% GA varnishes and 2.26% fluoride varnish (V varnish, Vericom, Seoul, Korea), or the

Effect of a two-solution fluoride mouthrinse on remineralization of enamel lesions in vitro.

A previous study showed that a two-solution fluoride (F) rinse deposited significantly more loosely-bound F on the tooth surface than did a sodium fluoride (NaF) rinse with the same F concentration (12 mmol/L). In the present study, this experimental rinse was evaluated for its ability to cause remineralization of enamel lesions in an in vitro pH-cycling model. Caries-like lesions were formed in the enamel of extracted human molars by means of a pH 4 demineralizing solution. Fifty-one approximately 120-microns-thick sections containing lesions were randomly divided into (1) control, (2) NaF ri

Reinforced dentin remineralization via a novel dual-affinity peptide.

OBJECTIVES: In light of the constantly flowing saliva, anti-caries remineralization agents are inclined to be taken away. Owing to their limited residence time, the remineralization effect is not as desirable as expected. Hence, our study aimed to synthesize a novel peptide (DGP) with high affinity to both collagen fibrils and hydroxyapatite, and investigated its dentin remineralization efficacy in vitro and anti-caries capability in vivo. METHODS: DGP was synthesized through Fmoc solid-phase reaction. The binding ability and interaction mechanism of DGP to demineralized dentin were investiga

Remineralization agents - new and effective or just marketing hype?

This is a review of the need for better remineralization and of the status of calcium-based remineralizing agents for use in anti-caries toothpastes. Use of fluoride toothpastes has markedly reduced caries. However, the decline may be over or in reverse. There is a limit to what fluoride alone can do; complementary agents are needed. Using plaque as a reservoir for calcium-based agents holds promise. Plaque fluid is already supersaturated with respect to relevant calcium phosphates at neutral pH; extra calcium may lead to surface-blocking and sub-optimal lesion consolidation. However, at cario

Comparative effects of fluoride-containing and remineralization-promoting agents on artificial gastric juice-induced bovine enamel erosion susceptibility: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a major risk factor for erosive tooth wear because repeated exposure of enamel to gastric acid promotes demineralization. This in vitro study evaluated the protective effects of fluoride-containing and remineralization-promoting agents on enamel erosion induced by simulated gastric acid challenge. METHODS: Eighty-four bovine enamel specimens were randomly assigned to seven groups (n = 12/group): a sound enamel control group, an erosion control group treated with distilled water, and five treatment groups receiving Natural-F gel (2.09% NaF,

Promising potential effects of resveratrol on oral and dental health maintenance: a comprehensive review.

Resveratrol (RV-3, 5, 4'-trihydroxystilbene) is a natural compound found in plants like red grapes, berries, and peanuts, with promising effects on dental health. It helps strengthen tooth enamel by promoting remineralization, making the teeth more resistant to decay caused by acid-producing bacteria. RV also shields dentin, a vulnerable layer beneath the enamel, from erosion and sensitivity. Its anti-inflammatory properties can reduce inflammation associated with dental conditions such as pulpitis and endodontic diseases. Moreover, RV's antimicrobial activity inhibits the growth of bacteria i

[Risk management and clinical strategies for early enamel demineralization in orthodontic patients].

Early enamel demineralization, one of the common side effects of orthodontic treatment, occurs when dental plaque accumulation disrupts the balances of demineralization-remineralization and the oral microbial ecology. Clinically, the existence of orthodontic appliances can make oral hygiene more challenging. At the same time, patient adherence to oral hygiene appointments may be inconsistent. The combination of these factors often leads to inadequate plaque control and increases the risk of enamel demineralization. Presently, there is a lack of standardized guidelines for the clinical interven
