Tungiasis is a cutaneous parasitosis caused by an embedded female sand flea. The distribution of cases can be spatially heterogeneous even in areas with similar risk profiles. This study assesses household and remotely sensed environmental factors that contribute to the geographic distribution of tungiasis cases in a rural area along the Southern Kenyan Coast. Data on household tungiasis case status, demographic and socioeconomic information, and geographic locations were recorded during regular survey activities of the Health and Demographic Surveillance System, mainly during 2011. Data were

Tungiasis is a cutaneous parasitic infestation by the fertilized female sand flea Tunga penetrans. It is prevalent in tropical Africa and in Central and South America. Despite increasing air travel to and from these countries, surprisingly the disease is rarely reported in the United States. This report describes another case of tungiasis and reviews the 14 previously reported cases in the United States. Clinical features, differential diagnosis, treatment, and prophylaxis of tungiasis are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Tungiasis is an infestation caused by the penetration in the skin of the gravid female of the flea Tunga penetrans (T. penetrans). The current epidemiological situation of tungiasis in Eastern Africa is poorly known. We present the results of a cross-sectional study on tungiasis which was carried out in Qameyu (Northern Tanzania).
METHODOLOGY: Sixty-two schoolchildren with suspected cases of tungiasis were examined. Location, number, morphology and symptoms associated with T. penetrans infestation were recorded for each patient.
RESULTS: A total of 62 schoolchildren (38 males a

BACKGROUND: A paramount factor in the control of neglected tropical diseases from both medical and social aspects is education. New strategies must be constantly pursued to test and provide educational information related to diseases affecting vulnerable populations. We applied the Q method as a model to measure educational neglect based on the burden of disseminated tungiasis.
METHODS: Using a saturation method for sample size calculation, we recruited students and healthcare professionals to evaluate and classify 27 statements related to the prevention, control and treatment of tungiasis. A

Considering the fact that new, safe and incorporable treatment alternatives to therapeutic prophylaxis for tungiasis are lacking and sometimes proving difficult, this present study evaluated the potentials of integrating control approach involving focal premise treatment using 5% emulsifiable concentrate of cypermethrin, and topical application of Piper guineense oil with personal protection. Of the 90 houses selected, their floors were classified into paved rooms & unpaved verandas, paved verandas & unpaved rooms, paved rooms & verandas, and unpaved rooms & verandas, and tested for the presen

Tungiasis, caused by the impregnated female sand flea Tunga penetrans, is increasingly common in returned travellers from endemic areas. Clinical suspicion is raised by the clinicodermoscopic correlation, leading to rapid treatment which involves extraction of the intact flea. Ex vivo dermoscopy demonstrates the parasite's head and distended abdomen full of eggs, confirming the diagnosis.

Tungiasis is a neglected parasitic skin disease caused by penetration of female sand fleas into the epidermis. The ectoparasitosis is widespread in resource-poor communities in South America, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. To identify risk factors for the presence of sand fleas and severe infestation in an endemic community, we examined the entire population of a traditional fishing village for the presence of embedded sand fleas and determined the number and type of lesions. Demographic, behavioural and environmental characteristics of the population were assessed using a structured qu

Tungiasis is an important but highly neglected cause of morbidity in resource-poor communities in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa. Data upon which implementation of control measures can be based are scarce. Before piloting an integrated tungiasis control program in three parishes of Napak district, Uganda, a cross-sectional survey involving the systematic examination of humans and domestic mammals was implemented to establish the occurrence patterns of tungiasis. The study population was 5482 residents, of which 4035 (73.6%) participated in the study. The prevalence of tungiasis in humans

Tunga spp. are fleas commonly found in impoverished tropical regions. In Vila Juerana, a tourist community in Ilheus, Bahia, Brazil, where tungiasis is endemic, dogs are the main host of fleas during their life cycle. However, there is no information about the role of cats and chickens in tungiasis in the village. Of the 272 households investigated, 112 had domestic animals, 48 had only dogs, 28 had only cats, and nine had only chickens. Of the 27 households with cohabitation among species, 16 had cats and dogs, eight had chickens and dogs, and three had dogs, cats, and chickens. The injuries

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of skin disease in low and middle income countries is high and communicable skin diseases are a significant public health problem. Tungiasis is an ectoparasite infestation caused by the flea Tunga penetrans, which has a widespread geographical distribution. Tungiasis causes painful skin lesions and may affect activities of daily living.
OBJECTIVE: We wished to determine the prevalence and impact of tungiasis and scabies in schoolchildren in southern Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in which students were examined by dermatologists and the sk

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is common in resource-poor populations throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa, but epidemiologic data from Africa on this ectoparasitosis are scarce.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a representative sample of a rural community in Lagos State, 54 km west of Lagos (Nigeria). In the dry season, 142 households of the community were randomly selected and visited. Family members were examined for the presence of tungiasis. The localization, number, and stage of penetrated fleas, as well as the associated morbidity, were documented.

Tungiasis is a highly prevalent yet neglected disease of populations affected by extreme poverty. It causes great discomfort and pain, leads to social stigmatization and, when left untreated, can cause serious complications. Although natural repellents have been shown to be effective, too little is being done in terms of systematic prevention and treatment. In addition, self-treatment (usually extraction of fleas with non-sterile sharp instruments) comports high risks of infection, notably with viral hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus. In this article, we report seven severe cases of t

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans. Female fleas burrow into the skin, typically of the feet, producing inflammation, pain, and itching. Although poverty is a major risk factor, not all households or children in the lowest economic bracket are affected, and boys appear disproportionately infected. This study investigated environmental and behavioral characteristics of households and children to explain these variations.
METHODS: A total of 3,871 pupils (equal numbers of boys and girls) aged 8-14 years from 44 primary schools in K

INTRODUCTION: Tungiasis is a highly neglected tropical disease of the skin caused by an embedded female sand flea affecting the most resource-poor communities in sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and South America. The global disease burden is unknown and systematic, fine-resolution spatial data on prevalence and environmental and ecological risk factors are rare.
METHODS: We leveraged the Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System of 90 257 households and asked whether they had a case of tungiasis in the household at interview during three survey rounds of routine surveys, undertaken

The female flea Tunga penetrans is responsible for a cutaneous parasitosis known as Tungiasis. We report the clinical case of a 12 year-old Caucasian boy who sought treatment in a dermatological private office due to a painful lesion in the plantar area and whose dermoscopic examination, without skin contact, allowed the visualization of parasite's movement inside the skin. The diagnosis of tungiasis is clinical, but it can be aided by in vivo and ex vivo dermoscopic examination of the lesion.

Tungiasis (sand flea disease) is an ectoparasitic skin disease caused by the female sand flea/jigger flea (Tunga penetrans). As poverty is the major driving force of the disease, it can be called as a poverty-associated plague. It is one of the emerging neglected diseases in Latin America, Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, and India. The aim of the present scrutiny was to assess the public health impact of tungiasis, associated risk factors, and emerging opportunities to prevent and control tungiasis. Tungiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) that can cause significant suffering and disability. Health promotion is an important pillar in NTD control programs, assuming that better knowledge contributes to reduced risk behavior and reduced risk of infection. The study objective was to assess tungiasis-related knowledge and its translation into control practices in a rural and highly endemic setting in Karamoja, Northeastern Uganda. We applied a mixed-methods design on household and community level. A semi-quantitative questionnaire on knowledge, practices, and attitudes (KAP) regarding t

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis, a neglected tropical parasitosis, disproportionately affects children. Few empirical studies have reported neurocognitive and mental health outcomes of children with ectoparasitic skin diseases like tungiasis. Pathophysiology of tungiasis suggests it could detrimentally affect cognition and behaviour. This study pioneered the investigation of neurocognitive and mental health outcomes in children with tungiasis.
METHODS: This was a multi-site cross-sectional study including 454 quasi-randomly sampled school-children aged 8-14 from 48 randomly selected schools in two coun

Tungiasis is caused by the flea tunga penetrans and results in painful skin lesions, skin infections, and permanent disability. However, limited information is available that shows the magnitude of the problem and its risk factors that help for intervention in Ethiopia. The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of tungiasis in children aged 5 to 14 in Mettu woreda in 2020. A community based cross sectional study was conducted among randomly selected kebeles of Mettu woreda, in Southwest Ethiopia. To select study participants, multistage sampling was used. The data
