Parental alcohol supply in early childhood and adolescent drinking: Evidence from a prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Parental alcohol supply in early childhood may increase the risk of alcohol use in late adolescence. This study examined its longitudinal impact and the distinct roles of mothers' and fathers' drinking. METHODS: We studied 1,891 mother-child pairs from the Czech European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood. Mothers reported parental alcohol supply at ages 3, 5, 7, and 11 years, while adolescent alcohol use was reported by mothers, pediatricians, and youth at ages 18 and 19 years. Structural equation modeling assessed the longitudinal link between early alcohol supply (th

Do Parental Practices in Childhood Moderate the Association Between Parental Drinking and Adolescent Drinking Trajectories? A 15-Year Nationally Representative Longitudinal Study.

OBJECTIVE: We examined parenting practices and attitudes of parental warmth, harsh parenting, consistency of discipline, and parent self-efficacy in childhood as moderators of the associations between parental drinking in childhood and alcohol use from ages 12 to 19. We also explored whether these moderation effects would differ for boys and girls. METHOD: Data were drawn from the first eight waves of the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC). LSAC participants were ages 4/5 in wave one (N = 4983, Mage = 4.17, SD = 0.38, 51% boys) and 18/19 in wave eight (Mage = 18.42, SD = 0.50).

Alcohol use among Croatian adolescents: the alignment of 13-year-old and 15-year-old girls with boys, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

AIM: To determine age and gender patterns of alcohol use among Croatian pupils and assess whether alcohol use was associated with factors related to school, peers, family, and the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Data were collected from the 2022 Health Behavior in School-aged Children cross-sectional study conducted in Croatia involving 5338 pupils. Pearson χ2 test and multivariate logistic regression were performed. RESULTS: At the age of 11, boys were drinking alcohol more than girls (P<0.001), while 13- and 15-year-old girls aligned with boys. Lifetime alcohol use was positively associated wi

Alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana expectancies as predictors of substance use initiation in adolescence: A longitudinal examination.

Outcome expectancies have been found to be predictive of substance use. While development of expectancies may be dynamic during adolescence, it is unknown whether the rate of change (slope) in substance use expectancies is a risk factor for use onset across multiple substance use domains. The present study tested the hypothesis that the slope of positive and negative alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use expectancies during mid-adolescence (9th-10th grade) would predict use onset of each respective substance during late adolescence (11th-12th grade). Data from 3,396 ethnically diverse high schoo

Computer-Facilitated Screening and Brief Advice to Reduce Adolescents' Heavy Episodic Drinking: A Study in Two Countries.

PURPOSE: A computer-facilitated screening and brief advice (cSBA) intervention was previously shown to reduce drinking among U.S. adolescents but not among Czech youth. The purpose of this study was to assess cSBA effect on heavy episodic drinking (HED). METHODS: Participants were 12- to 18-year-olds at nine U.S. primary care offices (N = 2,096) and 10 Czech pediatrician-generalist offices (N = 589) who completed measurements only during an 18-month treatment-as-usual (TAU) phase. We then initiated the cSBA protocol for all participants and recruited the 18-month cSBA phase. Generalized Estim

Youth alcohol use and risky sexual behavior: evidence from underage drunk driving laws.

Recent research calls into question previous methods for estimating the relationship between alcohol use and risky sexual behavior among youths [Rashad, I., Kaestner, R., 2004. Teenage sex, drugs and alcohol use: problems identifying the cause of risky behaviors. Journal of Health Economics 23, 493-503]. This paper provides new evidence on this question by using reductions in heavy alcohol use among underage males induced by state adoption of very strict age-targeted "Zero Tolerance" drunk driving laws. I estimate reduced form models of the effects of Zero Tolerance laws on state gonorrhea rat

The information capacity of adolescent alcohol consumption indicators along a continuum of severity: A cross-national comparison of sixteen Central and Eastern European countries.

BACKGROUND: Because there is high variability among European countries in prevalence levels of various alcohol consumption measures, the informational value of adolescent's alcohol consumption indicators is uncertain. The present study aimed to examine information capacity and measurement invariance of different alcohol consumption indicators in adolescents from countries of the former Soviet (Eastern) Bloc in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). METHODS: Data were collected in 16 CEE countries, as part of the 2013/2014 wave of the Health Behavior in School-aged Children study. Data from adolesc

The Protective Impact of Social Support on the Cascade Rates Between Internalizing Problems and Alcohol Misuse in Adolescence.

PURPOSE: Alcohol misuse (i.e., frequent, heavy drinking) and internalizing problems (i.e., anxiety, depression) typically manifest in adolescence. Both follow cascading trajectories where presence of one confers risk for the other. Delaying or preventing the cascade allows more time and opportunity to address symptoms before consequences accumulate and disrupt development. One candidate moderator for their cascading trajectories is social support, which is independently negatively associated with both alcohol misuse and internalizing problems. We tested whether social support affects bidirecti

Youth Problem Drinking: The Role of Parental and Familial Relationships.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use continues to be an important global public health problem and adolescence seems to be a decisive period of time in the development of drinking patterns into adulthood. While most studies concentrate on frequency and amount of alcohol, fewer studies address "problem drinking." Gathering information on youth's alcohol-related behavioral consequences is especially important. OBJECTIVES: Current research focuses on gathering information on the background of problem drinking behavior with special attention to parental/familial relationships. METHODS: The survey was conduct

Adolescents' intention to reduce alcohol use: a health belief model approach to cancer prevention.

AIMS: Alcohol consumption is a well-established risk factor for health problems such as cancer; yet, public health campaigns have shown mixed results in their effectiveness to reduce alcohol use. Drawing on the health belief model, this study examines adolescents' self-reported alcohol consumption and explores drivers and barriers to abstaining from or reducing their alcohol consumption, with the ultimate goal of reducing alcohol-attributable cancers. METHOD: A large-scale, cross-sectional and cross-national online survey was conducted in 2024 among N = 4054 adolescents between 12 and 18 year
