Adult Ureteroscopy (A-URS) Checklist: A New Tool To Standardise Reporting in Endourology.

UNLABELLED: Ureteroscopy is increasingly being used for urolithiasis. Technological innovations have been accompanied by wide variations in practice patterns. At the same time, a common finding in many studies, especially systematic reviews, is that the heterogeneity of outcome measurements and lack of standardisation can limit both the reproducibility and generalisability of study findings. While many checklists are available to improve study reporting, there are no ureteroscopy-specific ones. The Adult-Ureteroscopy (A-URS) checklist is a practical aid for both researchers and reviewers for s

The clinical impact of ureteroscopy for upper tract urothelial carcinoma: A multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: With the development of kidney-sparing surgery and neoadjuvant chemotherapy, ureteroscopic biopsy (URSBx) has become important for the management of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from 744 patients with UTUC who underwent radical nephroureterectomy (RNU), stratified into no ureteroscopy (URS), URS alone, and URSBx groups. Intravesical recurrence-free survival (IVRFS) was examined using the Kaplan-Meier method. We conducted Cox regression analyses to identify risk factors for IVR. We investigated differences between clinical and p

A Patient with Fragmentation of a Calcified Ureteric Stent Requiring Ureteroscopy and Laser Lithotripsy.

BACKGROUND Encrustation of the ureteral stent is a common complication that occurs after a prolonged indwelling duration. Other identified risk factors in the literature include urinary sepsis, chemotherapy, chronic renal failure, metabolic or congenital abnormalities, and nephrolithiasis. This report presents the case of a 39-year-old man with nephrolithiasis and fragmentation of a calcified right ureteric stent that required ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy. CASE REPORT A 39-year-old man was initially admitted for ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy after the diagnosis of bilateral urolithi

Evaluation of fluid absorption during flexible ureteroscopy in an in vivo porcine model.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between renal pelvis pressure and fluid absorption during ureteroscopy (URS) in a live porcine model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Flexible URS (fURS) was performed in anaesthetised female Yorkshire pigs. Prior to performing fURS, a 0.3556-mm (0.014″) pressure-sensing guidewire (Comet™, Boston Scientific) was placed to monitor renal pelvis pressure. A simulated fURS procedure was then performed for 1 h. Infusion of irrigation fluid (5% ethanol in saline) at target renal pelvis pressures (37-150 mmHg) was maintained for 1 h using a pressure bag and real-time f

[Ureteroscopy in ureteric stone management: the need for laser lithotripsy and ancillary equipment].

Over the past several decades, there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of nephrolithiasis in the general population. Ureteroscopy has become the treatment of choice for a growing number of urologic conditions; ureteroscopy is still relatively new procedure and continue to undergo significant advancement. The recent technical development of small caliber semi rigid and flexible deflectable ureteroscopes and the development of diminutive intra-corporeal lithotripsy probes have made the retrograde access to urinary calculi throughout the entire ureter a more feasible and low-risk

Pelvic lipomatosis with ureteral calculi managed by flexible ureteroscopy: A case report.

RATIONALE: Pelvic lipomatosis (PL) is a benign disease characterized by overgrowth of adipose tissue in pelvic space. Hydronephrosis and ureterectasis are common complications caused by PL in urinary system. But PL accompanied with upper urinary tract calculi is rare. Also there has been no report of PL with ureteral calculi managed by flexible ureteroscopy (fURS). PATIENT CONCERNS: A 62-year-old man who has been diagnosed of PL was found to have a right-side ureteral calculi by ultrasound in the routine health examination. In addition, the patient has a history of open surgery of uretero-ves

Micro-ureteroscopy: Initial experience in the endoscopic treatment of pelvic ureteral lithiasis.

OBJECTIVES: To present to report the first case of ureteral lithiasis resolved using a new endoscopic approach, which we call microureteroscopy (m-URS) and attempts to reduce the ureteral damage caused by conventional instrumentation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We selected a 53-year-old patient with a 16-mm calculus in the right distal ureter. For endoscopic access, we used a 4.8 Fr sheath from the microperc set and fragmented the stone with a 230-micron laser fiber. RESULTS: Complete fragmentation of the stone was achieved. We placed a JJ catheter due to significant ureteral edema. The surgical

Ureteroscopy--an essential modern approach in upper urinary tract diagnosis and treatment.

In recent years, urology has seen a real explosion in the development of new technologies. Modern treatment techniques replaced classic therapeutic methods, among which open surgery had an important role. Endourologic therapies led to effective and safe interventions, increased patient comfort and reduced costs. The "Saint John" Emergency Clinical Hospital Department of Urology always intended to align to the new standards of urological treatment including, primarily, minimally invasive techniques, some of them being performed as national premieres. Ureteroscopy is one of them, thus introducin

A retrospective evaluation of 691 ureteroscopies: indications, procedures, success rate and complications.

In the period of 1983-1990, a total of 691 ureteroscopies were performed in 480 patients. The main indications for ureteroscopy were stones, stenoses or making a diagnosis. In one third of the cases, pathology was suspected in the renal pelvis or at the ureteropelvic junction, in one third in the distal third of the ureter, and in the remaining cases, in either the upper or the middle part of the ureter. The most frequent ureteroscopic procedures were diagnostic examination or surveillance and procedures involving treatment of stones. In the 1st attempt, the ureteroscope was introduced to the

Temporal evolution of urinary microbiology between acute obstructive pyelonephritis and delayed ureteroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Urolithiasis is a common disease associated with severe infectious complications such as acute obstructive pyelonephritis (AOP). This emergency requires antibiotic therapy and urinary drainage, with bladder and renal pelvic urine cultures (BUCap and PUCap, respectively) that are often discordant. However, microbiological evolution between AOP and delayed ureteroscopy remains poorly studied. This study evaluated the concordance between BUCap, PUCap, and preoperative bladder urine cultures before delayed ureteroscopy (poBUC). METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included

Ureteral access sheath or percutaneous nephrostomy during flexible ureteroscopy: which is better?

Studies in literature discussed the drawbacks of the ureteral access sheath use in flexible ureteroscopy and in the same time mentioned the benefits of ureteral access sheath in decreasing the incidence of urosepsis and better stone free rate. In the current study we aim to compare between percutaneous nephrostomy tube (PCN) insertion before flexible ureteroscopy and conventional ureteral access sheath (UAS) flexible ureteroscopy in terms of safety, efficacy and perioperative outcomes. In all, 100 Patients aged 20 to 67 years with upper ureteric stones and mild hydronephrosis or renal pelvic s

Optimal stenting duration following ureteroscopy and nephrolithotomy: systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal duration for ureteral stent placement following ureteroscopy remains unclear, with no consensus on its impact on patient outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the ideal stent duration by comparing post-procedure-related events (PREs) and complications. METHODS: A comprehensive search of MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Google Scholar identified studies comparing different durations of ureteral stenting after ureteroscopy. The primary outcome was the occurrence of PREs, while secondary outcomes focused on associated complications. RESULTS: Four
