BACKGROUND: The decision to treat a suspected case of pertussis with antibiotics is usually based on a clinical diagnosis rather than waiting for laboratory confirmation. The current guideline focuses on making the clinical diagnosis of pertussis-associated cough in adults and children.
METHODS: The American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) methodologic guidelines and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation framework were used. The Expert Cough Panel based their recommendations on findings from a systematic review that was recently published on the topic; fi

INTRODUCTION: Whooping cough (pertussis) is an acute respiratory infection primarily caused by Bordetella pertussis, which predominantly affects children. While the disease commonly presents with upper respiratory symptoms, it can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, encephalopathy, and even death. The association between respiratory infections and renal injury, specifically acute interstitial nephritis (AIN), remains poorly understood. This report describes a rare case of AIN in a patient with whooping cough.

This study compared the influence of age and immunization status on symptoms in pediatric patients with pertussis. The files of 60 children, aged 7 to 18 years and 20 infants aged up to 6 months, admitted to our pediatric hospital with a diagnosis of pertussis were reviewed. There were no between-group differences in day and night cough or vomiting. The older group had a longer mean interval to diagnosis than the infants, and the infant group had more symptoms of whooping cough, facial redness during cough, cyanosis, a higher white blood count, a higher percentage of lymphocytes, and more abno

Adenylate cyclase-hemolysin toxin is secreted and produced by three classical species of the genus Bordetella: Bordetella pertussis, B. parapertussis and B. bronchiseptica. This toxin has several properties such as: (i) adenylate cyclase activity, enhanced after interaction with the eukaryotic protein, calmodulin; (ii) a pore-forming activity; (iii) an invasive activity. It plays an important role in the pathogenesis of these Bordetella species responsible for whooping cough in humans or persistent respiratory infections in mammals, by modulating host immune responses. In contrast with other B

Three hundred and fifty-six patients in a large suburban practice (registered population 10,400), were diagnosed clinically with acute laryngitis/tracheitis or whooping cough (acute spasmodic cough of three weeks duration) between March 1996 and November 1997. Forty out of 145 who provided specimens for serological testing had evidence of recent infection with Bordetella pertussis. During the study a further 18 patients (mostly younger patients who presented early) had a diagnosis of pertussis confirmed by culture. Fifty-eight cases of pertussis in this population and time period was equivalen

To study the correlation between the level of Bordetella pertussis nucleic acid and clinical features of the disease in infants and young children and to investigate the risk factors for the development of severe pertussis. Using retrospective research methods, children aged 1 month-3 years who came to Hunan Children's Hospital from August 2023 to February 2024 and were diagnosed with pertussis for analysis. According to the logarithmic value of BP-DNA (log10 copies/ml), 35 cases were divided into the low load group, 78 cases were divided into the medium load group and 94 cases were divided in

Species of the genus Bordetella associate with various animal hosts, frequently causing respiratory disease. Bordetella pertussis is the primary agent of whooping cough and other Bordetella species can cause similar cough illness. Here, we report four complete genome sequences from isolates of different Bordetella species recovered from human respiratory infections.

To address the challenges of complex acoustic patterns and limited interpretability in pertussis cough sound recognition, this study proposes an interpretable deep learning framework based on adaptive time-frequency fusion and medically guided attention mechanisms. The framework first employs an Adaptive Time-Frequency Fusion Transformer to extract multi-scale temporal and spectral features of cough sounds, followed by a Medically-Guided Interpretable Attention Mapping module that aligns attention distributions with medically relevant acoustic features, achieving explicit interpretability in t

This study aims to examine changes in immunization coverage for diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps, rubella and hepatitis B during the academic calendars of 2003-2004 and 2007-2008 for students aged 13 to 14 years. Data were collected on an annual basis and systematically from the vaccination records 85% of adolescents enrolled in public institutions in Geneva. The immunization coverage increased for diphtheria, tetanus and polio by 2.3, 2.1 and 1.1 points respectively. Vaccination for pertussis (whooping cough) increased from 20.7% in 2003-2004 to 61% in 2007-2008. Vac

The number of pertussis cases reported through hospital-based passive surveillance severely underestimated the actual disease incidence. This may be due to factors such as atypical symptoms in the vaccine era, limited diagnostic criteria, insufficient clinician awareness, poor access to diagnostic technologies, and problems in monitoring and reporting management. Atypical pertussis often lacks specific symptoms or signs, making it prone to underdiagnosis or missed diagnosis in clinical practice. As a result, patients are not managed or treated effectively. This enables the pathogen to continue

Pertussis, or whooping cough, has recently reemerged as a major public health threat despite high levels of vaccination. The development of a novel pertussis vaccine, especially an intranasal (i.n.) vaccine is undoubtedly necessary, and mucosal adjuvants have been explored to enhance the immune response. In the present study, bacterium-like particles (BLPs) were adopted as a mucosal adjuvant for an i.n. pertussis vaccine and evaluated on the ability to induce serum and mucosal antibodies as well as potency against i.n. challenge in mice. Groups with or without aluminum adjuvant were also evalu

A vaccine is a preparation capable of inducing a specific and lasting immune response in the vaccinated patient to protect him in the event of exposure to the pathogen, against infection or to mitigate its consequences. Vaccination during pregnancy has a dual objective: to protect the vaccinated pregnant woman from potentially more severe infections due to pregnancy (flu, Covid-19) and to protect the newborn from birth from potentially serious infections during his first months (whooping cough, respiratory syncytial virus [RSV]). Currently four vaccines are recommended for all pregnant women (

Cough is a frequent reason for ED consultation. When one considers the epidemiological data, whooping cough must be considered in the differential of subacute cough. Clinical symptomatology is slightly different in the adult and unvaccinated child. An infection by Bordetella pertussis should be suspected when the history shows a persistent cough for more than 1 week in conjunction with other clinical elements. Several methods are available to establish a diagnosis: culture, PCR and bacterial serology. An early diagnosis will allow effective treatment, limit the transmission to unvaccinated inf

For bacteriological examinations of whooping cough patients, nasopharyngeal specimens were directly inoculated on the cyclodextrin solid medium (CSM) supplemented with 5 micrograms of cephalexin (CEX) per ml. The inoculated plates were cultured in an incubator at 35 degrees C for 3 to 7 days. During the period from 1990 to 1993, B. pertussis (43 strains) and B. parapertussis (1 strain) were isolated from 145 whooping cough patients and 34 relatives. B. pertussis were isolated sufficiently in June to December during the year. It was suggested that during this period epidemics of whooping cough

Bordetella pertussis, a causative agent of whooping cough, expresses BrkA, which confers serum resistance, but the closely related human pathogen that also causes whooping cough, Bordetella parapertussis, does not. Interestingly, B. parapertussis, but not B. pertussis, produces an O antigen, a factor shown in other models to confer serum resistance. Using a murine model of infection, we determined that O antigen contributes to the ability of B. parapertussis to colonize the respiratory tract during the first week of infection, but not thereafter. Interestingly, an O antigen-deficient strain of

OBJECTIVES: It has been reported that the prevalance of parkinsonism might be associated with exposure to whooping cough.
METHODS: Examination of levels of antibodies against Bordetella pertussis in serum using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests [presence of IgG antibodies against filamentous hemagglutinin and pertussis toxin (PT)] were performed in 81 persons (including 45 patients with controls) (age-matched groups).
RESULTS: Positive results were found in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), patients with other non-inflammatory diseases, and controls (about 40-45% in each

Vaccinations protect woman and her fetus against different infectious diseases, but their application on pregnant should be extremely responsible. In this review I present information about some infectious diseases and vaccines during pregnancy. Women, planning to get pregnant should be advised to do serological tests in order to find out their immune status against some infections, leading to fetal congenital malformations (rubella, chicken pox, hepatitis B) and if necessary to get vaccinated at least a month before pregnancy. Despite the lack of vaccines against Cytomegalovirus (CMV), parvov
