Malignant or progressive necrotizing otitis extrema is an uncommon but severe infectious condition of the external auditory canal. Over a period of four years, we treated 22 patients: 60% had diabetes (1/4 insulin dependent) and 13% were immunodepressed. The causal germ was Pseudomonas aeruginosa in 87% of cases. The pretherapeutic work-up included a computed tomography scan and a technetium scintigraphy to confirm diagnosis and assess extension. A review of 542 67Ga scans was undertaken to determine the incidence of 67Ga uptake in the "normal" breast, to establish factors modifying the uptke of 67Ga, and to define patterns of "normal" vs. pathologic accumulation. Tc-99m MIBI imaging has been used in nuclear oncology, but its role in detecting lymphomas has not been widely investigated. In this study, 31 patients with lymphomas (20 non-Hodgkin's and 11 Hodgkin's) underwent Tc-99m MIBI whole-body imaging. A total of 74 tumor lesions were detected in 25 patients, while the remaining 6 patients were disease-free. The diagnostic accuracy of MIBI imaging for lesion detection was 85%. BACKGROUND: Fibroblast activation protein (FAP) as a specific marker of activated fibroblasts can be visualized by positron emission tomography (PET) using Ga-68-FAP inhibitors (FAPI). INTRODUCTION: Skull base osteomyelitis typically presents in an immunocompromised patient with severe otalgia and otorrhoea. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the commonest pathogenic micro-organism, and reports of resistance to fluoroquinolones are now emerging, complicating management. We reviewed our experience of this condition, and of the local pathogenic organisms.
