PURPOSE: This study provides prospective and retrospective data on safety and performance results with the Bonebridge BCI 602 (MED-EL) active transcutaneous bone conduction implant in children.
METHODS: Audiological data were collected at 3 intervals (preoperative, initial activation and 3 months postoperative). Quality of life was assessed with the Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing (SSQ12/P), KID KINDL and Audio Processor Satisfaction Questionnaire (APSQ) as well as a postoperative questionnaire specifically designed for this study.
RESULTS: 22 pediatric patients (20 conductive/mixe

OBJECTIVES: Primary facial nerve tumors (FNTs) present in varying ways. In this study, the authors present their institutional experience with the management of facial nerve tumors, including their recommendations for available therapies such as observation, microsurgical decompression or removal, and stereotactic radiation. They emphasize the auditory and facial nerve function outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of all cases of FNT seen at the authors' tertiary care academic medical center over a 1

This study investigated differences in auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) using the paired-click paradigm between young adults frequently exposed to loud sounds and those not. Young adults with normal hearing were divided into two groups: an exposed group (n = 23), who were frequently exposed to loud sounds through music practice, and a control group (n = 21). Sound exposure levels (measured via smartwatch), hearing thresholds (0.125-16 kHz), distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) magnitudes, word intelligibility, and ABRs to single and paired clicks were obtained. For paired-click A

Older adults often complain about having difficulty understanding speech in noise, despite clinically normal hearing (D-SiN-NH). Two otopathologies known to decline with age and that are not reflected in the conventional audiogram are extended high-frequency (EHF) hearing impairment and cochlear synaptopathy (CS), both hypothesized to be responsible for D-SiN-NH. Nevertheless, the influence of EHF deficits on Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) wave I amplitude, a commonly used proxy measure for CS, remains equivocal. Furthermore, the combined effects of age-related changes in peripheral auditor

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of the Clip coupler attached to the stapes head in patients with unilateral congenital aural atresia (CAA).
METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included 16 Mandarin-speaking patients who had unilateral microtia accompanied by CAA. All patients were divided into two groups: the short-term follow-up group (n = 9) and the long-term follow-up group (n = 7). The floating mass transducer of the Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) was positioned in the stapes head by the Clip coupler. The safety of the VSB was investigated by comparing preop

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, single-subject repeated-measures design in which each subject serves as his/her own control.
SETTING: Departments of Otolaryngology at 4 hospitals in Germany and Austria.
PATIENTS: Subjects were 12 German-speaking adults who suffered from conductive or mixed hearing loss. The upper bone conduction threshold limit was set to 45 dB HL at frequencies between 500 Hz and 4 kHz.

A 41-year-old man presented after forceful penetrating ear injury. He had incapacitating vestibular symptoms. Computed tomography revealed pneumolabyrinth with a fractured stapes that was >90 degrees rotated and subluxed into the vestibule, such that the crura and capitulum could be seen in the vestibule. Surgical repair reversed the vestibular symptoms, but there was persistent hearing loss. Stapes fractures are unusual and rarely associated with subluxation into the vestibule. When this does occur, there is usually simple footplate depression. This case demonstrates a rare stapes fracture wi

OBJECTIVE: The goal is to confirm the effectiveness of cochlear implantation performed at the time of surgery for tumor removal, using a translabyrinthine approach.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective case review of two cases of vestibular schwannoma (VS) in the only hearing ear in which a cochlear implant (CI) was placed simultaneous to removal of VS through a modified enlarged translabyrinthine approach. The aim of the study is to confirm the effectiveness in terms of hearing rehabilitation.
SETTING: The study involved a tertiary referral center in a hospital setting.

OBJECTIVES: To discuss the diagnosis and management of children with fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss, especially focusing on those problems dealing with autoimmune inner ear disease.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective chart review of a large pediatric otolaryngology practice. A series of 40 children with progressive hearing losses was identified. Of that group, 22 children, aged 1.5 to 12.2 years at first audiogram, were considered to have fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss (FSNHL). Criteria for inclusion in the FSNHL group were threshold variations of 15 dB or more in at least one ear

OBJECTIVE: Clinicians encounter patients who report experiencing hearing difficulty (HD) even when audiometric thresholds fall within normal limits. When there is no evidence of audiometric hearing loss, it generates debate over possible biomedical and psychosocial etiologies. It is possible that self-reported HDs relate to variables within and/or outside the scope of audiology. The purpose of this study is to identify how often, on a population basis, people with normal audiometric thresholds self-report HD and to identify factors associated with such HDs.
DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional

OBJECTIVES: Abnormal hearing tests have been noted in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients in several studies, but the nature of the hearing deficit has not been clearly defined. The authors performed a cross-sectional study of both HIV+ and HIV- individuals in Tanzania by using an audiological test battery. The authors hypothesized that HIV+ adults would have a higher prevalence of abnormal central and peripheral hearing test results compared with HIV- controls. In addition, they anticipated that the prevalence of abnormal hearing assessments would increase with antiretroviral

OBJECTIVES: Although it has been well established that the prevalence of and severity of hearing loss increase with age, the contribution of familial factors to age-related hearing loss cannot be quantified. This is largely because hearing loss in older people has both genetic and environmental contributions. As environmental factors play an increasing role with age, it is difficult to delineate the separate contribution of genetic factors to age-related hearing loss. In a population-based survey of hearing loss in a representative older Australian community, we attempted to overcome this usin

Between 1991 and 1996, 35 patients had an intracanalicular tumor: 26 patients were operated via middle cranial fossa approach (MFA: 23 cases) or translabyrinthine approach (TL: 3 cases), 9 cases were supervised by audiovestibular testing and MRI. For the operated patients through MFA the functional hearing (pure tone loss < 50 dB and 100% vocal discrimination) was preserved in 47.8% of cases, facial function was grade I and II in 83% of cases and grade III in 17% of cases. One recurrence was noted and reoperated by TL. For the TL operated patients, the postoperative facial function was normal
