Executive functions for reading and writing in typical literacy development and dyslexia.

Experiment 1: Hierarchical linear modeling of growth trajectories of three executive functions (inhibition; rapid automatic switching, RAS; and combined inhibition/switching) in typical readers and writers showed steady improvement of inhibition but leveling of RAS and inhibition/switching about fourth grade. In multiple regressions, RAS, entered after inhibition, contributed uniquely to literacy outcomes at every grade. Improvement of executive functions over the first four grades predicted literacy outcomes at fourth grade. Experiment 2: For children with dyslexia, executive functions explai

Dominant optic atrophy, Kjer type. Linkage analysis and clinical features in a large British pedigree.

OBJECTIVES: To perform DNA linkage studies in an extensive 5-generation British pedigree with dominant optic atrophy and to validate the efficacy of domiciliary screening for affected members. METHODS: Family members received a domiciliary examination based on corrected visual acuity, color vision, visual field defects, and optic disc appearance; DNA linkage analysis was performed using 7 microsatellite markers on 3q27-qter. RESULTS: Based on the results of the ophthalmic examination, 15 members could be classified as definitely affected, 1 probably affected, and 25 unaffected. Two-point lin

Orbital decompression for thyroid orbitopathy.

BACKGROUND: Severe thyroid orbitopathy may result in optic neuropathy, corneal exposure and disfiguring proptosis. Orbital decompression has most commonly been performed for optic neuropathy, but with improved techniques, more patients are undergoing decompression for other indications. PURPOSE: This report evaluates the results and morbidity of orbital decompression for thyroid orbitopathy performed by one surgeon. METHODS: The records of 33 patients (53 orbits) undergoing orbital decompression for thyroid orbitopathy were analysed for changes in visual acuity and colour vision (where the i

Inside a synesthete's head: a functional connectivity analysis with grapheme-color synesthetes.

Grapheme-color synesthesia is a condition in which letters are perceived with an additional color dimension. To identify brain regions involved in this type of synesthesia and to analyze functional connectivity of these areas, 18 grapheme-color synesthetes and 18 matched controls were stimulated with letters and pseudo-letters presented in black and color in an event-related fMRI experiment. Based on the activation-differences between synesthetes and non-synesthetic controls regions of interest were defined. In a second analysis step functional connectivity was calculated using beta series cor

Superior cerebellar artery - a potential pitfall in transcranial posterior cerebral artery insonation.

PURPOSE: Transcranial color-coded duplexsonography (TCCD) of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) is commonly performed in an axial midbrain insonation plane. The proximal PCA is easily identified as a vessel, originating from the top of the basilar artery (BA). However, the initial segment of the superior cerebellar artery (SCA) also originates from the top segment of the BA and runs in parallel. Therefore, it is possible to confuse the two vessels. The aim of our study is to anatomically differentiate the proximal PCA and SCA by means of TCCD in the coronal plane using a transtemporal approac

Anticipation of cognitive demand during decision-making.

An abundance of evidence indicates that action selection is guided, at least in certain contexts, by anticipation of action outcomes. In one particularly clear demonstration of this principle, Bechara and colleagues, studying a gambling task, observed phasic skin conductance responses just prior to actions associated with a relatively high risk of monetary loss (Bechara et al. in J Neurosci 19:5473-5481, 1999; Bechara et al. in Science 275:1293-1295, 1997; Bechara et al. in Cereb Cortex 6:215-225, 1996). In the present work, we tested for the same effect in a paradigm where choices resulted no

Orbital decompression as an alternative management strategy for patients with benign tumors located at the orbital apex.

PURPOSE: Tumors located in the intraconal portion of the orbital apex, especially those inferior to the optic nerve, can be difficult to access surgically, carrying a significant risk of ocular morbidity. The purpose of this study was to investigate outcomes in 5 patients with benign-appearing but symptomatic tumors located in the intraconal portion of the orbital apex in which orbital decompression was performed as an alternative management strategy to resection. DESIGN: Retrospective interventional case series. PARTICIPANTS: Five patients were diagnosed with a compressive optic neuropathy

Phenotype in retinol deficiency due to a hereditary defect in retinol binding protein synthesis.

PURPOSE: To describe the phenotype caused by a retinol deficiency in a family with compound heterozygous missense mutations (Ile41Asn and Gly75Asp) in the gene for serum retinol binding protein (RBP). METHODS: The two affected sisters, 17 (BR) and 13 (MR) years old, were examined clinically and with perimetry, color vision tests, dark adaptometry, rod- and cone-isolated electroretinograms (ERGs), multifocal ERGs, electrooculograms (EOGs), and laboratory tests. RESULTS: There were no complaints besides night vision problems and no history of systemic disease. Visual acuity was reduced to 20/4

Evaluation of patients with obvious or suspected degenerative and dystrophic disorders of the retina, pigment epithelium and choroid. Experience from a Swedish referral center.

Between August 1, 1982, and December 31, 1988, 487 patients with clinically established or suspected diagnosis of a hereditary degenerative or dystrophic disorder of the ocular fundus or of a disorder of the optic pathways were evaluated with an extensive set of clinical and electrophysiological tests, 67% of the patients were referred from other eye departments. In order of magnitude the most frequently encountered diagnoses were: 1) 'functional' disturbances (18%), 2) disorders of the optic nerve (9%), 3) retinitis pigmentosa (8%), 4), 5) and 6) progressive cone dystrophy, disorders of the c

Functional and patient-reported outcomes of 3-dimensional-printed vs conventionally fabricated complete dentures: A randomized crossover clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: In this crossover randomized clinical trial, the authors evaluated the clinical performance of conventional and 3-dimensional-printed complete dentures, considering functional and patient-reported outcomes and postinsertion adjustments. METHODS: Twenty-three edentulous patients received 2 sets of complete dentures (digitally fabricated complete dentures [DDs] and conventionally fabricated complete dentures [CDs]). In the CD-DD group, patients received CDs and after 3 months they received DDs. For the DD-CD group, the protocol was reversed. The DD set was fabricated using a 3-dimen

Horse vision and obstacle visibility in horseracing.

Visual information is key to how many animals interact with their environment, and much research has investigated how animals respond to colour and brightness information in the natural world. Understanding the visibility of features in anthropogenic environments, and how animals respond to these, is also important, not least for the welfare and safety of animals and the humans they co-exist with, but has received comparatively less attention. One area where this is particularly pertinent is animal sports such as horseracing. Here there is a need to understand how horses see and respond to obs

Comparative Study of the Gross Interpretation of Phototesting and Objective Measurement with Using a Spectrophotometer for Patients with Psoriasis and Vitiligo Treated with Narrow-band UVB.

BACKGROUND: Determination of the minimal erythema dose (MED) is important for developing a phototherapy protocol and to diagnosis photosensitivity disorders. But obtaining a precise and reproducible MED is quite difficult because a phototest for erythema is based on subjective assessment. OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to compare the gross interpretation of a phototest and the objective measurement using a spectrophotometer for determining the parameters of cutaneous narrow-band UVB (NBUVB) therapy. METHODS: A total of 14 psoriasis and 10 vitiligo patients who receiving NBUVB phot

Human pharmacology of MDMA: pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and disposition.

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, ecstasy) is a widely misused psychostimulant drug abused among large segments of the young population. Pharmacologically it displays effects related to amphetamine-type drugs and a set of distinctive effects (closeness to others, facilitation to interpersonal relationship, and empathy) that have been named by some authors "entactogen" properties. MDMA is a potent releaser and/or reuptake inhibitor of presynaptic serotonin (5-HT), dopamine (DA), and norepinephrine (NE). These actions result from the interaction of MDMA with the membrane transporters invo

Matching reality in the arts: self-referential neural processing of naturalistic compared to surrealistic images.

How are works of art that present scenes that match potential expectations processed in the brain, in contrast to such scenes that can never occur in real life because they would violate physical laws? Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the processing of surrealistic and naturalistic images in visual artworks. Looking at naturalistic paintings leads to a significantly higher activation in the visual cortex and in the precuneus. Humans apparently own a sensitive mechanism even for artistic representations of the visual world to separate the impossible from what potenti

Residual cognitive impairments in remitted depressed patients.

Depressive disorders are associated with various cognitive impairments. Studies on whether or not these impairments persist into the euthymic phase have shown conflicting results, due to differences in test versions and in study samples. In this paper, we aimed to compare the cognitive performance of remitted depressed patients with that of age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers across a wide range of cognitive domains. In two studies, we found few differences on neutral as well as emotional information processing tests. The findings indicate that remitted depressed patients who use antide

Interhemispheric neural summation in the split brain: effects of stimulus colour and task.

Four split-brained subjects, two subjects with agenesis of the corpus callosum, and 14 normal subjects performed two tasks requiring responses to red or green disks, briefly presented either singly in the left visual field, singly in the right visual field, or simultaneously in both visual fields. In Experiment 1, simple reaction times to these stimuli, regardless of colour, were recorded (the Go-Both Task), and found to be faster to bilateral-redundant stimulus pairs, than to single stimuli. This so-called "redundancy gain" was much larger for acallosal or split-brained subjects than for norm
