Novel CACNA1F mutations in Japanese patients with incomplete congenital stationary night blindness.

PURPOSE: Although it was reported that congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) could be divided into complete and incomplete CSNB clinically in 1986, it was not until 1998 that the two types were found to be distinct clinical diseases by molecular genetic analysis. The purpose of this article is to report mutations in the retina-specific calcium channel alpha1-subunit gene (CACNA1F) in Japanese patients with incomplete CSNB and to describe the clinical features of these patients. METHODS: Seven patients from five separate Japanese families with incomplete CSNB were examined. Genomic DNA

[Early and late occurring consecutive exotropia following a medial rectus faden operation].

UNLABELLED: The main advantage of the bilateral medial rectus faden operation (posterior fixation suture) for the treatment of essential infantile esotropia is the low occurrence of delayed consecutive exotropia. Nevertheless, this unwanted complication also occasionally occurs after a faden operation. PATIENTS: All patients operated on between 1988 and 1997 for subsequent exotropia following bimedial faden operations without recessions were included in this study. Surgery for exotropia consisted of uni- or bilateral lateral rectus muscle recession or in removing the faden with or without res

Assignment of the gene for complete X-linked congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB1) to Xp11.3.

X-linked congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) is a nonprogressive retinal disorder characterized by a presumptive defect of neurotransmission between the photoreceptor and bipolar cells. Carriers are not clinically detectable. A new classification for CSNB includes a complete type, which lacks rod function by electroretinography and dark adaptometry, and an incomplete type, which shows some rod function on scotopic testing. The refraction in the complete CSNB patients ranges from mild to severe myopia; the incomplete ranges from moderate hyperopia to moderate myopia. To map the gene re

Machine learning classification of cycloplegic refractive status in children and adolescents using non-cycloplegic data across ten provincial-level administrative divisions.

BACKGROUND: Cycloplegic refraction remains the gold standard for assessing refractive error in children, yet its application in large-scale screening is limited. Machine learning offers a promising approach for screening and triage by leveraging non-cycloplegic data for refractive classification. METHODS: This study utilized a multicenter dataset comprising 54,374 participants aged 5–18 years from ten provincial-level administrative divisions (PLADs) across China. We developed and validated four machine learning models (LightGBM, XGBoost, Random Forest, and MLP) and a multinomial logistic regr

Transepithelial Versus Conventional PRK: A Randomized Controlled Study.

INTRODUCTION: Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (t-PRK) is an updated maneuver based on the proven surgical procedure of conventional photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for the correction of ametropia. Unlike conventional PRK, which is a two-step process involving the physical removal of the corneal epithelium prior to excimer laser treatment of the stroma, t-PRK uses the excimer laser to complete both activities in a single-step procedure. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, controlled, contralateral, masked, single-surgeon study of adult subjects with myopia with a manifes
