[In vivo analysis of bone calcium by localized neutron activation of the hand in osteoporosis].

The calcium concentration of the bones of the hand measured by neutron activity was lowered in 93% of osteoporotic women aged between 50 and 60 years and in 66% of women between 60 and 70 years, whereas from the 8th decade onwards, only 5% had a bone calcium concentration of the hand less than that of controls. In the male sex, nearly 80% of osteoporotic patients, had a calcium concentration of the hand less than that of controls whatever their age. Considering the radiological criterion retained for the diagnosis of osteoporosis, the existence of at least one fracture of a vertebral body, the

Application of in vivo activation analysis to the compartmental study of sodium in the hand.

Sodium kinetics were studied in the hands of 14 subjects by local in vivo neutron activation analysis. Hands were irradiated with 252 Cf sources giving absorbed doses of 8 cGy. The variation in 24Na radioactivity was plotted against time, and each curve fitted to a function that was the sum of two exponentials. Two pools were identified, one corresponding to fast turnover, with a half-life of about one hour, the other to a slower turnover process with a half-life averaging 79 h if the calcium concentration of the hand bones is normal, and 35 h if it is subnormal. The mean ratio of calcium to s

In vitro measurement of phosphorus in small bone biopsies using 14 MeV neutron activation analysis.

In studying diseases of bone such as osteoporosis and renal osteodystrophy it is important to have an index of change in bone mineral content. For this purpose we describe a method for measuring the phosphorus content of 100--150 mg bone biopsies. Femoral and iliac crest biopsies from 6 cadavers were each paired with a standard bone of similar size and irradiated with 14 MeV neutrons for 10 minutes. A special rotor ensured the same activating flux across both sample and standard bone which were both wrapped in aluminium foil. The 28Al generated from bone phosphorus (31P(n,alpha)28Al) and the 2

The neural basis of creative thought: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of 787 experiments.

Humans can create impressive art, make major scientific breakthroughs, and generate creative solutions that solve everyday life problems. But how are these creative activities supported by the brain? This question is of great scientific interest but remains unanswered. New hypotheses, grounded in converging evidence from cognitive neuroscience, are needed to guide breakthroughs in understanding the neural basis of creative thought. It has long been suggested that creativity is a distinct mental function. However, converging clinical-cognitive neuroscience evidence is starting to suggest that c

Functional and structural abnormalities of the speech disorders: a multimodal activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Speech disorders are associated with different degrees of functional and structural abnormalities. However, the abnormalities associated with specific disorders, and the common abnormalities shown by all disorders, remain unclear. Herein, a meta-analysis was conducted to integrate the results of 70 studies that compared 1843 speech disorder patients (dysarthria, dysphonia, stuttering, and aphasia) to 1950 healthy controls in terms of brain activity, functional connectivity, gray matter, and white matter fractional anisotropy. The analysis revealed that compared to controls, the dysarthria grou

The human cerebellum in reward anticipation and outcome processing: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

The cerebellum generates internal prediction models and actively compares anticipated and actual outcomes in order to reach a desired end state. In this process, reward can serve as a reinforcer that shapes internal prediction models, enabling context-appropriate behavior. While the involvement of the cerebellum in reward processing has been established in animals, there is no detailed account of which cerebellar regions are involved in reward anticipation and outcome processing in humans. To this end, an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies was per

Single-cell analysis of lizard blastema fibroblasts reveals phagocyte-dependent activation of Hedgehog-responsive chondrogenesis.

Lizards cannot naturally regenerate limbs but are the closest known relatives of mammals capable of epimorphic tail regrowth. However, the mechanisms regulating lizard blastema formation and chondrogenesis remain unclear. Here, single-cell RNA sequencing analysis of regenerating lizard tails identifies fibroblast and phagocyte populations linked to cartilage formation. Pseudotime trajectory analyses suggest spp1+-activated fibroblasts as blastema cell sources, with subsets exhibiting sulf1 expression and chondrogenic potential. Tail blastema, but not limb, fibroblasts express sulf1 and form ca

Analysis of Tumor Heterogeneity Through AXL Activation in Primary Resistance to EGFR Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors.

INTRODUCTION: EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors are standard therapeutic agents for patients with advanced NSCLC harboring EGFR mutations. Nevertheless, some patients exhibit primary resistance to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors in the first-line treatment setting. AXL, a member of the TYRO3, AXL, and MERTK family of receptor tyrosine kinases, is involved in primary resistance to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors in EGFR-mutated NSCLC. METHODS: We investigated spatial tumor heterogeneity using autopsy specimens and a patient-derived cell line from a patient with EGFR-mutated NSCLC having primary

Transcriptional analysis of neutrophils from patients with Behçet's disease reveals activation and chemotaxis of neutrophils.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis characterized by neutrophil activation with unclear pathogenesis. This study aimed to explore the transcriptional profiles of BD neutrophils and identify specific gene signatures. We performed RNA sequencing on neutrophils from treatment-naive active BD patients and healthy controls, then analyzed differentially expressed genes (DEGs), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways (KEGG) and transcription regulatory network. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western Blot were used to validate chemotaxis-related DEGs expression. We detected 567 DEG

Transcriptome Analysis of In Vitro Fertilization and Parthenogenesis Activation during Early Embryonic Development in Pigs.

Parthenogenesis activation (PA), as an important artificial breeding method, can stably preserve the dominant genotype of a species. However, the delayed development of PA embryos is still overly severe and largely leads to pre-implantation failure in pigs. The mechanisms underlying the deficiencies of PA embryos have not been completely understood. For further understanding of the molecular mechanism behind PA embryo failure, we performed transcriptome analysis among pig oocytes (meiosis II, MII) and early embryos at three developmental stages (zygote, morula, and blastocyst) in vitro fertili
