Microbiologic findings 1 year after partial- and full-mouth scaling in the treatment of moderate chronic periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact on microbiologic variables of full-mouth scaling (FMS) and conventional scaling and root planing (cSRP) after 12 months. METHOD AND MATERIALS: In a prospective randomized controlled clinical study, 37 volunteers with moderate chronic periodontitis were treated by FMS or by cSRP in two sessions at 4-week intervals. Clinical attachment level, probing depth, and bleeding on probing were recorded at baseline as well as at 6 and 12 months. Four subgingival plaque samples were taken from the deepest sites in premolars and molars at baseline and after 12 months.

Interleukin-10 polymorphisms affect the key periodontal pathogens in Chinese periodontitis patients.

Interleukin-10 (IL-10) polymorphisms have been shown to affect IL-10 production. This study investigated the influences of IL-10 polymorphisms on the susceptibility to chronic periodontitis (CP) and aggressive periodontitis (AP), and their possible role in the quantity of subgingival bacteria Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. 92 CP patients, 83 AP patients and 91 periodontal healthy controls were recruited. Serum IL-10 concentration was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Gene polymorphisms were determined by multiplex SNaPshot technique. Ba

Bacterial profile of aggressive periodontitis in Morocco: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) is one of the most severe forms of periodontal diseases. In Morocco, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans has been strongly associated with AgP, however limited knowledge is available about the implication of other periodontal pathogens in this entity. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to evaluate the composition of the subgingival microbiota in Moroccan patients with AgP. METHODS: Subgingival plaque samples were collected from 50 aggressive, 13 localized and 37 generalized periodontitis patients. Samples from 20 chronic periodontitis (ChP)

Association of three bacterial species and periodontal status in Chinese adults: an epidemiological approach.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythia are oral pathogens associated with periodontitis. The association between these three bacteria and periodontal disease has been reported in populations of many countries. However, corresponding data in Chinese populations are still lacking. The aim of this study was to detect these pathogens in subgingival plaque collected from 468 subjects with chronic periodontitis in a group of Chinese adults by using a PCR method and to determine the degree of association between the target bacteria and periodontal st

Periodontopathogen- and host-derived immune response in acute coronary syndrome.

Owing to molecular mimicry, periodontal pathogen carriage may result in a systemic cross-reactive immune response with the host. The analyses were performed to investigate if serum antibody levels to human heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) are associated with the antibody levels and salivary carriage of two periodontal pathogens, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, as well as with the dental status in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). ACS patients (n = 141) were monitored at baseline when entering to hospital, and after 1 week, 3 months and 1 year. Period

Molecular microbiological evaluation of subgingival biofilm sampling by paper point and curette.

The present clinical study aimed to investigate if there are differences in microbiological outcomes dependent on the subgingival biofilm collection method. Subgingival biofilm samples were collected from the four deepest pockets (>5 mm) of 17 patients with aggressive periodontitis (AgP) and 33 patients with chronic periodontitis (CP), first by paper point and thereafter by curette. Samples obtained with the same method were pooled together from each patient and forwarded for molecular microbiological analysis by a commercially available assay (IAI Pado Test 4.5) that estimates total bacterial

Occurrence of periodontal pathogens among patients with chronic periodontitis.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the presence of the periodontal pathogens that form the red complex (Tannerella forsythia, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola) and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in patients with chronic periodontitis. The sample consisted of 29 patients with a clinical and radiographic diagnosis of chronic periodontitis based on the criteria of the American Academy of Periodontology (3). Samples for microbiological analysis were collected from the four sites of greatest probing depth in each patient, totaling 116 samples. These samples were pro

[A.a.: the bacterium with the long name].

The introduction of Kodak's chairside test kit, Evalusite, for Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (A.a.) and two other oral bacteria has stimulated this study of the relation between A.a. and periodontal destruction. A.a. has been associated with oral abscesses, brain abscesses, endocarditis and localized juvenile periodontitis. However, in all periodontal studies A.a. also has been observed in 'ordinary' periodontal pockets and subjects without active periodontal destruction. Based on longitudinal studies it is concluded, that there is no proof for a causal relationship between A.a. and per

Probiotics and periodontal health.

Periodontitis is one of the most common chronic inflammatory diseases. The etiology is clearly bacterial and a number of putative bacterial pathogens have been associated with the disease, including Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Tannerella forsythus and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Comparatively, little attention has been paid to the identification of health-associated and potentially beneficial bacterial species that may reside in the gingival sulcus. Probiotic technology represents a breakthrough approach to maintaining oral health by using natural beneficial bacteria, commonly found i

Periodontal microbiology in Latin America.

This review article describes the microbiota associated with periodontal disease in Latin America. This vast territory includes 22 nations, which show great ethnic diversity, with large groups of White people, Black people, Mestizo people and Native people. Widespread poverty and limited access to education and health-care services, including periodontal care, are prominent predisposing factors for destructive periodontal disease in Latin America. Black people and Mestizo people seem to have particularly severe periodontal disease and are frequently colonized by the major periodontal pathogens

GWAS of Serum Antibodies to Microbial Biomarker Species of Periodontitis.

Serum antibody levels against microbial biomarkers of periodontitis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, are associated especially with the presence of these species in the oral cavity. We investigated the genetic basis of host antibody responses against these species through a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify the genetic determinants of this immune reactivity. Serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody levels against A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis were determined using multiserotype enzyme-linked immunosorbent a

Periodontopathogenic bacteria in subglottic samples from patients undergoing elective intubation for general anesthesia: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Translocation of periodontal pathogens into the respiratory tract could either cause pneumonia or disrupt local defense mechanisms, predisposing the host to infection by respiratory pathogens. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the levels of periodontopathogenic bacteria in subglottic samples of intubated and mechanically ventilated patients and the impact of oral decontamination with chlorhexidine (CHX) on subglottic levels of these microorganisms. METHODS: Patients scheduled to undergo elective surgical procedures requiring endotracheal intubation and mechanical v
