Characterization of airborne mineral dusts associated with farming activities in rural Alberta, Canada.

The dry and windy climate of the Western Canadian prairie provinces, combined with large scale agricultural activities, results in aerosolization or organic and mineral dusts. The purpose of this study was to conduct an environmental and minerological analysis of these dusts in order to estimate the risk for pneumoconiosis in exposed farmer populations. Two districts in central/southern Alberta were chosen for study. One of these regions was representative of a predominantly grain growing district with minimal use of irrigation; the other region was largely devoted to forage and irrigated crop

Wastewater-based surveillance of hepatitis A virus across municipalities and neighbourhoods in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is infrequently diagnosed in Canada, and little data are available regarding its epidemiology. Transmitted fecal-orally, HAV is an ideal candidate for wastewater-based surveillance (WBS). We set out to characterize HAV using WBS in a low-prevalence setting. METHODS: This observational study was conducted in the province of Alberta, Canada. Weekly composite wastewater samples were collected from eight municipalities (populations 7909-1,306,784), and eight neighbourhoods within Calgary, the largest city. HAV genomic material was quantified using RT-

Epidemiology and Outcomes of Bronchiectasis in Alberta, Canada: A 15-Year Population-Based Study.

RATIONALE: Bronchiectasis is a chronic, progressive airway disease with rising global prevalence. However, no population-based epidemiologic study of adult bronchiectasis has been published from Canada, leaving the national burden, outcomes, and costs undefined. OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence, prevalence, mortality, health care utilization, and direct health care costs of bronchiectasis among adults in Alberta, overall and by airway disease phenotype. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study (2010-2025) using linked Alberta provincial administrative health

A design of experiments study of nasal spray deposition in the alberta idealized nasal inlet.

Intranasal administration of drugs possesses numerous advantages such as easy and direct application, rapid onset of action and reduced risk of systemic adverse effects. The nasal cavity consists of several regions and especially the respiratory region, known as the turbinates, is considered favorable for drug uptake. Current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines for in vitro testing of nasal spray formulations recommend characterization of emitted dose, plume geometry, spray pattern, and particle size distribution. However, recommendations or guidelines for assessing regional depositi

Trends and Disparities in the Receipt of Treatment for Colon Cancer in Older Adults in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Adults aged ≥ 70 years represent approximately half of all patients diagnosed with colon cancer, but undertreatment in this population persists. Recent guidelines have aimed to reduce age-related biases in the treatment of colon cancer. We evaluated the age-related disparities in the receipt of curative-intent surgical and medical treatment of colon cancer, and their changes over time. METHODS: This was a population-based cohort study of adult patients diagnosed with colon adenocarcinoma between 2010 and 2018 in Alberta, Canada. Surgery receipt was assessed in patients with stage

Association between nitrogen dioxide and incident breast cancer in Alberta's tomorrow project.

Breast cancer is a significant global health concern, with millions of cases diagnosed annually. Risk factors for breast cancer include obesity, physical inactivity, poor diet, and alcohol use. Urbanization introduces exposures such as traffic-related air pollution (TRAP), which may impact breast cancer risk. To assess the impact of TRAP, measured in this study using nitrogen dioxide (NO2), on the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer we conducted a secondary analysis of baseline and follow-up data from the Alberta Tomorrow Project (ATP) cohort, linked to geographic data at the postal code lev

Research priorities in infection prevention and control in Alberta, Canada: a modified Delphi process.

BACKGROUND: Infection prevention and control (IPC) measures are critical to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections. AIM: To identify, by consensus, specific IPC research questions where IPC evidence gaps exist, in the setting of Alberta Health Services/Covenant Health, Canada. METHODS: A multidisciplinary committee informed the consensus process. Individuals with expertise in IPC (Delphi panel) identified an initial set of questions (Delphi Round 1). Questions were grouped into common themes and categories. The committee conducted an interim prioritization to short-list the rese

Safer supply and political interference in medical practice: Alberta's Narcotics Transition Services.

Across much of Canada, opioid poisoning deaths have been increasing due to a toxic, contaminated, and unpredictable drug supply. Multiple prescribed safer supply pilot projects are being implemented and evaluated in an attempt to save lives. In the province of Alberta, however, new regulations introduced in 2022 significantly constrain safer supply prescribing by banning the prescription, dispensing, and administration of safer supply outside of a very limited number of clinics. In this commentary, we review prescribed safer supply programs in Canada and outline how the Alberta Government's ch

The impact of delaying surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic in Alberta: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic overwhelmed health care systems, leading many jurisdictions to reduce surgeries to create capacity (beds and staff) to care for the surge of patients with COVID-19; little is known about the impact of this on patients whose surgery was delayed. The objective of this study was to understand the patient and family/caregiver perspective of having a surgery delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Using an interpretative descriptive approach, we conducted interviews between Sept. 20 and Oct. 8, 2021. Adult patients who had their surgery delayed or cancelled

Virtual opioid agonist treatment: Alberta's virtual opioid dependency program and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Virtually delivered healthcare (telehealth, telemedicine) has the potential to reduce gaps in access to opioid agonist therapy (OAT). Barriers to accessing OAT such as lack of transportation, in-person induction requirements, employment demands and limited childcare options reduce treatment opportunities for clients. A completely virtual model of care has been developed in Alberta, Canada. This paper introduces the unique virtual clinic model and describes outcomes from that model. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted using datasets within existing electronic health

Canine nematode and Giardia spp. infections in dogs in Edmonton, Alberta, the "CANIDA" study.

BACKGROUND: Canine intestinal parasite prevalence may be influenced by geographical region, age, and health status of the dog. Behaviors such as predation, scavenging, or roaming as well as routine administration of anthelmintics also play a role. The purpose of this study was to evaluate fecal test results using zinc sulfate flotation by centrifugation combined with coproantigen testing directed at protein antigens excreted or secreted by hookworms (Ancylostoma spp. Uncinaria stenocephala), ascarids (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris spp. Baylisascaris spp.), whipworms (Trichuris vulpis), and Giardi

Epidemiological and Clinical Characteristics of Alveolar Echinococcosis: An Emerging Infectious Disease in Alberta, Canada.

Human alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a zoonotic cestode infection which is usually fatal in the absence of treatment. Treatment involves major surgery or indefinite antiparasitic therapy. The incidence is rising in Europe and Asia, with an increased risk observed in immunocompromised individuals. Previously, AE acquisition in North America was extremely rare, except for one remote Alaskan Island. Recent studies have demonstrated a new European-like strain of Echinococcus multilocularis (Em) in wildlife and in human AE in western Canada. We report the experience of all AE patients diagnosed in

Use of the Papanicolaou test in women under 25 years of age in Southern Alberta.

OBJECTIVES: The introduction of the Papanicolaou (Pap) test in Canada has led to a decline in both the incidence of, and mortality from, cervical cancer. However, cervical cancer in women under the age of 25 is rare, and the updated Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care recommendations advise against screening by Pap test in this age group. Screening under the age of 25 can lead to false-positive results or to treatment of lesions that may spontaneously regress. The purpose of this observational study was to determine how many Pap tests are performed in women less than 25 years of age
