Epidural analgesia vs. general anesthesia for cesarean section.

A prospective study based upon interviews included 92 women who had undergone cesarean section, 38% with epidural analgesia and 62% under general anesthesia. The two groups were compared with respect to anesthesiological complications, postoperative morbidity and birth experience. The puerperal period was less complicated after epidural analgesia than after general anesthesia. There was a quicker re-establishment of the gastrointestinal function after epidural analgesia and the patients were more quickly mobilized and less tired. The overall morbidity after cesarean section, 16%, was lower tha

[Disclosure of a fatal pheochromocytoma during general anesthesia].

A case is reported of a phaeochromocytoma revealed during a general anaesthesia by a sudden hypertensive crisis associated with acute pulmonary oedema and signs of extreme sympathetic stimulation (bilateral mydriasis, piloerection, peripheral vasoconstriction). Aortic angiography revealed the tumour lying in an ectopic retroperitoneal situation and spasm in the superior mesenteric arterial territory. The patient died at the thirtieth hour from septic shock due to necrotizing colitis.

Spontaneous-ventilation general anesthesia for outpatients using enflurane.

We have described our technique for general anesthesia for outpatients using a mixture of nitrous oxide, oxygen, and enflurane with spontaneous ventilation through a Bain anesthetic circuit. In our experience, surgical excision of impacted teeth, multiple extractions and alveoloplasty, enucleation of simple cysts, excision of benign tumors, and other similar operations have been done efficiently with these anesthetic techniques. More than 500 such cases have been managed without significant complication. The concepts of selection and preparation of patients, airway security and protection duri

Anaphylactic reactions to muscle relaxants under general anesthesia.

Eleven patients who suffered a reaction to the administration of muscle relaxants during induction of general anesthesia were explored using skin tests, leukocyte histamine release, lymphocyte transformation test, and the Prausnitz-Küstner test (P-K). Fifteen normal subjects served as controls. Patients who suffered a reaction showed considerable cutaneous hypersensitivity to muscle relaxants. Leukocyte histamine release was positive in three cases and the P-K test was positive in one case. These findings suggest possible specific serum IgE antibodies to muscle relaxants. However, reliable dis

Combined general and neuraxial anesthesia versus general anesthesia alone for laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a meta-analysis of pain control and hemodynamic stability.

Combined general and neuraxial anesthesia (CGNA) is an alternative technique that may enhance intraoperative outcomes and reduce postoperative pain in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In this meta-analysis, we aimed to compare the perioperative outcomes of CGNA with those of general anesthesia alone. A systematic search of PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science, and gray literature was conducted from inception to July 2024. We evaluated postoperative pain at 2, 4, 6, and 12 h after surgery using the Visual Analogue Scale. Intraoperative outcomes, including systolic, diastoli

General Endotracheal Anesthesia vs Total Intravenous Anesthesia for Children Undergoing Low-Risk Cardiac Catheterization.

Historically, children undergoing cardiac catheterization have been managed with general endotracheal anesthesia (GETA). However, recent practice has favored general anesthesia with total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). This study compares procedural outcomes in the pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory (PCCL) for children undergoing low-risk cardiac catheterization with GETA vs. TIVA. We reviewed all patients aged 1-12 years, who underwent outpatient diagnostic or simple interventional catheterization from January 2016 to September 2023. Patients were divided into cohorts by type of ane

Postoperative delirium after short-acting spinal anesthesia and general anesthesia after shared decision-making.

ObjectivePrevious studies have shown that the postoperative delirium rate does not differ between anesthetic techniques in randomized controlled trials. Subjective concerns such as anxiety and pain are often not adequately addressed in randomized controlled trials and reported to be associated with postoperative delirium. Shared decision-making is reported to have an impact on anxiety and pain. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of shared decision-making while making a choice between spinal and general anesthesia on postoperative delirium incidence.MethodsThis prospect

Laparoscopic Totally Extraperitoneal Inguinal Hernia Repair Under Combined Spinal Epidural Anesthesia Versus General Anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most frequently used elective surgical operations in the world. General anesthesia (GA) has risks and routine postoperative complications, such as nausea, vomiting, throat irritation, and postoperative pain. Regional anesthesia (RA) has many advantages over GA, such as faster recovery, less postoperative pain, nausea, and vomiting, and less hemodynamic compromise. We aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of combined spinal and epidural anesthesia (CSEA) in preventing shoulder pain in patients undergoing totally extraperitoneal herniorrhap

Can Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia Techniques For Tracheostomy Be An Alternative To General Anesthesia?

Introduction The cervical plexus block (CPB) has been used for a long time for both analgesia and anesthesia in carotid endarterectomy and thyroid operations. To be unfamiliar with the technique and its perceived difficulty, potential risks, and possible adverse effects such as intravascular injection has limited broader use before the practical use of ultrasound. We hypothesize that the cervical plexus block can provide adequate anesthesia in tracheostomy cases and provide excellent anesthesia comfort when combined with a translaryngeal block. Methods This double-blinded, randomized 29 patien

Complications following regional anesthesia versus general anesthesia for the treatment of distal radius fractures.

PURPOSE: Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) are commonly utilized for the repair of distal radius fractures (DRF). While general anesthesia (GA) is typically administered for ORIF, recent studies have also demonstrated promising results with the usage of regional anesthesia (RA) in the surgical treatment of distal radius fractures. This study will compare complication rates between the use of RA versus GA for ORIF of DRFs. METHODS: A multi-institutional surgical registry was utilized to identify patients who had undergone ORIF for DRFs from 2005 to 2018-these patients were stratified

Regional Anesthesia. An Alternative to General Anesthesia in the Management of Neonatal Testicular Torsion.

We report a case of a 1-day-old male newborn with neonatal testicular torsion, in whom an immediate orchiectomy with prophylactic orchidopexy under caudal regional anesthesia was practiced. The aim of this report is to propose early surgical intervention with caudal regional anesthesia as an alternative in order to avoid possible side effects related to general anesthesia and the complications related to a missed asynchronous torsion of the contralateral testis.

Spinal anesthesia for pediatric urological surgery: Reducing the theoretic neurotoxic effects of general anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Spinal anesthesia (SA) is an effective technique that has been used in children for years. With growing concern with regard to the risks of general anesthesia (GA), we developed a SA program to provide an alternative option. We present our initial experience with this program. OBJECTIVE: To implement a SA program at a large tertiary care pediatric center and assess the safety and efficacy of the technique as an alternative to GA for urologic surgery. STUDY DESIGN/METHODS: We prospectively collected data on all children undergoing SA at our institution. We recorded demographics, p

Spinal anesthesia using Taylor's approach helps avoid general anesthesia in short stature asthmatic patient.

The case history of a 35-year-old female patient with short stature is presented. She was posted for rectopexy in view of rectal prolapse. She was a known case of bronchial asthma. She had crowding of intervertebral spaces, which made administration of spinal anesthesia via the normal route very difficult. Taylor's approach for administration of the same was tried and proved successful, thus saving the patient from receiving general anesthesia in the presence of bronchial asthma, for a perineal surgery. The possible cause for the difficulty in administration of spinal anesthesia and the Taylor
