Molecular based confirmation of puma meat sausages implicated in trichinellosis outbreaks in Argentina.

Trichinellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Trichinella, with the main source of infection being the consumption of pork and pork-derived products. However, it can also be acquired from eating the meat from wild animals targeted for sport hunting. The objectives of this study were: 1) to develop and implement a molecular method for the identification of Sus scrofa (pig and wild boar) and Puma concolor (Puma) meat in sausages eaten raw, which were linked to trichinellosis outbreaks occurring in Córdoba, Buenos Aires and La Pampa provinces, Argentina, in 2010, 2021, and 2022, respectively; an

Towards learning and memory risk assessment with human brain organoids: barriers and opportunities.

Neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and learning disabilities, as well as neurodegenerative disorders, affect millions of people in the United States alone. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to their onset, yet traditional neurotoxicity testing often fails to identify specific risks or mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment. Human brain organoids (hBOs), also called neural organoids or brain microphysiological systems, are three-dimensional (3D) stem cell-derived models that recapitulate key features of human brain dev

Molecular Biomarkers of Electroconvulsive Therapy Effects and Clinical Response: Understanding the Present to Shape the Future.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) represents an effective intervention for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). One priority of this research field is the clarification of ECT response mechanisms and the identification of biomarkers predicting its outcomes. We propose an overview of the molecular studies on ECT, concerning its course and outcome prediction, including also animal studies on electroconvulsive seizures (ECS), an experimental analogue of ECT. Most of these investigations underlie biological systems related to major depressive disorder (MDD), such as the neurotrophic and inflammator

Identification of the Novel Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus Sequence Type 525 in Donkeys of Abruzzo Region, Italy.

Streptococcus equi sub. zooepidemicus (SEZ) is described as a commensal bacterium of several animal species, including humans. Growing evidence supports the potential role of SEZ in the onset and progression of severe clinical manifestations of diseases in horses and other animals. In the present communication, we describe the diagnostic procedure applied to characterize the streptococcal infections caused by a novel SEZ sequence type (ST525) in donkeys raised on a farm in Abruzzo, Italy. The diagnostic process began with anamnesis and anatomopathological analysis, which revealed a severe bact

First detection and characterization of Salmonella spp. in poultry and swine raised in backyard production systems in central Chile.

Little is known about Salmonella serovars circulating in backyard poultry and swine populations worldwide. Backyard production systems (BPS) that raise swine and/or poultry are distributed across Chile, but are more heavily concentrated in central Chile, where industrialized systems are in close contact with BPS. This study aims to detect and identify circulating Salmonella serovars in poultry and swine raised in BPS. Bacteriological Salmonella isolation was carried out for 1744 samples collected from 329 BPS in central Chile. Faecal samples were taken from swine, poultry, geese, ducks, turkey

Animal models for age-related osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a frequent age-related skeletal disorder, wielding an enormous influence on the quality of life of many women, but also men. Osteoporosis results from a shifted ratio between the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts resulting in an increased degradation of bone. This leads to a systemic impairment of bone mass and microarchitecture. Currently only a small number of patients with osteoporosis is treated adequately, making the disease an enormous economic burden. This implies the urgent need of developing new treatment strategies and application mechanisms. Therefo

[Dengue, rabies and measles in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era].

After the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts have gradually been focused on medical care, epidemiological surveillance, and preventive health programs. An example of this is the identification during 2023 by the Epidemiological Surveillance System [of Mexico] of the increase in dengue cases and the presence of serotype 3, as well as cases of measles (imported and related to importation) and, at the same time, cases of human rabies with transmission from pet animals. Mexico's health system has been characterized by achievements in vaccine-preventable pathologies, as well as the robust epidemiological s

A history of the traceability of animals and animal products.

The author presents a review of the history of traceability as applied to live animals and animal products from antiquity to the 19th Century. The evidence shows that livestock farmers, owners, and those in charge of animal production and health were concerned with traceability from a very early stage. With regard to live animals, individual identification by means of body markings has been practised for over 3,800 years (Code of Hammurabi). Branding with a red-hot iron, with or without a written record of animal characteristics, was employed in most ancient civilisations. This branding techni

Animal models of ventral body wall closure defects: a personal perspective on gastroschisis.

Malformations affecting the ventral body wall comprise one of the leading categories of human birth defects. Gastroschisis is a particularly important body wall closure defect as its incidence is rising worldwide. Although the occurrence of such defects is relatively common their molecular and cellular basis is very poorly understood. A robust animal model system to study the etiology of gastroschisis would be very useful, but several problems currently hamper the identification of such a model. A concerted effort is required to recognize, characterize, and classify ventral body wall defects i

Two-component signaling in the virulence of Staphylococcus aureus: a silkworm larvae-pathogenic agent infection model of virulence.

Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogenic bacterium that causes abscesses, pneumonia, endocarditis, and food poisoning. S. aureus is also one of the resident flora of the endotherm and colonizes the host by skillfully evading its defense mechanism. Identification of attenuated mutants of S. aureus in an animal infection model is useful for investigating its adaptability and pathogenesis. This chapter describes a staphylococcal two-component SA0614-SA0615 system, which was identified using a silkworm larvae infection model.

Toxic neuropathy--an overview.

The involvement of the nervous system in systemic intoxication offers diagnostic and investigative challenges to the occupational health team. Often early evidence of neurotoxicity is vague, of a highly subjective nature and may be complicated by the presence of neuropathies due to other causes such as diabetes mellitus or exposure to multiple neurotoxins such as lead and solvents. The variety of agents producing neurotoxicity is wide, including heavy metals, organophosphates, acrylamide and its analogs, industrial solvents, therapeutic agents and plant alkaloids. The identification of neuroto

Contact dermatitis: from pathomechanisms to immunotoxicology.

Contact allergens are small reactive chemicals. They cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) by activating the innate and adaptive immune system. Contact allergens are very peculiar because of their built-in autoadjuvanticity that allows them to trigger sterile inflammation following skin penetration. The innate inflammatory response involves the triggering of pattern recognition receptors either by direct chemical interaction with such receptors or by induction of endogenous activators. I discuss here the recent findings regarding prevalence and predisposition, the identification of innate im

A new laboratory radio frequency identification (RFID) system for behavioural tracking of marine organisms.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) devices are currently used to quantify several traits of animal behaviour with potential applications for the study of marine organisms. To date, behavioural studies with marine organisms are rare because of the technical difficulty of propagating radio waves within the saltwater medium. We present a novel RFID tracking system to study the burrowing behaviour of a valuable fishery resource, the Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus L.). The system consists of a network of six controllers, each handling a group of seven antennas. That network was placed below

Predictive Artificial Intelligence Models for Mycotoxin Surveillance and Mitigation in Poultry Production Systems.

Mycotoxins are widespread contaminants in animal feeds and continue to pose serious threats to animal welfare, production efficiency, food security, and sustainable economic growth worldwide. Chickens are highly susceptible to multiple mycotoxins, such as aflatoxins (AFLs), deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisins (FBs), zearalenone (ZEA), ochratoxin A (OTA), and T-2 toxin. Exposure to these toxins can damage intestinal integrity, compromise immune functions, impair nutrient absorption, and ultimately reduce production efficiency even at subclinical concentrations. Conventional mycotoxin detection met

Krabbe disease: One Hundred years from the bedside to the bench to the bedside.

This Review summarizes the progress in understanding the pathogenesis and treatment of Krabbe disease from the description of five patients in by Knud Krabbe until 2016. To determine the cause of this genetic disease, pathological and chemical analyses of tissues from the nervous systems of patients were performed. It was determined that these patients had a pathological feature known as globoid cell in the brain and that this consisted partially of galactosylceramide, a major sphingolipid component of myelin. The finding that these patients had a deficiency of galactocerebrosidase (GALC) acti

Identification and Experimental Validation of OS-Related Gene Sets Based on Integrated Analysis of Single-Cell and Bulk RNA Sequencing Data with Machine Learning in Patients with Sepsis.

Sepsis is a severe organ dysfunction syndrome caused by a dysregulated host response to infection, closely associated with poor prognosis. It disrupts the balance between oxidative and antioxidative systems, which may ultimately result in cellular dysfunction and death. However, the key regulatory genes involved in this process remain unclear and require further investigation. In this study, we analyzed a single-cell RNA sequencing dataset from the Single Cell Portal and an oxidative stress (OS) gene set from GeneCards. We employed multiple algorithms and correlation analysis to identify OS-re

Designing inhibitors of anthrax toxin.

INTRODUCTION: Present-day rational drug design approaches are based on exploiting unique features of the target biomolecules, small- or macromolecule drug candidates and physical forces that govern their interactions. The 2013 Nobel Prize in chemistry awarded 'for the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems' once again demonstrated the importance of the tailored drug discovery that reduces the role of the trial-and-error approach to a minimum. The intentional dissemination of Bacillus anthracis spores in 2001 via the so-called anthrax letters has led to increased efforts,

Adaptive gas supply system for membrane oxygenator using online model identification and control in normothermic machine perfusion.

OBJECTIVE: This work addresses a critical challenge in normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) : the precise and safe control of the oxygenator's gas supply. The objective is to develop a novel control framework that integrates real-time model identification with adaptive pressure control, aiming to dynamically regulate the partial pressure of oxygen in the blood while preventing critical failure modes like plasma leakage. METHODS: By analyzing the oxygenation process within the artificial lung membrane, we demonstrate that the gas supply system's input-output behavior can be modeled using a dis
