Saccadic eye movements shift the fovea between objects of interest to build a visual percept. In humans, saccades are predominantly executed along the cardinal axes, particularly in the horizontal direction. It is unknown how this horizontal saccade bias could arise mechanistically, though previous work suggests contributions from neural, image-based, and ocular motor factors. Here we used two publicly available eye movement datasets to first investigate which image features-spatial frequency, saliency, and structural content-relate to the horizontal saccade bias. Among the three image feature

It is important to understand the development of meridional anisotropies in neurotypical children since those with poor visual development, such as amblyopia, can have different patterns of meridional anisotropies. While the oblique effect is usually observed in adults, neurotypical children who have normal 20/20 visual acuity tend to demonstrate a horizontal effect electrophysiologically. In this longitudinal study, orientation-specific visual evoked potentials (osVEPs) and psychophysical grating acuity were used to investigate the changes in the meridional anisotropies in children aged 3.8 t

BACKGROUD: Neurological disorders are common in preterm (PT) born individuals. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) effectively detect microstructural white matter (WM) abnormalities in the brain. We conducted this systematic review to integrate the findings of TBSS studies to determine the most consistent WM alterations in PT born individuals.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Science Direct were searched. DTI studies using TBSS in PT born individuals were screened up to October 2022. The systematic review included studies reporting alt

Silicon-mediated fluoride abstraction is demonstrated as a means of generating the first fluorido-cyanido transition metal complexes. This new synthetic approach is exemplified by the synthesis and characterization of the heteroleptic complexes, trans-[MIV F4 (CN)2 ]2- (M=Re, Os), obtained from their homoleptic [MIV F6 ]2- parents. As shown by combined high-field electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetization measurements, the partial substitution of fluoride by cyanide ligands leads to a marked increase in the magnetic anisotropy of trans-[ReF4 (CN)2 ]2- as compared to [ReF6 ]

PURPOSE: This study assessed whether optic radiations (OR) microstructure after temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery correlated with visual field defects (VFD).
METHODS: Patients were subjected to diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography of the OR and Humphrey perimetry after TLE surgery. We used Spearman's test to verify correlations between tractographic parameters and perimetry mean deviation. Tractographic variables were compared between patients with VFD or intact perimetry. Multiple logistic regression was applied between DTI and perimetry values. DTI sensitivity and specificity were

The aim of this study was to quantify the effects of selected inhomogeneities and anisotropies on computed electric potential fields associated with the electrocardiographic forward problem. The model construction was based on the Utah Torso model and included geometry for major anatomical structures such as subcutaneous fat, skeletal muscle, and lungs, as well as for epicardial fatpads, major arteries and veins, and the sternum, ribs, spine, and clavicles. Measured epicardial potentials served as the electrical source for solutions to the electrocardiographic forward problems computed using t

The large-scale commercial deployment of autonomous electric vehicles requires automated charging solutions. Inductive charging provides an alternative but faces efficiency, power density, and thermal stability challenges associated with ferrite-based systems. Here, we report an inductive charging system utilizing Fe-based nanocrystalline alloys, developed through combined material and system-level optimization. While conventional approaches often target maximum permeability, our analysis indicates that moderate permeability aligns more effectively with system requirements. Through stress-anne

OBJECTIVE: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography of the physeal-metaphyseal complex (PMC) provides insights into skeletal maturation. Fractional anisotropy (FA) minimal and maximal thresholds of 0.15 and 1.0, respectively, are commonly used to reconstruct tracts; these values were developed for highly organized tissues and may exclude the less organized hypertrophic and transitional zones that drive growth. Whether lowering the FA thresholds better captures growth-sensitive features and correlates with annualized height velocity is unknown.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-five healthy adole

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop and validate a quantitative, depth-resolved anisotropy imaging framework that extends ARFI-based focal degree-of-anisotropy (DoA) estimation into two-dimensional mapping by modeling the depth-dependent relationship between shear modulus ratio (SMR) and peak displacement ratio (PDR).
METHODS: We propose APRIL (Adaptive Polynomial Regression for anisotropy Imaging via ARFI-induced DispLacements), a framework for quantitative, depth-resolved DoA imaging that adaptively selects polynomial regression or shape-preserving spline interpolation based on excitation

Mechanical instabilities produce periodic out-of-plane deformations, but applications remain limited by the need for elastic substrates and weak controllability. Here, we induce coherent, instability-driven buckling in both van der Waals (vdW) layers and underlying amorphous silica at room temperature, achieving precise spatial control and deterministic orientation. Electron-beam builds crystal-axis-dependent stress in α-MoO3, while simultaneously facilitating viscous flow in silica, producing sinusoidal wrinkles at subwavelength whose dimension are tunable by α-MoO3 thickness and electron dos

Many patients with neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), suffer from apathy, which manifests as a lack of emotion, interest, and motivation. Therefore, research on the relationship between apathy and brain structure in patients with the disease is accumulating. However, the relationship between the tendency for apathy and brain structure in healthy people has hardly been clarified. Since changes in the brain's microstructure can occur even in individuals before they develop a specific disease, it is

Recent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements have revealed proton spin-spin relaxation anisotropy in only one component of the celery stalk, even though water accounts for up to 95% of its weight and is present throughout all its tissues. Our analysis shows that this anisotropy arises from nanoconfined water within the collenchyma cell walls. In these regions, restricted molecular motion and hydrogen bonding between water molecules and cell-wall constituents give rise to residual anisotropic dipolar interactions. In contrast, water in the xylem, phloem, and parenchyma occupies larger c

Real-time monitoring provides valuable information for optimizing fiber spinning conditions. This work combines two self-developed devices, a monofilament dry-jet wet spinning system and an optical measuring device. The measuring protocol was validated and applied to capture the evolution of cellulose fibers during the Ioncell® process. Seven representative points were chosen to evaluate changes in diameter, birefringence and the mass transfer between the filament and the coagulation bath. When exiting the spinneret, the filament shows die swell in the air gap where axial strain induces polyme

Bone architecture, including local bone volume fraction and fabric anisotropy, is optimised to resist forces and moments induced by long-term average loading patterns. Finite element (FE)-based inverse bone remodelling allows to estimate a habitual load case using high-resolution computed tomography images. Homogenised FE models use less computational resources than micro-FE approaches but have so far been limited to density-based remodelling. This study aims to include fabric anisotropy in homogenised inverse bone remodelling algorithms for the estimation of long-term habitual loading conditi

The sclera, the eye's primary load-bearing tissue, substantially influences the globe's response to intraocular pressure. Although the mechanical properties of the anterior and posterior segments have been extensively studied, the equatorial sclera's properties remain underexplored, limiting our understanding of ocular conditions like myopia, ocular trauma, and glaucoma. Traditional studies that rely solely on fiber orientation to explain scleral mechanics may overlook the tissue's complex biomechanical behavior. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive investigation using ultrasonic

Antiferromagnetic materials have emerged as promising platforms for magnonic devices with lower power consumption and faster operation speed. The antiferromagnet/ferromagnet with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is an essential heterostructure for realizing vertically polarized magnon excitation, detection, and modulation. However, it is still a significant challenge to advance this innovation. We have successfully fabricated two-dimensional antiferromagnet TMPS3 (MnPS3 and NiPS3)/Co40Fe40B20 ferromagnet heterostructures with robust perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We experimentally observe

We report a detailed study on the composition (x) dependence of structural, electronic, magnetic, and optical studies of nickel chromate spinel (NiCr2O4) at various levels of Mn substitution at B sites. No significant structural distortion from cubic symmetryFd-3m was noticed for all the compositions in the range 0 ⩽x⩽ 1 of Ni(Cr1-xMnx)2O4. However, there is significant alteration in the bond angles∠B-O-B (90.51°-93.86°) and∠A-O-B (122.48°-124.90°) (both of which follow completely opposite trend with increasingx) and bond lengths A-O (1.82-1.94 Å) and B-O (2.02-2.08 Å). BACKGROUND: Quantitative maps obtained with diffusion weighted (DW) imaging, such as fractional anisotropy (FA) -calculated by fitting the diffusion tensor (DT) model to the data,-are very useful to study neurological diseases. To fit this map accurately, acquisition times of the order of several minutes are needed because many noncollinear DW volumes must be acquired to reduce directional biases. Deep learning (DL) can be used to reduce acquisition times by reducing the number of DW volumes. We already developed a DL network named "one-minute FA," which uses 10 DW volumes to obtain FA maps, m

PURPOSE: Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) quantitatively estimates brain microstructure, diffusion tractography being one clinically utilized framework. To advance such dMRI approaches, direct quantitative comparisons between microscale anisotropy and orientation are imperative. Complete backscattering Mueller matrix polarized light imaging (PLI) enables the imaging of thin and thick tissue specimens to acquire numerous optical metrics not possible through conventional transmission PLI methods. By comparing complete PLI to dMRI within the ferret optic chiasm (OC), we may investigate

Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductors have been paid much attention due to the potential applications in spintronics. Here, the electronic and magnetic properties of 2D Janus Ni-trihalide monolayer Ni2X3Y3 (X, Y = I, Br, Cl; X ≠ Y) are investigated by first-principle calculations. The properties of Ni2X3Y3 (X, Y = I, Br, Cl; X ≠ Y) monolayers are compared by selecting the NiCl3 monolayer as the reference material. Ni2X3Y3 monolayers have two distinct magnetic ground states of ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM). In the Ni2X3Y3 monolayer, two different orbital splits
