The autonomic nervous system in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism.

The autonomic nervous system is a crucial mediator between the central nervous system and peripheral tissues and is essential for maintaining homeostasis. In this Review, we discuss the bidirectional communication between the autonomic nervous system and metabolic tissues in humans, focusing on the coordination of systemic glucose and lipid metabolism through autonomic signalling across changing physiological states. We also discuss the crosstalk between autonomic and immune pathways and its relevance for metabolic control. An overview of current methodologies to assess autonomic function in h

The autonomic nervous system: A potential link to the efficacy of acupuncture.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a diffuse network that regulates physiological systems to maintain body homeostasis by integrating inputs from the internal and external environment, including the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric nervous systems (ENS). Recent evidence suggests that ANS is one of the key neural pathways for acupuncture signal transduction, which has attracted worldwide attention in the acupuncture field. Here, we reviewed the basic and clinical research published in PubMed over the past 20 years on the effects of acupuncture on ANS regulation and homeostasis maint

GERD and obesity: is the autonomic nervous system the missing link?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common chronic condition that not only impairs the quality of life of those who are affected by it but also poses a significant economic burden. It encompasses a wide spectrum of symptoms as a result of gastric content moving into the esophagus. The most common cause of GERD, other than a hiatus hernia, is considered to be transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) normally has a higher resting tone than the stomach, thus preventing the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. The greater prevalence of

The effect of microgravity on the autonomic nervous system of rhesus monkeys.

Gastric myoelectric activity and respiratory sinus arrhythmia of two monkeys flown on Bion 11 were investigated. During flight, vagal effects on cardiac and gastric function of the two animals varied differently: in one animal they decreased at an early flight stage and returned to the control level by the end of flight, whereas in the second monkey the trend was the opposite. The decrease was accompanied by space motion sickness symptoms.

Involvement of the autonomic nervous system in the pathophysiology of Rett syndrome.

Clinical observations and physiological evidence suggest involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in Rett syndrome (RS). We studied sympathetic skin response (SSR) and sleep-wakefulness-rhythm (SWR) in patients with RS and discussed involvement of the ANS in reference to the pathophysiology. The age dependent alteration in the parameters in SSR was suggested. Some patients showed absence of SSR and some showed asymmetric involvement of the parameters of the SSR, which suggested involvement of the ANS at a peripheral level and possible influences from higher centers. The asymmetry corr

[The function of the autonomic nervous system in women with androgenetic alopecia].

Essential shifts in the autonomic nervous system, detectable by clinical methods and during a dynamic examination (of the autonomic reactivity and autonomic activity provision) were revealed in women suffering from androgenetic alopecia. The status of the autonomic nervous system was analyzed with consideration for the effects of psychogenic factors and the type of hair loss. The findings will help develop approaches to treatment of the condition.

Role of autonomic nervous system in the pathogenesis of angina pectoris.

The attacks of vasospastic angina or coronary spasm can be induced by injection of epinephrine, cold pressor test, Valsalva maneuver, and exercise. The attacks induced by these procedures can be suppressed by injection of phentolamine, an alpha adrenergic blocking agent in 80 per cent of the patients. On the other hand, propranolol, a beta adrenergic blocking agent, is not only ineffective in suppressing the attacks but aggravates the attacks in 50 per cent of the patients. Thus, alpha adrenergic receptors seem to play an important role in the production of vasospastic angina. The attacks of v

Effects of ketamine on the peripheral autonomic nervous system of the rat.

The effects of ketamine (2-(o-chlorophenyl) 2-methylaminocyclohexanone) (2-50 mg/kg) on the responses of the pithed rat arterial pressure, anococcygeus muscle and colon to selective stimulation of the spinal autonomic outflows were examined. Ketamine depressed the vasopressor response produced by stimulation of the lumbar sympathetic outflow in a dose-dependent manner but did not significantly affect the pressor response to intravenous noradrenaline (NA) administration. Ketamine depressed the motor responses of the anococcygeus to stimulation of the pre-ganglionic lumbar sympathetic outflow or

The role of the autonomic nervous system in polycystic ovary syndrome.

This article reviewed the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is the most common reproductive endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age. Its primary characteristics include persistent anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovarian morphology, often accompanied by disturbances in glucose and lipid metabolism. The body's functions are regulated by the autonomic nervous system, which consists mainly of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The autonomic nervous system helps maintain homeosta

The Role of the Autonomic Nervous System in Headache: Biomarkers and Treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review, the role of the autonomic nervous system in tension-type headache and migraine is reviewed. RECENT FINDINGS: A pathophysiological model for tension-type headache is proposed that is compatible with most physiological and behavioral literature. A treatment protocol is described that follows from this model. For migraine, incorporating autonomic factors into the pathophysiology offers rationales for behavioral interventions that have been shown to be useful in migraine treatment and a biofeedback protocol is proposed.

[A role of the autonomic nervous system in cerebro-cardiac disorders].

The authors consider anatomical/physiological characteristics and a role of different autonomic CNS regions, including insula cortex, amygdala complex, anterior cingulate cortex, ventral medial prefrontal cortex, hypothalamus and epiphysis, involved in the regulation of cardiovascular activity. The damage of these structures, e.g., due to the acute disturbance of cerebral blood circulation, led to arrhythmia, including fatal arrhythmia, in previously intact myocardium; systolic and diastolic dysfunction, ischemic changes considered in the frames of cerebro-cardial syndrome. Overview of the Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology of the Autonomic Nervous System.

Comprised of the sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, and enteric nervous system, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) provides the neural control of all parts of the body except for skeletal muscles. The ANS has the major responsibility to ensure that the physiological integrity of cells, tissues, and organs throughout the entire body is maintained (homeostasis) in the face of perturbations exerted by both the external and internal environments. Many commonly prescribed drugs, over-the-counter drugs, toxins, and toxicants function by altering transmission within the ANS.

Autonomous requirements of the Menkes disease protein in the nervous system.

Menkes disease is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder arising from a systemic copper deficiency caused by loss-of-function mutations in a ubiquitously expressed copper transporter, ATP7A. Although this disorder reveals an essential role for copper in the developing human nervous system, the role of ATP7A in the pathogenesis of signs and symptoms in affected patients, including severe mental retardation, ataxia, and excitotoxic seizures, remains unknown. To directly examine the role of ATP7A within the central nervous system, we generated Atp7a(Nes) mice, in which the Atp7a gene was specifically

Toxocara encephalitis presenting with autonomous nervous system involvement.

Human toxocariasis has been reported to cause a broad spectrum of neurological syndromes, including encephalitis, meningitis and meningo-radiculitis. Nevertheless, cerebral infection by Toxocara may go undiagnosed due to its rarity, elusive symptoms and lack of availability of appropriate testing. We report the case of a 54-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain and paralytic ileus approximately 3 weeks after having eaten raw snails (a folk remedy for peptic ulcer). Three weeks later, marked eosinophilia ensued, associated with mental clouding, nystagmus, diplopia, peripheral limbs ata

Autonomous nervous system activity in women with detrusor overactivity.

PURPOSE: To identify autonomic dysfunction among patients with urinary incontinence (UI) with or without detrusor overactivity (DO), we measured and compared heart rate variability (HRV) in these groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied HRV in 12 female UI patients with DO (mean age, 57.3+/-11.0 years) and 53 female UI patients without DO (mean age, 56.8+/-9.8 years). HRV parameters were measured by SA-3000P(R). Heart rates, the time domain index, and the frequency domain index were compared. To compare time domain indexes, we used the standard deviation of the N-N interval (SDNN), the squar

Participation of autonomic nervous system in the pathogenesis of Chagas disease.

Evidences accumulated over the last decade give adequate proof for the existence of circulating antibodies in Chagas disease which binds to beta adrenergic and muscarinic cholinergic receptor of lymphocytes and myocardium. The interaction of the antibodies with lymphocytes and cardiac neurotransmitter receptors behaving as an agonist, triggers in the cells intracellular signal transductions that alter the physiological behaviour of this cells. These events converted the cells in pathologically active cells. Thus, antibodies activating beta adrenergic receptors of T helper (Th) lymphocytes incr
