Iron oxide-mediated enhancement of extracellular electron transfer and symbiosis in consortium of electroactive bacteria and microalgae for wastewater treatment.

This study explores the role of α-Fe₂O₃ in improving extracellular electron transfer (EET) and symbiotic interactions between electroactive Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, its gene-deficient mutants (ΔmtrC, ΔomcA, and ΔcymA), and microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris). The iron oxide facilitates the efficient transfer of electrons generated by MR-1 to microalgal photosystem via the pathway of CymA-MtrC-OmcA to α-Fe₂O₃. This process enhances the removals of TOC, TN, and NH₄⁺-N in the MR-1 bacterial-algal consortium by 9.99%, 12.32%, and 52.25% respectively via OmcA regulation while boosting phosphorus rem

Optimized microbial fuel cell-powered electro-Fenton processes to enhance electricity and bisphenol A removal by varying external resistance and electrolyte concentrations.

This study is the first to investigate the effects of external resistance and electrolyte concentration on the performance of a bioelectro-Fenton (BEF) system, involving measurements of power density, H2O2 generation, and bisphenol A (BPA) removal efficiency. With optimized operating conditions (external resistance of 1.12 kΩ and cathodic NaCl concentration of 1,657 mg/L), the BEF system achieved a maximum power density of 38.59 mW/m2, which is about 3.5 times higher than with 1 kΩ external resistance and no NaCl. This system featured a 71.7 % reduction in total internal resistance. The optimi

Chitosan-derived biochars obtained at low pyrolysis temperatures for potential application in electrochemical energy storage devices.

N-rich biochars were obtained via pyrolysis treatment of chitosan (a low-cost biopolymer from natural biomasses) at mild conditions (in the 284 °C-540 °C range), thus offering an energy efficient and low carbon footprint synthesis. These low surface area N-doped biochars were morphologically and physicochemically characterized, and tested as hosting material in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Sulfur/biochars cathodes thus obtained showed good capacity retention and improved Coulombic efficiency compared to a standard N-rich high surface area carbon and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) ref

Integrated self-powered microchip biosensor for endogenous biological cyanide.

In this work we developed a fully integrated biofuel cell on a microchip, which consisted of glucose dehydrogenase supported (carbon nanotubes/thionine/gold nanoparticles)(8) multilayer as the anode, and the (carbon nanotubes/polylysine/laccase)(15) multilayer as the cathode. The as-obtained biofuel cell produced open circuit potential 620 mV and power density 302 microW cm(-2), showing great potential as a small power resource of portable electronics. Most importantly, for the first time we demonstrated the feasibility of developing a self-powered biosensor based on the inhibitive effect on m

Sustained skeletal muscle power for cardiac assist devices: implications of metabolic constraints.

A device to harness power from skeletal muscle contracting in a linear configuration is under development. This application requires a sustained level of power that is dependent upon muscle mechanics and metabolic properties. A biomechanical muscle model and a metabolic model constructed from experimental data were used to predict maximum power available in a sustainable region of loading and stimulation conditions. Latissimus dorsi (LD) of four goats were evaluated in vivo after a 10 week in situ conditioning protocol with an implanted Telectronics myostimulator. The LD insertion was reconnec

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling reprograms extracellular electron transfer of Shewanella oneidensis.

Limited extracellular electron transfer (EET) efficiency constrains the electrocatalytic performance of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Although the c-type cytochrome (c-Cyts) network is essential for EET, its regulatory mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study systematically compared the effects of overexpressing c-Cyts components versus cAMP receptor protein (CRP) modulation on EET efficiency in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Overexpression of individual c-Cyts failed to enhance EET. In contrast, coexpression of CymA, CctA, and MtrCBA (strain CC-Mtr) increased the maximum power densit

Microbial fuel cell (MFC)-based biosensor for real-time detection of heavy metals and BTEX contaminants in water.

This study evaluates a mixed-culture microbial fuel cell (MFC) as a rapid, real-time biosensor for detecting water toxicity caused by heavy metals and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) compounds. A dual-chamber MFC (200 mL) equipped with carbon fiber electrodes was operated with an electroactive biofilm on the anode, and toxicity responses were quantified using inhibition ratios (IR) derived from voltage suppression following contaminant exposure. The biosensor effectively detected copper (Cu2+) and mercury (Hg2+) over a concentration range of 2-20 mg L-1, exhibiting strong lin

Simultaneous removal of chlorobenzene and Cr(VI) from groundwater using microbial fuel cell with low-cost Si modified ferrihydrite electrodes.

Aromatic chlorinated compounds and Cr(VI) in groundwater pose significant challenges due to their resistance. This study explores microbial fuel cells using low-cost Si-modified ferrihydrite (SiFh) electrodes for simultaneous chlorobenzene and Cr(VI) removal. The voltage output of MFC assembled with SiFh modified electrode was approximately 1.63 times higher than the bare electrode, achieving 1.23 times higher in chlorobenzene degradation efficiency. CF-SiFh loaded MFC had the highest power generation and best EET efficiency, which was positive to greatest and fastest chlorobenzene removal. Mi

Photosynthetic microbial fuel cells for methanol treatment using graphene electrodes.

Photosynthetic microbial fuel cells (pMFC) represent a promising approach for treating methanol (CH3OH) wastewater. However, their use is constrained by a lack of knowledge on the extracellular electron transfer capabilities of photosynthetic methylotrophs, especially when coupled with metal electrodes. This study assessed the CH3OH oxidation capabilities of Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.1 in two-compartment pMFCs. A 3D nickel (Ni) foam modified with plasma-grown graphene (Gr) was used as an anode, nitrate mineral salts media (NMS) supplemented with 0.1% CH3OH as anolyte, carbon brush as cathode

Tuning the Potential of Electron Extraction from Microbes with Ferrocene-Containing Conjugated Oligoelectrolytes.

Synthetic systems that facilitate electron transport across cellular membranes are of interest in bio-electrochemical technologies such as bio-electrosynthesis, waste water remediation, and microbial fuel cells. The design of second generation redox-active conjugated oligoelectrolytes (COEs) bearing terminal cationic groups and a π-delocalized core capped by two ferrocene units is reported. The two COEs, DVFBO and F4 -DVFBO, have similar membrane affinity, but fluorination of the core results in a higher oxidation potential (422 ± 5 mV compared to 365 ± 4 mV vs Ag/AgCl for the neutral precurso

Effect of external resistance on the sensitivity of microbial fuel cell biosensor for detection of different types of pollutants.

The relatively poor sensitivity is the main bottleneck restricting the application of microbial fuel cell biosensor (MFC-biosensor) for toxicity monitoring. Previous studies have shown that external resistance (Rext) had an obvious effect on sensor sensitivity. However, these studies reported different results and the reason of this discrepancy was not clear. The objective of this research was to observe the effect of Rext on sensor sensitivity when detecting different types of pollutants and reveal its microbiological mechanism. Results demonstrated that the optimal Rext of MFC-biosensor vari

Accelerated Wound Healing on Skin by Electrical Stimulation with a Bioelectric Plaster.

Wound healing on skin involves cell migration and proliferation in response to endogenous electric current. External electrical stimulation by electrical equipment is used to promote these biological processes for the treatment of chronic wounds and ulcers. Miniaturization of the electrical stimulation device for wound healing on skin will make this technology more widely available. Using flexible enzymatic electrodes and stretchable hydrogel, a stretchable bioelectric plaster is fabricated with a built-in enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC) that fits to skin and generates ionic current along the su

Reducing NOx emissions from a biodiesel-fueled engine by use of low-temperature combustion.

Biodiesel is popularly discussed in many countries due to increased environmental awareness and the limited supply of petroleum. One of the main factors impacting general replacement of diesel by biodiesel is NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions. Previous studies have shown higher NOx emissions relative to petroleum diesel in traditional direct-injection (DI) diesel engines. In this study, effects of injection timing and different biodiesel blends are studied for low load [2 bar IMEP (indicated mean effective pressure)] conditions. The results show that maximum heat release rate can be reduced by r

Evaluation of sulfate resistance of cement mortars containing black rice husk ash.

In this paper, black rice husk ashes (BRHAs), which are agrowastes from an electricity generating power plant and a rice mill, were ground and used as a partial cement replacement. The durability of mortars under sulfate attack including expansion and compressive strength loss were investigated. For parametric study, BRHA were used as a Portland cement Type 1 replacement at the levels of 0%, 10%, 30%, and 50% by weight of binder. The water-to-binder ratios were 0.55 and 0.65. For the durability of mortar exposed to sulfate attack, 5% sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) soluti

Tunable biomimetic chalcogels with Fe4S4 cores and [Sn(n)S(2n+2)](4-)(n = 1, 2, 4) building blocks for solar fuel catalysis.

Biology sustains itself by converting solar energy in a series of reactions between light harvesting components, electron transfer pathways, and redox-active centers. As an artificial system mimicking such solar energy conversion, porous chalcogenide aerogels (chalcogels) encompass the above components into a common architecture. We present here the ability to tune the redox properties of chalcogel frameworks containing biological Fe(4)S(4) clusters. We have investigated the effects of [Sn(n)S(2n+2)](4-) linking blocks ([SnS(4)](4-), [Sn(2)S(6)](4-), [Sn(4)S(10)](4-)) on the electrochemical an
