Urgent request on avian influenza.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N8 is currently causing an epizootic in Europe, infecting many poultry holdings as well as captive and wild bird species in more than 10 countries. Given the clear clinical manifestation, passive surveillance is considered the most effective means of detecting infected wild and domestic birds. Testing samples from new species and non-previously reported areas is key to determine the geographic spread of HPAIV H5N8 2016 in wild birds. Testing limited numbers of dead wild birds in previously reported areas is useful when it is relevant to know whether t

'A flying start': Wildlife trypanosomes in tissues of Australian tabanids (Diptera: Tabanidae).

Tabanids (syn. horse flies) are biting-flies of medical and veterinary significance because of their ability to transmit a range of pathogens including trypanosomes - some species of which carry a combined health and biosecurity risk. Invertebrate vectors responsible for transmitting species of Trypanosoma between Australian wildlife remains unknown, thus establishing the role of potential vector candidates such as tabanids is of utmost importance. The current study aimed to investigate the presence of indigenous trypanosomes in tabanids from an endemic area of south-west Australia. A total of

African Swine Fever (ASF): A Study to Identify Risk Factors Associated with the Introduction of the Disease into Pig Farms.

In 2023, ASF was recognized in Lombardy in wild boars, but shortly thereafter the disease was also identified in pig farms, with serious economic repercussions for the entire national pig sector. To identify factors related to the introduction of the infection into pig farms, a case-control study was conducted with the aim of gaining knowledge on the risk and protective factors involved in the introduction of the ASF virus into intensive pig farms. To this end, a questionnaire was developed on risk factors related to ASFV transmission into pig farms and on good management and biosecurity pract

Transformation and Sustainable Development of China's Pig Industry in the Post-African Swine Fever Era: A One Health Perspective.

The 2018 African swine fever (ASF) outbreak disrupted China's pig industry but spurred transformations in production, organisation, and governance. Using the One Health framework, this study examines post-ASF dynamics across animal health, environmental sustainability, public health, and economic sustainability. The findings indicate the following: (1) Policy, investment, biosecurity, and digital tech enabled rapid production recovery, yet the growth rate of production has significantly outpaced that of consumption, raising periodic overcapacity risks. (2) The shift from farrow-to-finish to sp

Associations between antimicrobial use and the faecal resistome on broiler farms from nine European countries.

OBJECTIVES: To determine associations between farm- and flock-level antimicrobial usage (AMU), farm biosecurity status and the abundance of faecal antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) on broiler farms. METHODS: In the cross-sectional pan-European EFFORT study, conventional broiler farms were visited and faeces, AMU information and biosecurity records were collected. The resistomes of pooled faecal samples were determined by metagenomic analysis for 176 farms. A meta-analysis approach was used to relate total and class-specific ARGs (expressed as fragments per kb reference per million bacteri

[Safe from biothreats? Legislation protects you and society].

The 9/11 terror attacks, followed by mailing of letters containing anthrax spores, changed our comprehension on threats towards modern society. Finland is committed by international treaties to develop biosafety and biosecurity legislation, and general awareness of the legislation. However, the rapidly developing field of biosciences cannot be extensively regulated by legislation. Awareness of the risks and challenges involved in handling of biological agents is an important tool in threat prevention. Despite active efforts to update the legislation by government authorities, currently the sus

Cross-Sectional Serosurvey and Risk Factors Associated with the Presence of Toxoplasma gondii Antibodies in Pigs in Greece.

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide reported zoonotic infection caused by the protozoon Toxoplasma gondii. Pigs may become infected by ingesting feed or water contaminated with cat faeces, by cannibalism, and/or by eating infected rodents. T. gondii infected edible tissues of pigs are a source of infection for humans. This study was undertaken to detect seropositivity of pigs against T. gondii and identify possible risk factors as well as to compare two serological methods. METHODS: A total of 609 blood samples were collected from 10% of the sows from 65 pig farms located in mainland G

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in poultry kept under different housing conditions in Israel.

A Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence survey was conducted in poultry flocks kept under different housing systems in Israel. The seroprevalence rates were 35.4% (46/130) in battery-raised chicken egg-layers from Jerusalem which were first raised on the ground, 12.5% (19/152) in free-range chickens from various locations of the country and 9% (4/45) in turkeys from the north. However, all broilers (50) and chicken breeding stock (58) kept under high biosecurity conditions in Jerusalem were found to be T. gondii seronegative. It is concluded that high biosecurity conditions prevent contamination wi

A clinical, evidence-based approach to infectious causes of infertility in beef cattle.

Infertility is the diminished or absent capacity to produce viable offspring. Infections that reduce ovulation rates, fertilization rates, embryonic survival rates, fetal survival rates or perinatal survival rates result in observed infertility in beef cows. Reproductive pathogens include Leptospira, Campylobacter, Hemophilus, Brucella, bovine herpesvirus-1, bovine viral diarrhea virus, Tritrichomonas foetus, and Neospora caninum. Infectious infertility can be prevented or controlled with appropriate surveillance, biosecurity, and/or vaccination. The objective of this review is to briefly summ

African swine fever in Nepal: risk factors, impacts, and strategies for control.

African swine fever (ASF) has emerged as a major threat to Nepal's pig farming sector since its first outbreak in March 2022. The disease has caused significant declines in both the pig population and pork production, severely affecting rural communities reliant on pig farming for their livelihoods. ASF's spread is facilitated by key risk factors, including swill feeding, informal cross-border trade, and poor on-farm biosecurity measures. Additionally, seasonal trends, particularly during the monsoon, exacerbate the spread of the disease, especially in areas with high pig density. Control effo

Swine Influenza Virus Introduction in Pig Farms: A Semi-Quantitative Risk Assessment in Northern Italy.

Swine influenza is a viral zoonotic respiratory disease of pigs threatening both animal and human health due to its pandemic potential. We conducted a semi-quantitative risk assessment to classify 22 commercial pig farms in northern Italy in terms of the likelihood of introduction of influenza, evaluating their biosecurity systems and geographical locations. We used a modified Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) to calculate Risk Priority Codes (RPCs), indicating increasing risk levels (from 1 to 5) for six biosecurity criteria: (A) personnel, (B) animal management, (C) shelter management,

The Threat of Synthetic Smallpox: European Perspectives.

This article explores how advances in synthetic biology, and the potential threat of deliberately recreating and spreading smallpox, are affecting the multilateral debate on the remaining variola virus stocks. It draws on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 10 high-profile, European-based experts in biosecurity and synthetic biology. Four overarching themes affecting the retention or destruction debate are discussed, relating to biosecurity, dangerous knowledge, accidental releases, and eradication. We conclude that while synthetic biology seems to affect all the main discourses in the v

Reducing Antimicrobial Usage in Pig Production without Jeopardizing Production Parameters.

Antimicrobial usage (AMU) has been described to be high in pig production. Although farmers are aware of the high usage, little is known about intervention to improve the situation. This study evaluated the extent to which AMU could be reduced in pig production by the optimization of herd management, biosecurity status, vaccination strategy, anthelmintic therapy and advice on prudent AMU. Furthermore, the effects of these interventions on the herd production results were explored. This intervention study was conducted on 61 Flemish pig herds and included three visits per herd. During the initi

UK flockdown: A survey of smallscale poultry keepers and their understanding of governmental guidance on highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The scale of the current outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) due to the A/H5N1 virus in the United Kingdom is unprecedented. In addition to its economic impact on the commercial poultry sector, the disease has devastated wild bird colonies and represents a potential public health concern on account of its zoonotic potential. Although the implementation of biosecurity measures is paramount to reducing the spread of HPAI in domestic and commercial settings, little is known about the attitudes and perspectives of backyard poultry keepers, who often keep their flocks in close prox

Barrier or breach? Assessing swine housing features for mosquito threats.

Effective mosquito control is critical in swine production to reduce disease transmission and prevent mechanical damage. However, current biosecurity measures on swine premises primarily target microbial pathogens, often overlooking the importance of excluding insects, particularly mosquitoes. While vector-borne disease transmission is the primary concern, mosquito infestations also contribute to mechanical damage, leading to secondary infections, stress-related production losses, and compromised animal welfare. Mitigation efforts aimed at mosquitoes can also have broader benefits by reducing

Profile of pig farms combining high performance and low antimicrobial usage within four European countries.

Pig farmers are strongly encouraged to reduce their antimicrobial usage because of the rising threat from antimicrobial resistance. However, such efforts should not compromise the herd health status and performance. This study aimed to describe the profile of so-called 'top-farms' that managed to combine both high technical performance and low antimicrobial usage. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 227 farrow-to-finish farms in Belgium, France, Germany and Sweden. Among them, 44 farms were allocated to the top-farms group and were compared with the 'regular' farms group in terms of fa
