Techniques for the measurement and monitoring of carbon dioxide in the blood.

The relationship between an elevated partial pressure of carbon dioxide (Pco2) and reduced alveolar ventilation resulting from respiratory failure primarily affecting the respiratory pump was first reported during the 1952 Copenhagen polio epidemic. Several methods for Pco2 estimation, such as blood gas analyses, capnography, and transcutaneous Pco2 measurements, have since been developed to assess alveolar ventilation. The clinical setting in which CO2 measurement is valuable includes acute and chronic respiratory failure, transport, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, patient-controlled analgesia

Determination of reference intervals and comparison of venous blood gas parameters using a standard and nonstandard collection method in 51 dogs.

The aim of this study was to determine reference intervals (RI) for venous blood parameters determined with the RAPIDPoint 500 (RP500) blood gas analyzer using blood gas syringes (BGS) and to determine whether immediate analysis of venous blood collected into lithium heparin (LH) tubes can replace anaerobic blood sampling into BGS. The null hypothesis was that canine venous blood samples collected in BGS and in LH tubes are comparable. Jugular blood was collected from 51 healthy dogs into a BGS and a LH tube. The BGS was immediately analyzed followed by the LH tube. The RI were calculated from

Effects of hyperbaric oxygen on intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow in experimental cerebral oedema.

Increased intracranial pressure was induced in anaesthetized dogs by application of liquid nitrogen to the dura mater. Intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow were measured, together with arterial blood pressure and arterial and cerebral venous blood gases.Carbon dioxide was administered intermittently to test the responsiveness of the cerebral circulation, and hyperbaric oxygen was delivered at intervals in a walk-in hyperbaric chamber, pressurized to two atmospheres absolute.Hyperbaric oxygen caused a 30% reduction of intracranial pressure and a 19% reduction of cerebral blood flow in

Improper arterial catheter blood sampling method affects hemoglobin test results: A cautionary tale.

Arterial catheter blood sampling is widely used among critically ill patients to minimize repeated punctures; however, improper techniques may lead to misleading laboratory results. This case report presents a clinically significant hemoglobin discrepancy observed between blood gas analyzer and automated hematology analyzer during arterial catheter sampling in a patient with cerebral infarction. After catheter placement, the interplatform hemoglobin discrepancy reached 13 g/L despite prior concordance. The discordance was attributed to pre-analytical errors, including inadequate discard volume

[Pulmonary edema of toxic origin. Hemodynamic data].

The inhalation of toxic gases or vapours is capable of resulting in pulmonary oedema (P.O.), the mechanism of which corresponds, on the basis of a number of hemodynamic studies carried out, to that which characterises the so-called "lesional" pulmonary oedema, which is different from so-called "hemodynamic" oedema. Classically PAP, PCP and P wedge pressure have virtually normal values (normalisation of pulmonary arterial hypertension by correction of hypoxemia). CI and SWILV are normal or increased and pulmonary resistances are virtually normal. The origin of the oedema is thus related to an i

[Effects of breathing high concentrations of oxygen on changes in blood indices during bicycle exercise].

The purpose of this study is to examine effects of hyperoxic gas mixtures on changes of blood indices during bicycle exercise of human. Oxygen-enriched gases (30% O2) were inspired during the ramp load exercise of 25 watt/min. Changes of blood indices were analyzed with Sequential Multiple Analyzer with the computer (SMAC). The improvement of exercise performance were discussed about relationship between function of hyperoxic gas and physiological mechanism. Three experimental conditions were set as follows (I) 30% O2 +N2 gases balance, (II) air (21% O2), and (III) 30% O2 +2% CO2 +N2 gases bal

Determination of acetaldehyde in human blood by a gas chromatographic method with negligible artefactual acetaldehyde formation.

A method is described for determination of acetaldehyde in blood by head space gas chromatography. The method utilizes sodium nitrite-sulfosalicylic acid as an inhibitor of the ethanol oxidizing systems by means of which the interference of ethanol is reduced considerably. The detection limit was 0.4 mumol/l, the recovery 101.5 +/- 5.2% and the coefficient of variation was 7.8% (1.5 mumol/1 acetaldehyde). There was no disappearance of acetaldehyde if the head space vials were kept at -20 degree C for 24 h. In the comparison study with the semicarbazide method our results were 0.7-4.1 mumol/l l

Multi-institution comparison of whole blood potassium hemolysis rates.

INTRODUCTION: Hemolysis causes falsely elevated potassium results and if undetected, can lead to misidentification of hypokalemia or hyperkalemia causing delayed or inappropriate treatment. The prevalence of hemolysis in whole blood samples submitted for potassium or blood gas analysis remains unknown due to historical limitations in blood gas analyzer hemolysis detection. This study aimed to compare hemolysis rates in whole blood potassium samples measured by blood gas analyzers at four different academic medical centers. Further, we compared rates among differing blood sources and hospital s

Interpretation of arterial blood gases by nurses.

Many clinical nurses find the concept of acid/base balance confusing. This article presents a step-by-step approach to arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis. In addition, the components of ABGs (pH, PCO2 and HCO3) are presented; metabolic and respiratory abnormalities (acidosis and alkalosis) are discussed in relation to cause and signs and symptoms; the concept of compensation is reviewed; the degrees of compensation are explained; the five steps of ABG analysis are outlined; and practice problems are provided and explained. By using this approach, the nurse can analyze the ABG values confidently

[Value of cavernous gasometry in the physiopathologic diagnosis and treatment of priapism].

Currently, each case of priapism therapy must be customized depending on the patient's individual pathophysiology. To this end, in addition to anamnesis and the macroscopic aspect of the suctioned blood, quantification of existing ischaemia by cavernous gasometry is quite important. This will make possible the distinction between two types of priapism: ischaemic, vein-occlusive or low-flow; and nonischaemic, arterial or high-flow. Each of these priapism types presents a clearly different mechanism of production and, more importantly, a different response to the various therapeutic options curr

Common Errors in Blood Gas Interpretation.

Blood gas analysis is prone to error due to physiologic changes that can occur in blood samples after collection, the volatile nature of gases, technology used in sample analysis and the potential for small changes to correlate to significant clinical differences. Common causes of erroneous results can be due to the manner of sample collection, inappropriate anticoagulation, sample storage options, delays in sample analysis, and measurement errors. Ionized calcium and ionized magnesium are directly chelated by heparin and are particularly sensitive to excessive anticoagulation with either liqu

Capillary versus arterial blood gases. Accuracy, acceptability, and suitability for use during sleep studies to calibrate transcutaneous carbon dioxide measurement.

PURPOSE: To determine whether capillary blood gas carbon dioxide values can substitute for arterial sampling to calibrate transcutaneous carbon dioxide during polysomnography. METHODS: Participants underwent capillary (arterialized earlobe) and blood gas (radial artery) sampling at polysomnography commencement (Evening) and end (Morning). Participant and scientist sample preference, and participant pain were recorded. The transcutaneous offset from the corresponding arterial/capillary sample, and the transcutaneous electrode drift over the night were determined. RESULTS: Seventy-five people
