Were there royal herds? Understanding herd management and mobility using isotopic characterizations of cattle tooth enamel from Early Dynastic Ur.

During the third millennium BC, Mesopotamia (the land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, in modern Iraq-Syria), was dominated by the world's earliest cities and states, which were ruled by powerful elites. Ur, in present-day southern Iraq, was one of the largest and most important of these cities, and irrigation-based agriculture and large herds of domesticated animals were the twin mainstays of the economy and diet. Texts suggest that the societies of the Mesopotamian city-states were extremely hierarchical and underpinned by institutionalised and heavily-managed farming systems. Prevai

Intestinal parasite infection in the Augustinian friars and general population of medieval Cambridge, UK.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate how lifestyle may have impacted the risk of contracting intestinal parasites in medieval England . Regular clergy (such as those living in monasteries) and the lay population form interesting groups for comparison as diet and lifestyle varied significantly. Monasteries were built with latrine blocks and hand washing facilities, unlike houses of the poor. MATERIALS: Sediment samples from the pelvis, along with control samples from feet and skull, of 19 burials of Augustinian Friars (13th-16th century), and 25 burials from All Saints by the Castle parish cemetery (10th

Influence of early life environment on later life mortality in catastrophic and non-catastrophic medieval skeletal series from Kutná Hora-Sedlec (Czech Republic, 13th-16th century).

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine whether the early life environment, broadly characterized by adult lower-limb long bone metrics, is related to later mortality under normal and catastrophic conditions. MATERIALS: The sample for the study was composed of adult human skeletal remains excavated from a medieval cemetery from the 13th to 16th century in Kutná Hora-Sedlec (Czech Republic) (n = 390) under catastrophic (n = 242) and non-catastrophic (n = 148) contexts. METHODS: We collected combined femoral-tibial lengths as a proxy for stature and vertical femoral head breadths as a proxy

Critically buried avalanche victims can develop severe hypothermia in less than 60 min.

BACKGROUND: A major challenge in the management of avalanche victims in cardiac arrest is differentiating hypothermic from non-hypothermic cardiac arrest, as management and prognosis differ. Duration of burial with a cutoff of 60 min is currently recommended by the resuscitation guidelines as a parameter to aid in this differentiation However, the fastest cooling rate under the snow reported so far is 9.4 °C per hour, suggesting that it would take 45 min to cool below 30 °C, which is the temperature threshold below which a hypothermic cardiac arrest can occur. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a

[Towards understanding the fauna of buried corpses].

Is to describe the occurrence of the Rhizophagus parallelocollis graveyard beetle in inhumated bodies in forensic practice and to evaluate the potential for establishing an accurate date of burial based on entomological analysis of the presence of Rh. parallelocollis in the remains. Numerous accumulations of graveyard beetle fragments were found in cadavers buried at a depth of 2.0-2.5 meters in the vicinity of Smolensk in 2013. The collected materials consisted mainly of individual body parts (pronotum, head, abdomen, and elytral). The highly developed sense of smell of these beetles allows t

Ancient DNA reveals monozygotic newborn twins from the Upper Palaeolithic.

The Upper Palaeolithic double burial of newborns and the single burial of a ca. 3-month-old infant uncovered at the Gravettian site of Krems-Wachtberg, Austria, are of paramount importance given the rarity of immature human remains from this time. Genome-wide ancient DNA shows that the male infants of the double grave are the earliest reported case of monozygotic twins, while the single grave´s individual was their 3rd-degree male relative. We assessed the individuals´ age at death by applying histological and µCT inspection of the maxillary second incisors (i2) in conjunction with C- and N-is

Detection of cocaine and metabolites from mouse femur buried in soil.

Drug addicts are frequently involved in committing homicides, and burial in the ground is often performed by offenders for body disposal. Therefore, toxicological analyses of buried bones are vitally important for investigating the cause and circumstance of death. Cocaine concentrations in heart blood, femoral muscle, and femur were measured in mice after injections of 5, 15, and 30 mg/kg cocaine and in femurs buried in soil. The concentrations of cocaine in femurs (253.67-1345.31 ng/g) were higher than those found in heart blood (3.14-28.73 ng/mL) and femoral muscle (76.41-429.76 ng/g). The c

Biomechanical evidence for occupational specialization in Mesolithic-Neolithic hunter-gatherers from Zvejnieki, Latvia.

Mesolithic cemeteries have greater dimensionality and scale that reflect emerging social complexity following the Upper Paleolithic. The Zvejnieki cemetery dates between the Middle Mesolithic and Late Neolithic, is associated with a persistent hunter-fisher-gatherer economy, and includes burials with pendants fashioned from mammal teeth. Stable isotopic analyses indicate dietary differences between individuals with pendants and without pendants beginning early in life. This context provides an opportunity to explore questions relating to occupational specialization using long bone cross-sectio

Piezophilic activity dominates the Puerto Rico Trench deep subseafloor biosphere.

Hydrostatic pressure is a defining feature of the deep ocean, yet how it structures microbial activity across the subseafloor biosphere is poorly understood. Here, we assess pressure effects on anabolic activity in seafloor and subseafloor communities across a margin-to-hadal-to-abyssal transect of the Puerto Rico Trench region (493-8,385 m water depth). Community-level responses to pressure reverse with burial, revealing a previously unrecognized shift toward piezophily in resident subseafloor communities down to 20 meters below seafloor (mbsf). In pressure-incubation experiments, atmospheric

Removal of an intraorbital electric cutter blade fragment by combined cerebral angiography and lateral orbitotomy for globe preservation.

Intraorbital foreign bodies (IOFBs) represent significant challenges in ocular trauma management, particularly when complete burial occurs. We present a male in his 50s who sustained a high-velocity ocular injury by a completely buried IOFB consisting of an electric cutter blade fragment. Despite wearing protective eyewear, the 34×11 mm fragment entered through the nasal root and became embedded in the frontal process of the zygomatic bone. Preoperative cerebral angiography confirmed the absence of ophthalmic artery injury. A lateral orbitotomy approach using Berke canthotomy and controlled os

Changes in Vickers hardness during the decomposition of bone: Possibilities for forensic anthropology.

The purpose of this study was to determine how the Vickers hardness (HV) of bone varies during soft tissue putrefaction. This has possible forensic applications, notably for determining the postmortem interval. Experimental porcine bone samples were decomposed in surface and burial deposition scenarios over a period of 6 months. Although the Vickers hardness varied widely, it was found that when transverse axial hardness was subtracted from longitudinal axial hardness, the difference showed correlations with three distinct phases of soft tissue putrefaction. The ratio of transverse axial hardn

Traditional Living Habits of the Taz Tundra Population: A Paleoparasitological Study.

An excavation of the Vesakoyakha II-IV and Nyamboyto I burial grounds was conducted during the 2014 field season, and soil samples from intact burials dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, respectively, were analyzed to determine interactions between parasites and host/vectors. Considering the discovery of Diphyllobothrium sp. and Taenia sp. eggs in soil samples from the pelvic region, diphyllobothriasis was the most frequent helminthic infection among the Taz Nenets. The Nyamboyto Nenets mainly consumed uncooked fish, while the Vesakoyakha Nenets had a bigger variety in food choices, inclu

Quantitative analysis of human remains from 18(th)-19(th) centuries using X-ray fluorescence techniques: The mysterious high content of mercury in hair.

In this work, we report the unusual concentration of mercury in the hair of an individual buried in the 18th to mid-19th centuries and the comparison with the elemental composition of other remains from the same individual. Two energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) setups, one with tri-axial geometry and the second one with micro-beam capabilities and a vacuum system, for light elements detection, have been used. Quantitative evaluation of the obtained spectra were made by fundamental parameters and winAXIL program by compare mode method. The levels of Hg in the hair of buried samples p

Assessment of ebola virus disease, health care infrastructure, and preparedness - four counties,Southeastern Liberia, august 2014.

Ebola virus disease (Ebola) is a multisystem disease caused by a virus of the genus Ebolavirus. In late March 2014, Ebola cases were described in Liberia, with epicenters in Lofa County and later in Montserrado County. While information about case burden and health care infrastructure was available for the two epicenters, little information was available about remote counties in southeastern Liberia. Over 9 days, August 6-14, 2014, Ebola case burden, health care infrastructure, and emergency preparedness were assessed in collaboration with the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in

Microbial life beyond the grave: 16S rRNA gene-based metagenomic analysis of bacteria diversity and their functional profiles in cemetery environments.

Recent studies have identified cemeteries as potential environmental reservoirs of multi-drug resistant pathogenic bacteria that could contaminate groundwater sources posing public health threats. However, these findings were based on the identification of culturable bacteria and at times not below burial grounds. Investigation on the bacterial diversity and functional profiles of bacterial communities above and below burial grounds in human cemeteries are few. The current study used high-throughput sequencing techniques to determine the bacterial composition and their associated functional pr

The importance of the nasopharynx and anterior skull base in excerebration techniques from KV40, a New Kingdom Egyptian site.

In ancient Egypt, a unique technique for removing the brain was invented as part of the mummification practice and refined over the centuries. This usually involved piercing the anterior skull base through a nasal passage to remove the brain remnants through that perforation. From 2010 to 2018, an interdisciplinary team of the Universities of Basel and Zurich investigated tomb no. 40 (KV40) in the Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Egypt. Archaeological findings indicate a first burial phase during the mid-18th Dynasty (ca. 1400-1350 BCE) and a second in the 22nd to 25th Dynasty (approx. 900-700 BCE)

Examination and identification of a Danish 17th-century nobleman, Laurids Ebbesen : A multidisciplinary study.

Skeletal remains from a crypt in Aarhus Cathedral, where an 87-year-old Danish nobleman, Laurids Ebbesen, was thought to have been buried in 1696 were examined by a multidisciplinary team of investigators. Examination of clothing revealed a burial cap, indicating that he had been a nobleman. Using transition analysis of various bones, the age was estimated at around 82 years (95% confidence interval: 70-92 years). The gender was male. The cranium showed an old, healed fracture in the left temporal region and there was arthritic damage of the vertebral column. In the chapel there were four stat
