Vengeful Vines: Cell Death and Neoplasm Formation in Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae, Piperales) in Response to Oviposition of Troidini (Papilionidae, Lepidoptera) Butterflies.

The ecological interactions of the iconic Troidini swallowtail butterflies and their host plants remain largely unknown, despite the popularity of these butterflies in collections and their significance as conservation flagships. We sought to elucidate the ecological interactions of perhaps the least known life-stage of the butterflies: that of the egg with its host plant. We recorded oviposition location and egg survival rates for Troides helena, Troides amphrysus and Pachliopta antiphus on their host plants Aristolochia acuminata and Aristolochia cf. foveolata through systematic monitoring o

Biases in butterfly survey effort and patterns of protocol used across biogeographic regions.

Butterflies are widely recognized as effective bioindicators due to their short life cycles, close associations with specific host plants, and rapid responses to environmental change. They are comparatively easier to identify than many other insect groups, making them valuable for biodiversity monitoring. Despite this, there is no consensus or standardized guidelines on butterfly monitoring protocols in many regions of the world. This lack of standardization can compromise data quality, limit comparability across studies, lead to inefficient use of resources, and ultimately weaken our capacity

Constraints on chromosome evolution revealed by the 229 chromosome pairs of the Atlas blue butterfly.

Chromosomal arrangements are important for processes including genetic recombination, adaptation, and speciation. Related taxa often possess similar numbers of chromosomes, but some groups show remarkable variation in chromosome numbers. Most Lepidoptera, the butterflies and moths, have 31 or 32 chromosomes, but some species deviate from this norm. We present a chromosome-level genome assembly of a heterogametic female Atlas blue butterfly (Polyommatus atlantica; Lycaenidae) and find that it has 227 pairs of autosomes and four sex chromosomes, the highest recorded chromosome number in non-poly

Pesticides detected in two urban areas have implications for local butterfly conservation.

Human-managed green spaces in urban landscapes have become important focal points for insect conservation, partly because of the desirable insect diversity that these areas support, and also because exposure to nature is important for human health and wellbeing. An important issue in insect conservation is the extent to which nonpest insects are impacted by pesticide applications, but this has been relatively less examined outside of agricultural landscapes. Here, we investigated green spaces, including parks and private yards, in two urban areas (Sacramento, California, and Albuquerque, New M

Bottom-up butterfly model with thorax-pitch control and wing-pitch flexibility.

The diversity in butterfly morphology has attracted many people around the world since ancient times. Despite morphological diversity, the wing and body kinematics of butterflies have several common features. In the present study, we constructed a bottom-up butterfly model, whose morphology and kinematics are simplified while preserving the important features of butterflies. The present bottom-up butterfly model is composed of two trapezoidal wings and a rod-shaped body with a thorax and abdomen. Its wings are flapped downward in the downstroke and backward in the upstroke by changing the geom

Giant Central Nervous System Aspergilloma Mimicking Butterfly Neoplasm of the Corpus Callosum.

Radiological presentation of central nervous system (CNS) aspergillosis is variable and depends on the immune status of the patients. Typical features of meningoencephalitis, infarction, abscess, and mycotic aneurysms commonly occur in immunocompromised patients. A rare mass-like or tumoral form of cerebral aspergillosis has been described mostly in immunocompetent patients which results in a diagnostic dilemma, thus potentially causing a delay in the management. We present a case of a large CNS aspergilloma mimicking an infiltrative callosal neoplasm in a young immunocompetent patient. Carefu

Anterolateral thigh butterfly free flap for reconstruction of laryngopharyngeal defect: surgical considerations.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of a pharyngoesophageal defect remains a challenging problem, especially with involvement of the neck skin. This study aimed to demonstrate the surgical technique of utilising a butterfly modification of the anterolateral thigh flap. RESULTS: Reconstruction of the pharyngoesophageal defect was accomplished using the butterfly modification of the anterolateral thigh free flap. The flap was tubed on the leg while still being attached to the pedicle, to minimise the ischaemia time. CONCLUSION: Butterfly anterolateral thigh free flap allows for multi-layer closure of t

[Let's Watch the Movie, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Think About the Patient's Feelings].

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a movie based on the true story of an editor-in-chief, Jean-Dominique Bauby, who had locked-in syndrome due to a cerebral infarction. He made an entire story by communication with his staff using solely eye movements. The patient's real emotions to the medical staff was presented in the movie. I would highly recommend this movie, and in this article, I explain and describe locked-in syndrome and my impressions of this movie.

A case report of a proximal corporal cavernosa injury presenting with butterfly perineal ecchymosis.

This is a case of a proximal corpus cavernosa fracture presenting with scrotal edema and butterfly perineal ecchymosis sparing the penile shaft. Preoperative MRI obviated the need for circumferential incision and degloving of the penis and guided immediate incision over the area of corporal injury. The presentation, diagnostic work-up, and surgical treatment are discussed.

A modified diet to support conservation of the Atala hairstreak butterfly (Eumaeus atala Poey).

Raising insects in a laboratory for release into the wild is a common conservation practice, but maintaining breeding colonies year-round can be limited by seasonal food availability. Food availability is particularly challenging for insects which depend on specific host plants. For example, our early efforts to rear the imperiled Atala hairstreak butterfly (Eumaeus atala Poey) resulted in colony failure during winter due to lack of food. To overcome this barrier, we developed a modified freeze-dried host plant diet to support the colony. The diet consisted of reconstituted freeze-dried leaves

Topographically Conductive Butterfly Wing Substrates for Directed Spiral Ganglion Neuron Growth.

Spiral ganglion neuron (SGN) degeneration can lead to severe hearing loss, and the directional regeneration of SGNs has shown great potential for improving the efficacy of auditory therapy. Here, a novel 3D conductive microstructure with surface topologies is presented by integrating superaligned carbon-nanotube sheets (SA-CNTs) onto Morpho Menelaus butterfly wings for SGN culture. The parallel groove-like topological structures of M. Menelaus wings induce the cultured cells to grow along the direction of its ridges. The excellent conductivity of SA-CNTs significantly improves the efficiency o

Recessive Z-linked lethals and the retention of haplotype diversity in a captive butterfly population.

Sex chromosomes are predicted to harbour elevated levels of sexually antagonistic variation due to asymmetries in the heritability of recessive traits in the homogametic versus heterogametic sex. This evolutionary dynamic may manifest as high recessive load specifically affecting the homogametic sex, and the retention of haplotype diversity in small populations. We tested the hypothesis that the Z chromosome in the butterfly Bicyclus anynana carries a high inbred load for male fertility and viability. Homozygosity of Z chromosome blocks was produced by daughter-father backcrosses, and inferred

The conchal butterfly graft in secondary reconstruction of the bilateral cleft lip nasal deformity.

OBJECTIVES: The bilateral cleft nasal deformity is characterized by a short columella and a broad, flattened nasal tip. Secondary correction is challenging and often complicated by skin envelope scarring and hypoplastic alar cartilages. Adequate and durable tip projection requires a procedure that adequately augments the nasal tip and maximizes tip support. We describe a novel technique for secondary correction of this deformity in the immature pediatric population. METHODS: The conchal butterfly graft technique utilizes a folded cartilage construct to simultaneously increase tip projection a

Ingestional and transgenerational effects of the Fukushima nuclear accident on the pale grass blue butterfly.

One important public concern in Japan is the potential health effects on animals and humans that live in the Tohoku-Kanto districts associated with the ingestion of foods contaminated with artificial radionuclides from the collapsed Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. Additionally, transgenerational or heritable effects of radiation exposure are also important public concerns because these effects could cause long-term changes in animal and human populations. Here, we concisely review our findings and implications related to the ingestional and transgenerational effects of radiation exposu

Differentiating between Traumatic Pathology and Congenital Variant: A Case Report of Butterfly Vertebra.

Butterfly vertebra is a rare congenital malformation of the spine, which is usually reported in the literature as an isolated finding. We describe a 40-year-old woman that presented to our emergency department with back pain and sciatica. Initial radiological evaluation revealed an incidental finding of a L4 butterfly vertebra in the anteroposterior and lateral view radiographs. The patient presented with no neurological deficit. This rare congenital anomaly is usually asymptomatic, and awareness of its non-traumatic nature is critical in order to establish a correct diagnosis. Further evaluat
