The potential health effects associated with electronic-cigarette.

A good old gateway theory that electronic-cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are widely recognized as safer tobacco substitutes. In actuality, demographics also show that vaping cannibalizes smoking, the best explanation of the data is the "common liability". However, the utilization of e-cigarette products remains a controversial topic at present. Currently, there has been a widespread and substantial growth in e-cigarette use worldwide owing to their endless new flavors and customizable characteristics. Furthermore, e-cigarette has grown widespread among smokers as well as non-smokers, including adol

Cross-Sectional Serosurvey and Risk Factors Associated with the Presence of Toxoplasma gondii Antibodies in Pigs in Greece.

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide reported zoonotic infection caused by the protozoon Toxoplasma gondii. Pigs may become infected by ingesting feed or water contaminated with cat faeces, by cannibalism, and/or by eating infected rodents. T. gondii infected edible tissues of pigs are a source of infection for humans. This study was undertaken to detect seropositivity of pigs against T. gondii and identify possible risk factors as well as to compare two serological methods. METHODS: A total of 609 blood samples were collected from 10% of the sows from 65 pig farms located in mainland G

Common avian infection plagued the tyrant dinosaurs.

BACKGROUND: Tyrannosaurus rex and other tyrannosaurid fossils often display multiple, smooth-edged full-thickness erosive lesions on the mandible, either unilaterally or bilaterally. The cause of these lesions in the Tyrannosaurus rex specimen FMNH PR2081 (known informally by the name 'Sue') has previously been attributed to actinomycosis, a bacterial bone infection, or bite wounds from other tyrannosaurids. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted an extensive survey of tyrannosaurid specimens and identified ten individuals with full-thickness erosive lesions. These lesions were describe

The human prion diseases. A review with special emphasis on new variant CJD and comments on surveillance.

The transmissible spongiform encephalopathies or prion diseases represent a new group of diseases with unique clinical and neuropathological features, the transmission of which is both genetic and infectious. The responsible agent is unconventional and appears to be largely composed of a glycoprotein, the prion protein PrP. This is normally present on different cells. In prion diseases, it becomes converted to the pathogenic form PrPres which is resistant to proteinase and accumulates within the brain and this process is accompanied by the development of spongiform change, gliosis and neuronal

Strain variation in immune response and behavior following the death of cage cohorts.

Strain differences in both immune function and behavior were observed following exposure of mice to the death of cage-cohorts. AKR/J, BALB/cN, and C3H/HeJ mice were exposed to a dead cohort for two hours at 48 hour intervals for 30 days. During this two hour period, AKR/J mice displayed intense fighting and mounting behavior. In addition, these mice attacked, cannibalized, and buried carcasses. Neither C3H/HeJ nor BALB/cN mice exhibited the complete repertoire of behaviors directed at either carcasses or cage-cohorts observed in AKR/J mice. After 15 exposures to the death of cage-cohorts, allo

Kuru in the 21st century--an acquired human prion disease with very long incubation periods.

BACKGROUND: Kuru provides the principal experience of epidemic human prion disease. Its incidence has steadily fallen after the abrupt cessation of its route of transmission (endocannibalism) in Papua New Guinea in the 1950s. The onset of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), and the unknown prevalence of infection after the extensive dietary exposure to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) prions in the UK, has led to renewed interest in kuru. We investigated possible incubation periods, pathogenesis, and genetic susceptibility factors in kuru patients in Papua New Guinea. METHODS: We

The effects of temperature changes on Totoaba macdonaldi larval development, growth, and respiratory rates.

Understanding the effects of environmental temperature on marine fish larvae is crucial for optimizing feeding regimes and promoting optimal development and growth from a zootechnical perspective in aquaculture practices. The present study investigated the impact of different rearing temperatures on development, growth, and oxygen consumption rates of Totoaba macdonaldi larvae. An open-flow seawater recirculating system was used in which larvae (150 specimens/L) were exposed in triplicate to four rearing temperatures (20, 24, 26, and 28 °C) for 24 days under standard larval rearing conditions.

Sustainable mobility in auto-dominated Metro Boston: Challenges and opportunities post-COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted society as we knew it in a variety of ways, with especially severe impacts on low-income households. Even before COVID-19, Metro Boston was witnessing a rise in private car ownership and decreasing mass transit ridership, further exacerbated by a historical spatial mismatch that made low-income commuters relatively more dependent on mass transit. Accounts of overcrowded buses and trains since early March have heightened psychological dread among regular transit commuters, some of whom have already purchased a private car or intend to do so within the next ye

Sublethal concentration of insecticide amplifies interference competition in a tortrix moth.

Insecticides are extensively used worldwide to kill insect pests, yet organisms are most often exposed to insecticides at sublethal concentrations. Our understanding of sublethal effects on life histories is needed to predict the impact of insecticides on population dynamics and improve insecticide use and pest control. Sublethal concentrations can impact life histories directly and indirectly through changes in the intraspecific competition. Yet, few studies have evaluated the sublethal effects on intraspecific competition and these do not disentangle the insecticide effects on interference c

Transience of the North American High Plains landscape and its impact on surface water.

Ecosystem diversity and human activity in dry climates depend not just on the magnitude of rainfall, but also on the landscape's ability to retain water. This is illustrated dramatically in the High Plains of North America, where despite the semi-arid modern and past climate, the hydrologic conditions are diverse. Large rivers sourced in the Rocky Mountains cut through elevated plains that exhibit limited river drainage but widespread surface water in the form of ephemeral (seasonal) playa lakes1, as well as extensive groundwater hosted in the High Plains aquifer of the Ogallala formations2. Above-elbow amputation and death following human bite mismanaged by quacks: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Human bite is a common injury sustained during a fight, love passion, self mutilation, cannibalism or vampirism. Although widely reported as being more dangerous than animal bites, such complications as limb amputation from gangrene and eventually death is either uncommon or scarcely reported in our environment. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the dangers of human bite as a potential cause of severe morbidity and mortality especially when poorly managed. METHODOLOGY: A 30 year old Fulani herdsman with gangrene of the right hand, and distal forearm presenting in coma 10 days after sustain

Invasive micropapillary carcinomas of the ampullo-pancreatobiliary region and their association with tumor-infiltrating neutrophils.

Invasive micropapillary carcinoma, originally described as a distinctive type of invasive carcinoma in the breast, is being increasingly recognized as a separate entity in many other organs; however, it has not yet been documented in the pancreas or periampullary region. In this study, 313 pancreatic and 73 periampullary carcinomas were reviewed to investigate the micropapillary pattern in this location. Eight periampullary and eight pancreatic cases (4%) were composed at least focally (>20%) of invasive micropapillary carcinoma. The patients were 10 males and six females, mean age 69 years. T

Genetic studies in relation to kuru: an overview.

Kuru is a subacute neurodegenerative disease presenting with limb ataxia, dysarthria, and a shivering tremor. The disease progress to complete motor and mental incapacity and death within 6 to 24 months. Neuropathologically, a typical pattern of neuronal loss, astrocytic and microglial proliferation, characteristic "kuru-type" amyloid plaques, and PrP deposits in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum are observed. Kuru is the prototype of a group of human transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), or "prion" diseases, that include hereditary, sporadic and infectious forms. The latest membe

Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) infection in synanthropic small mammals (rodents and shrews) in Northeastern India: Zoonotic and One Health implications.

Rapid urbanization has increased overlap between human and synanthropic rodent habitats. This intensifies human-animal-environment interactions and facilitates the emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic diseases, highlighting the importance of the "One Health" concept. Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) is a neglected zoonotic parasite where rodents serve as the principal reservoirs. Human infections are often asymptomatic, but they can also cause liver failure and death in severe cases, with definitive diagnosis requiring liver biopsy. This study was conducted in Meghalaya, Northea

Triiodothyronine-induced hyperthyroidism and reproduction in female rats.

The effect of L-triiodothyronine (L-T3)-induced hyperthyroidism on reproduction in female rats was studied. Treatment groups used were normal control, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 micrograms L-T3/100 g body weight (b.w.)/day. Subcutaneous injections of L-T3 began the first day of estrus until day 1 or day 19 of lactation. All rats given 1, 2, or 4 micrograms L-T3 had regular estrous cycles and normal number of pregnancies. Levels of L-T3 at 8 or 16 micrograms results in abnormal estrous cycles. Only one pregnancy occurred in the 8 micrograms group and no rats became pregnant in the 16 micrograms group.

Melatonin supplementation alleviates stocking-density stress and enhances growth, immune, and physiological performance of Sparus aurata cultured in groundwater-based systems.

The intensive mariculture of S. aurata can promote aquaculture development, although it can also pose challenges because of predatory behavior and environmental stressors caused by intensification. The objective of this study is to alleviate stress and prevent cannibalism, thereby improving the fish's performance and welfare. A 90-day growth experiment investigated the dietary inclusion of melatonin (ML) on Sparus aurata performance, physiology, immunity, histopathology, and welfare when grown in saline groundwater (36 ppt) at stocking densities (SD) of 50 fish/500 L‒tank (SD50) and 100 fish/5

Kuru Disease: Bridging the Gap Between Prion Biology and Human Health.

This article explores the intriguing case of Kuru disease, a rare and fatal prion disease that once afflicted the Fore people of Papua New Guinea. Scientists are still perplexed as to the origins of Kuru because efforts to discover infectious agents like viruses have been ineffective. Initial research revealed similarities between Kuru and scrapie, a neurological disorder that affects sheep, suggesting potential similarities between the two diseases. In further research, experiments in which chimpanzee brain tissue from Kuru patients was implanted led to the development of Kuru-like symptoms i
