Cardiovascular self-organized criticality has recently been demonstrated. We studied a model of autonomic nervous system changes to better characterize heart rate variability self-organized criticality. The model included short and long-term autonomic changes associated with body position and physical training, respectively. Twelve professional soccer players took part in a 5-week training session divided into "Warm-up", "Intensive", and "Tapering" periods. A stand test was carried out at the beginning and end of each period. Heart rate variability was recorded beat by beat (Polar Team 2). Bra

The kidneys and heart share functions with the common goal of maintaining homeostasis. When kidney injury occurs, many compounds, the so-called "uremic retention solutes" or "uremic toxins," accumulate in the circulation targeting other tissues. The accumulation of uremic toxins such as p-cresyl sulfate, indoxyl sulfate and inorganic phosphate leads to a loss of a substantial number of body functions. Although the concept of uremic toxins is dated to the 1960s, the molecular mechanisms capable of leading to renal and cardiovascular injuries are not yet known. Besides, the greatest toxic effect

Glucose transporters are essential for the heart to sustain its function. Due to its nature as a high energy-consuming organ, the heart needs to catabolize a huge quantity of metabolic substrates. For optimized energy production, the healthy heart constantly switches between various metabolites in accordance with substrate availability and hormonal status. This metabolic flexibility is essential for the maintenance of cardiac function. Glucose is part of the main substrates catabolized by the heart and its use is fine-tuned via complex molecular mechanisms that include the regulation of the gl

Cardiovascular health deteriorates with age, and age is one of the strongest risk factors for cardiovascular complications including myocardial infarction, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, and death related to heart diseases. In this review, we show that expression of proinflammatory cytokines (PICs) increases throughout the human lifespan, and this increase is correlated with cardiovascular health, morbidity, and mortality. We argue that increased concentrations of circulating PICs are not only markers of chronic low-grade inflammation, but they also serve as an important pathophysiologica

The autonomic nervous system is a powerful regulator of circulatory adjustments to acute hemodynamic stresses. Here we focus on new concepts that emphasize the chronic influence of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems on cardiovascular pathology. The autonomic neurohumoral system can dramatically influence morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease through newly discovered influences on the innate and adaptive immune systems. Specifically, the end-organ damage in heart failure or hypertension may be worsened or alleviated by pro- or anti-inflammatory pathways of the immune syst

Nitric oxide (NO) is synthesized by a family of NO synthases (NOS), including neuronal, inducible, and endothelial NOS (n/i/eNOS). NO-mediated effects can be beneficial or harmful depending on the specific risk factors affecting the disease. In hypertension, the vascular relaxation response to acetylcholine is blunted, and that to direct NO donors is maintained. A reduction in the activity of eNOS is mainly responsible for the elevation of blood pressure, and an abnormal expression of iNOS is likely to be related to the progression of vascular dysfunction. While eNOS/nNOS-derived NO is protect

The neonatal foal is in a transitional state from prenatal to postnatal circulation. Healthy newborn foals often have cardiac murmurs and dysrhythmias, which are usually transient and of little clinical significance. The neonatal foal is prone to infection and cardiac trauma. Echocardiography is the main tool used for valuation of the cardiovascular system. With prompt identification and appropriate action, dysrhythmias and other sequel to cardiac trauma can be corrected. With infection, the management and prognosis are driven by concurrent sepsis. Congenital disease represents an interesting

In article covers theoretical preconditions for the hypothesis about helical (spiral or swirling) blood flow in cardiovascular system followed by its experimental corroboration. The role of the modern blood flow visualization methods--such as Color Doppler ultrasound and magnetic-resonance angiography--in registration and investigation of the regularities of the given phenomenon is described. The data describing the known parameters of helical blood flow--such as direction of the rotation and its quantitative parameters in large arteries--are given. The main hypotheses for flow screw mechanism

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of a variety of clinical conditions, including atherosclerosis, hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, myocardial infarction, and heart failure. Inhibition of the RAAS with either angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) has been shown to be effective in lowering blood pressure and reducing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in various at-risk patient populations. A number of studies have shown that these 2 classes are effective in reducing the rate of re

BACKGROUND: Blood pressure, as well as blood volume homeostasis, depends to a large extent on humoral influences stemming from the renin-angiotensin axis and the sympathetic nervous system. Evidence has been provided that a large part of this homeostatic modulation is effected by the complex interactions between the two systems.
OBJECTIVES: The present review will focus on three major issues. First it will examine the physiological and pathophysiological relevance of angiotensin-sympathetic crosstalk discussing possible sites, mechanisms and effects of the interaction. It will then address th

In recent years, increasing evidence has been provided that even minor renal dysfunction is a powerful cardiovascular risk factor that induces typical cardiovascular alterations and thus predisposes to coronary heart disease as well as to noncoronary cardiovascular problems. This first had been noted in patients with diabetes but now has been confirmed amply in patients without diabetes as well. Numerous heterogeneous abnormalities have been described in patients with early renal dysfunction (e.g., microalbuminuria, reduced estimated GFR). One final common pathway seems to be endothelial cell

Although the presence of mineralocorticoid binding sites have been demonstrated in brain, little is known about their physiological role. The purpose of this study was to evaluate possible interactions between a relatively short 2-day central infusion of aldosterone (5 ng/h) and a diverse group of centrally acting pressor agents. The intracerebroventricular infusion of aldosterone selectively attenuated the pressor response produced by the injection of arginine vasopressin (AVP, 10-400 ng) into the lateral ventricle without altering the responses to ventricular administration of 50-200 ng angi

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease worldwide and is increasingly recognized as a systemic cardiometabolic disorder. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) represents the leading cause of mortality in patients with MASLD. This review aims to summarize current evidence on the epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, and clinical impact of MASLD on cardiovascular outcomes. We reviewed epidemiological studies, mechanistic investigations, imaging-based analyses, and large population-based cohorts evaluating the as

Patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are more vulnerable to opportunistic infections (OIs) such as Talaromycosis marneffei (TSM), which is associated with a high mortality rate. Nevertheless, the effect of TSM on the cardiovascular system of affected patients remains elusive. To that end, this research aimed to investigate the impact of TSM on the cardiovascular system in the individuals with HIV/AIDS. Participants were assigned to the HIV/AIDS patients group or the HIV/AIDS patients with TSM (HIV/AIDS+TSM) group. A total of 120 individuals were included in the present stud

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) plays a pivotal role in regulating cardiovascular function, fluid balance, and blood pressure. Recent research has revealed the RAAS's influence extends beyond cardiovascular physiology, encompassing key roles in inflammation, fibrosis, immune regulation, cancer progression, and organ-specific disease mechanisms. This review provides a comprehensive overview of classical and alternative RAAS pathways, focusing on the dual roles of angiotensin II (Ang II) and angiotensin-(1-7) (Ang 1-7), mediated through AT1R, AT2R, MasR, and MrgD receptors. We di

The mechanisms driving the cardiovascular and renal benefits of therapies targeting intestinal hormones in type 2 diabetes are still not fully understood. We propose that incretin hormones-glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP)-act as a critical link connecting digestion, metabolism, and cardiovascular function, supporting physiological adaptations to nutrient intake. Incretin hormones help regulate blood flow and cardiac activity, enhancing nutrient absorption while protecting the heart and vessels. After meals, incretin hormones promote vasodilatio
