Prevalence of acute toxoplasmosis infection among 41,112 pregnant women and the mother-to-child transmission rate in a public hospital in South Brazil.

Untreated acute toxoplasmosis among pregnant women can lead to serious sequelae among newborns, including neurological impairment and blindness. In Brazil, the risk of congenital toxoplasmosis (CTox) has not been fully evaluated. Our aim was to evaluate trends in acute toxoplasmosis prevalence from 1998-2005, the incidence of CTox and the rate of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT). A cross-sectional study was undertaken to dentify patients who fit the criteria for acute toxoplasmosis during pregnancy. Exposed newborns were included in a historical cohort, with a median follow-up time of 11 mo

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis A-induced acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare but leading cause of pediatric ALF in developing countries. ALF is defined as severe acute liver injury with coagulopathy and hepatic encephalopathy occurring within 26 weeks of symptom onset in patients without pre-existing chronic liver disease. It carries high mortality, accounting for approximately 8% of liver transplants worldwide, with reported survival rates ranging from 30-60% in the absence of transplantation. Fewer than 1% of patients with hepatitis A progress to ALF. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old girl from Wajaal

Developing a national birth cohort for child health research using a hospital admissions database in England: The impact of changes to data collection practices.

BACKGROUND: National birth cohorts derived from administrative health databases constitute unique resources for child health research due to whole country coverage, ongoing follow-up and linkage to other data sources. In England, a national birth cohort can be developed using Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), an administrative database covering details of all publicly funded hospital activity, including 97% of births, with longitudinal follow-up via linkage to hospital and mortality records. We present methods for developing a national birth cohort using HES and assess the impact of changes t

[Birth in Out-of-Hospital Settings--Differences in Maternal and Neonatal Outcome of Women with their Second Child and a Prior Caesarean Section Compared to First Paras].

BACKGROUND: Vaginal birth after Caesarean (VBAC) in out-of-hospital settings is controversial. With increasing Caesarean rates, more women with a prior Caesarean will decide to give birth in midwife-led birth-centres or at home. Therefore the study explores the question about maternal and neonatal outcomes in German out-of-hospital settings. METHOD: A retrospective study of German out-of-hospital data from 2005 to 2011 was undertaken. Included were 66,437 singleton pregnancies in cephalic presentation at term. This study describes the outcome parameters of first paras compared to mothers with
