[Features of the electronic eikonometer for the study of binocular function].

After presenting the components of this electronic eikonometer (device schematic and organizational chart) for the analysis and measurement of perceptive effects of binocular disparity, we review the specifics (tests with incorporated magnifications seen in polarized light) and the advantages of this device as compared to existing eikonometers (absence of any intermediary optical system). We provide a list of available tests in the test library and their parametric characteristics: Ogle Spatial Test for Aniseikonia, Fixation Disparity Test: binocular nonius, and Linear and Random stereoscopic

The influence of shape cues on the perception of lighting direction.

Three scene properties determine the luminances in the image of a shaded object: the material reflectance, the illuminant position, and the object's shape. Because all three properties determine the image, one cannot solve for any one property without knowing the other two. Nevertheless, people perceive consistent 3D shape and consistent lighting in shaded images; they must therefore be making assumptions about the unknown properties. We conducted two psychophysical experiments to determine how viewers use shape information to estimate the lighting direction from shaded images. In the first ex

Induced motion in depth and the effects of vergence eye movements.

Induced motion is the false impression that physically stationary objects move when in the presence of other objects that really move. In this study, we investigated this motion illusion in the depth dimension. We raised three related questions, as follows: (1) What cues in the stimulus are responsible for this motion illusion in depth? (2) Is the size of this illusion affected by vergence eye movements? And (3) are the effects of eye movements different for motion in depth and for motion in the frontoparallel plane? To answer these questions, we measured the point of subjective stationarity.

Effects of target distance and pupil size on letter contrast sensitivity with simultaneous vision bifocal contact lenses.

Using simulated presbyopia we measured the effects of target vergence and pupil size on letter contrast sensitivity while subjects wore accurately centered simultaneous vision bifocal contact lenses. These experiments examined the increase in depth of focus provided by two bifocal contact lenses, and the effects of pupil size on near and distance vision. Monocular contrast sensitivity was assessed with three different designs of soft contact lenses. First, as a single vision control, we measured contrast sensitivity with a Bausch & Lomb, Optima 38 lens corrected for distance. We then measured

A neural model of visual figure-ground segregation from kinetic occlusion.

Freezing is an effective defense strategy for some prey, because their predators rely on visual motion to distinguish objects from their surroundings. An object moving over a background progressively covers (deletes) and uncovers (accretes) background texture while simultaneously producing discontinuities in the optic flow field. These events unambiguously specify kinetic occlusion and can produce a crisp edge, depth perception, and figure-ground segmentation between identically textured surfaces--percepts which all disappear without motion. Given two abutting regions of uniform random texture

Human EEG and artificial neural networks reveal disentangled representations and processing timelines of object real-world size and depth in natural images.

Remarkably, human brains have the ability to accurately perceive and process the real-world size of objects, despite vast differences in distance and perspective. While previous studies have delved into this phenomenon, distinguishing the processing of real-world size from other visual properties, like depth, has been challenging. Using the THINGS EEG2 dataset with human EEG recordings and more ecologically valid naturalistic stimuli, our study combines human EEG and representational similarity analysis to disentangle neural representations of object real-world size from retinal size and perce

Perceptual Coupling Based on Depth and Motion Cues in Stereovision-Impaired Subjects.

When an object is partially occluded, the different parts of the object have to be perceptually coupled. Cues that can be used for perceptual coupling are, for instance, depth ordering and visual motion information. In subjects with impaired stereovision, the brain is less able to use stereoscopic depth cues, making them more reliant on other cues. Therefore, our hypothesis is that stereovision-impaired subjects have stronger motion coupling than stereoscopic subjects. We compared perceptual coupling in 8 stereoscopic and 10 stereovision-impaired subjects, using random moving dot patterns that

Effects of Reduced Acuity and Stereo Acuity on Saccades and Reaching Movements in Adults With Amblyopia and Strabismus.

PURPOSE: Our previous work has shown that amblyopia disrupts the planning and execution of visually-guided saccadic and reaching movements. We investigated the association between the clinical features of amblyopia and aspects of visuomotor behavior that are disrupted by amblyopia. METHODS: A total of 55 adults with amblyopia (22 anisometropic, 18 strabismic, 15 mixed mechanism), 14 adults with strabismus without amblyopia, and 22 visually-normal control participants completed a visuomotor task while their eye and hand movements were recorded. Global motion perception is associated with motor function in 2-year-old children.

The dorsal visual processing stream that includes V1, motion sensitive area V5 and the posterior parietal lobe, supports visually guided motor function. Two recent studies have reported associations between global motion perception, a behavioural measure of processing in V5, and motor function in pre-school and school aged children. This indicates a relationship between visual and motor development and also supports the use of global motion perception to assess overall dorsal stream function in studies of human neurodevelopment. We investigated whether associations between vision and motor fun

Adaptation to interocular differences in blur.

Adaptation to a blurred image causes a physically focused image to appear too sharp, and shifts the point of subjective focus toward the adapting blur, consistent with a renormalization of perceived focus. We examined whether and how this adaptation normalizes to differences in blur between the two eyes, which can routinely arise from differences in refractive errors. Observers adapted to images filtered to simulate optical defocus or different axes of astigmatism, as well as to images that were isotropically blurred or sharpened by varying the slope of the amplitude spectrum. Adaptation to th

Stereopsis and magnocellular sensitivity in schizophrenia.

There is evidence to indicate that schizophrenic individuals, in addition to cognitive deficiencies, also suffer from visual deficits. These deficits, it has been proposed, are the result of a deficiency in the magnocellular portion of the early visual system. A number of approaches have been used in attempts to assess the sensitivity of the magnocellular system in individuals with schizophrenia. It has recently been proposed that magnocellular sensitivity can be tested by measuring stereo acuity, i.e. by measuring the accuracy with which visual depth can be detected based on differences in th

A Dataset for Depth in Robotic Endoscopy with Dynamic Scenarios (DRENDS).

Depth perception in robotic minimally invasive surgery remains a critical challenge for many downstream tasks, demanding advanced depth estimation techniques and ground truth data for their validation. Current datasets lack data with ground-truth depth information in dynamic scenarios; therefore, we present DRENDS (Depth in Robotic Endoscopy with Dynamic Scenarios)1, a novel dataset comprising sequences of high-resolution stereo images captured during the robotic laparoscopic manipulation of a human phantom and ex vivo porcine tissue, along with ground-truth point clouds for each frame and cal

Emerging therapies for improving stereoacuity in amblyopia. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Emerging treatments, including virtual reality (VR)-based therapies, video games, and movies, have been proposed to enhance stereoacuity in individuals with binocular vision disorders such as amblyopia and strabismus. However, their comparative effectiveness remains uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of these emerging treatments in improving stereoacuity through within-group analyses, and to compare their outcomes with occlusion, in studies with direct group comparisons. We conducted comprehensive literature searches in PubMed, MEDLINE, Coch

Assessment of stereopsis in pediatric and adolescent spectacle-corrected refractive error - A cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: To assess the level of stereopsis in school children with spectacle-corrected refractive errors using Titmus fly and Randot stereo tests, evaluate the factors associated with the level of stereopsis, and determine the level of agreement between the two tests. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was done on 5- to 18-year-old school-children wearing spectacles for at least 1-month duration. Visual acuity was assessed using Snellen's visual acuity chart, and their spectacle correction being used currently was measured using an auto lensmeter. The level of stereopsis was assessed using Rand

Compression of perceived depth as a function of viewing conditions.

PURPOSE: The magnification produced by a low-vision telescope has been shown to compress perceived depth. Looking through such a telescope, however, also entails monocular viewing and visual field restriction, and these viewing conditions, taken together, were also shown to compress perceived depth. The research presented here quantitatively explores the separate effects of each of these viewing conditions on perceived depth. METHODS: Participants made verbal estimates of the length, relative to the width, of rectangles presented in a controlled table-top setting. In experiment 1, the rectang

Vision anomalies and reading skill: a meta-analysis of the literature.

We report a meta-analysis of studies of the relation of vision anomalies to reading skill. Meta-analysis is a quantitative technique for combining the results of multiple studies that reduces the subjectivity of literature reviews. The results of the analysis of 34 studies of vision anomalies and reading skill that met the criteria for inclusion in the meta-analysis showed that hyperopia, exophoria at near, vertical phoria, anisometropia, and aniseikonia are associated with below average reading performance. Myopia and esophoria and esophoria at far are associated with average and above averag

Lateral short-term prism adaptation in clinical evaluation.

Data were obtained from a normal clinical population regarding heterophoria, associated phoria and short-term prism adaptation in an attempt to differentiate between those subjects with symptoms and those without. Correlation between heterophoria, associated phoria, prism adaptation and symptoms was low. A short prism-adaptation test was found to be of little value in diagnosing decompensated heterophoria in the general population. Subjects diagnosed as having decompensated heterophoria did not have an abnormal short-term prism-adaptation system. The clinical implications of these findings are
