Self-worth and life meaning: the perceived narrative frames on the identity of people with disabilities.

This study investigated the narrative frames of disability and their associations with disability identity in the context of China. Specifically, it explored the sense of Self-worth, Life Meaning, Perceived Discrimination, and Disability Denial in people with disabilities and the complex relationships between media narratives, impairment, and social constraints. Through framing analysis, this study found three tragedy narrative frames (traditional, medical, and charity) and three non-tragedy frames (inspirational, relationship, and rights) from the traditional media and social media. Hamstring strength and hip mobility associated with pain and disability in lumbar instability.

Chronic low back pain (LBP) has been hypothesized to involve lumbar instability, yet the roles of hamstring strength and hip mobility remain underexplored. While earlier studies focused on hamstring tightness, this study examined how these factors are strongly associated with pain and disability in young adults with lumbar instability. A case-control study was conducted on 129 participants (67 symptomatic, 62 asymptomatic) aged 18-35 years. Hamstring strength was assessed using the NordBord dynamometer, while hip mobility was measured using a goniometer. Pain intensity and disability were eval

The association of muscle weakness with functional disability in older patients with Diabetes mellitus: Measured by three different grip strength thresholds.

The association of muscle weakness with poor outcomes is well defined in general older population, but there is insufficient data on the association of muscle weakness with functionality in older patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). We aimed to investigate the predictivity of muscle weakness defined as low grip strength thresholds determined by EWGSOP2, and two regional thresholds in older patients with DM for functional disability. Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental ADL (IADL), grip strength, comorbidities, anthropometric and biochemical data from outpatient clinic medical record

Factors associated with disability among middle-aged and older African American women with osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Middle-aged and older African American women experience disproportionate rates of functional limitations and disability from osteoarthritis (OA) compared to other racial ethnic groups; however, little is known about what factors contribute to this disparity within African American women. OBJECTIVE: To examine factors associated with physical function and disability among African American women ages 50-80 with OA using the disablement process model. METHODS: This descriptive study included 120 African American women with OA from the Southwestern region of the United States. Regres

Development of a severity discrimination scale based on physical quality of life for patients with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Deterioration of quality of life in patients with chronic pain is difficult to treat. Chronic pain in patients with low quality of life may be "severe" and require multidisciplinary treatments. This study aimed to develop an objective severity discrimination scale based on quality of life measurements to identify patients with "severely disabling" chronic pain. METHODS: Subjects were 156 patients with chronic pain whose numerical rating pain score was ≥1 and who had pain for ≥3 months. Diseases associated with chronic pain included spinal diseases, joint diseases, concomitant dise

Racial Discrimination and Race-Based Biases on Orthopedic-Related Outcomes: An Integrative Review.

Musculoskeletal diseases often lead to functional limitations and debility. The burden of these debilitating diseases is not balanced across race and ethnicity. The Institute of Medicine (now referred to as the National Academy of Medicine) identified racial discrimination as a substantive cause of race-based health disparities for racial and ethnic minority groups. The purpose of this integrative review is to summarize the evidence on the relationship among racial discrimination, race-based implicit biases and other types of biases (e.g., gender and appearance), and orthopaedic-related outcom

Color Vision Losses in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by impairments in social/communication abilities and restricted behaviors. The present study aims to examine color vision discrimination in ASD children and adolescents without intellectual disability. The participants were also subdivided in order to compare color vision thresholds of autistic participants and those who achieved diagnostic criteria for Asperger Syndrome (AS). Nine subjects with autism, 11 participants with AS and 36 typically developing children and adolescents participated in the study. Color vi

Risk stratification of acute symptomatic anterior circulation intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis using an ABCD3-I-informed clinical-imaging score: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Acute symptomatic anterior circulation intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS; ≥70%) carries substantial risks of early neurological deterioration (END) and disability. We developed an ABCD3-I-informed clinical-imaging score incorporating pre-baseline progressive stroke, responsible-vessel stenosis, and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) infarct pattern for acute risk screening. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 133 consecutive patients (103 men, 30 women; mean age: 64.62 ± 10.56 years) with acute symptomatic anterior circulation ICAS (≥70% stenosis; onset ≤7 days) at a sing

Operationalising Article 13 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities the role of assistive technology in ensuring access to justice.

Access to justice is a determinant of the realisation of all other rights, including the right to health, employment, and education. As persons with disabilities experience increased discrimination and social exclusion and are at higher risk of violence than people without disabilities, it is crucial to ensure access to justice in both the civil and criminal legal spheres for people with disabilities. However, persons with disabilities experience multiple barriers at the macro/structural and individual levels to accessing justice. In light of the significance of access to justice for people wi

A comparison of blocked and mixed-trial methods for teaching auditory-visual discriminations.

Behavior analysts typically teach conditional discriminations in a mixed-trial format but may switch to a blocked-trial format for learners displaying limited acquisition. No known research has shown that mixed-trial methods are more effective or efficient than blocked-trial methods for teaching discriminations, so it is not clear why this format has been adopted as the "first-line" intervention. We compared blocked and mixed-trial formats for teaching novel auditory-visual discriminations to three adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Results show blocked-trial method

Asperger syndrome: how does it relate to non-verbal learning disability?

The syndrome of non-verbal learning disabilities (NLD) is associated with prominent non-verbal deficits such as reduced perceptual and spatial abilities, against a background of relatively intact verbal abilities. Asperger syndrome is one of the several developmental disorders for which Byron Rourke has claimed that almost all the signs and symptoms of NLD are present. This study investigated the claim utilizing a battery of neuropsychological tests that were found to be sensitive to NLD in the original learning disordered populations used to describe the syndrome. Children aged between 8 and

The merger and development of equivalence classes by unreinforced conditional selection of comparison stimuli.

Three experiments assessed the likelihood that subjects with histories of equivalence class development would respond conditionally on new discriminations in the absence of differential consequences for responses. In the first two experiments, two groups of subjects with different experimental histories, but whose performances showed four equivalence classes, responded on trials without explicit reinforcement involving samples from two of the classes and comparisons from the other two classes, in a two-choice matching-to-sample format. Subjects consistently selected a particular comparison in
