This article traces the development and present status of legislation pertaining to driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) and other drugs (DUID) in the United Kingdom (UK). The Road Safety Act of 1967 represented a paradigm shift in the way that traffic offenders were prosecuted for driving after consumption of alcohol. This new legislation defined punishable concentrations of alcohol (ethanol) in samples of the driver's blood (80 mg%) or urine (107 mg%). The creation of these statutory concentration limits meant that it was no longer necessary to prove that a suspect was under the infl

INTRODUCTION: When Canada legalized recreational cannabis in 2018, it also enhanced enforcement against impaired driving. This observational study analyzed how police-reported impaired driving rates evolved after those 2 policy changes.
METHODS: The study analyzed province-level annual counts of driving impaired by alcohol, drugs (including but not limited to cannabis), or both during 2009-2023. The data were published in 2024 and analyzed in 2025. Interrupted time-series regressions tested for changes in annual impairment rates per million population aged ≥16 years after 2018. The purpose of this review is to present an overview of roadside drug testing, driving enforcement, and drunk/drug driving detection around the world. Drunk and drug driving is a severe problem, not only in the UAE, but also around the world. This has important implications for road safety as drunk or drug driving may increase the chances of a driver's involvement in a road crash when compared to a drug-free driver. Recently, due to increases in drug-impaired drivers' crash involvement, many mobile roadside drug testing devices have been introduced to the market. These devices use oral fluid,

OBJECTIVE: Drunk driving is a major cause of road traffic injuries and deaths in Latin America. We evaluated the impact of a drunk driving intervention in Leon, Mexico on road traffic safety.
METHODS: The intervention included increased drunk driving penalties, enhanced sobriety checkpoints and a young adult-focused mass media campaign, beginning 19 December 2018. We created a synthetic control Leon from 12 Mexican municipalities from a pool of 87 based on similarity to Leon using key predictors from 2015 to 2019. We assessed the effect of the intervention on road traffic collisions overall a

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Drunk-driving accounts for a significant portion of traffic crashes in Taiwan. From 2008 to 2013, both the Taiwan Legislative Yuan and the federal administrative agencies collaborated to increase drunk-driving penalties. This study aimed to determine whether these sanction changes are associated with changes in the incidence of drunk-driving and subsequent hospital admissions.
DESIGN: Exploratory retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Taiwan.
PARTICIPANTS: All traffic crashes involving drunk-driving violations and every involved individual from 2003 to 2019 in Taiwan.

Traffic violations, particularly drink driving, are a menace to the drivers themselves, and to other road users. Drink driving crashes often cause death or serious injury to the driver. Understanding the recidivism effect factor of drink driving is essential for designing effective countermeasures. This study is based on register-based data from the National Police Agency, Ministry of the Interior of Taiwan and monthly administrative area information from 2012 to 2015 for the entire population. Hence, this study not only focuses on the effect factor and violation differences between recidivist

BACKGROUND: On May 14, 2013, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) proposed that states lower the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) illegal limit from 0.08 to 0.05 g/dL (also referred to as the 0.08 law and the 0.05 limit, respectively). In March 2017, this recommendation was signed into law in the State of Utah.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this survey is to investigate perceptions regarding enforcement of the 0.05 g/dL BAC limit.
METHOD: Opinions of law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and defense attorneys were obtained through a series of questionnaires and focus groups.

INTRODUCTION: Modifying risk perceptions related to driving after cannabis use (DACU) could deter individuals from enacting this behavior, as low-risk perception is associated with DACU engagement. This study identified sociodemographic characteristics, substance use, other driving behaviors, peer norms, and psychological characteristics that are associated with lower risk perception regarding DACU.
METHODS: Canadian drivers aged 17-35 who have used cannabis in the past year (n = 1,467) completed an online questionnaire. A multivariate linear regression model allowed for identifying variables

OBJECTIVE: To contextually examine facilitators of young driver decisions to ride with an impaired driver (RWI) or drive while impaired (DWI).
METHODS: Data were from the NIH's NEXT Generation Health Study (NEXT), a 7-year longitudinal nationally representative study with a U.S. probability cohort of 10th graders starting in 2009-2010. Using a multistage sequential explanatory mixed methods approach, we conducted latent class analysis (n = 2,783) to identify RWI/DWI trajectories from adolescence to young adulthood (Stage-1). We then conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with purposively s

AIM: To estimate the prevalence of drug and polydrug use among drunk-drivers during the driving license regranting program, in order to assess the inclusion of toxicological tests on hair and urine samples in the systematic methodology in this category of subjects.
SHORT SUMMARY: A total of 2160 drunk-drivers were tested for alcohol and drugs during driving license regranting. Thirty-one subjects showed alcohol use, 212 illicit drug use and, among these, 131 were polydrug users. Nineteen different patterns of drug and polydrug use were found. Cocaine was detected in 165 subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol-related car crashes are a leading cause of adolescent death, and one in five U.S. adolescents reports recent riding in a car with a drinking driver. How often the driver is an adult in the home (e.g., parent) is unknown. Pediatric visits offer an opportunity to counsel families to reduce this risk. Our study aim was to determine the prevalence of recent riding with a drinking driver (RWDD) who was an adult in the home among adolescent primary care patients and to identify the demographic and environmental (substance use among family members) profiles of those at increased ri

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-involved riders tend to engage in other risk-taking behaviours such as un-helmeted riding which could further increases injury severity. The combined effect of alcohol-involved and un-helmeted riding on fatal injuries is rarely investigated. This study investigated the interaction effect between blood alcohol concentration and helmet use on fatal injuries.
METHODS: This study used the National Taiwan Traffic Crash Dataset for the period from 2011 to 2015. Data on road crashes involving a motorcycle and an automobile were extracted and analysed. Multiple logistic regression

Objective: Norway introduced a "Vision Zero" strategy in 2001, using multiple approaches, aiming toward a future in which no one will be killed or seriously injured in road traffic crashes (RTCs). Official statistics show that the number of fatally injured road users has declined substantially from 341 deaths in 2000 to 117 in 2015. In-depth crash investigations of all fatal RTCs started in Norway in 2005. The aim of this study was to investigate whether fatal crash characteristics, vehicle safety features, and prevalence of drugs and/or alcohol among fatally injured drivers and riders has cha

The expected effects of increasing seat belt use on the number of killed or seriously injured (KSI) light vehicle occupants have been estimated for three scenarios of increased seat belt use in Norway, taking into account current seat belt use, the effects of seat belts and differences in crash risk between belted and unbelted drivers. The effects of seat belts on fatality and injury risk were investigated in a meta-analysis that is based on 24 studies from 2000 or later. The results indicate that seat belts reduce both fatal and non-fatal injuries by 60% among front seat occupants and by 44%

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to investigate the thematic links between methamphetamine (MA) users' consumption patterns; their perceptions about the effects that MA has on their thoughts, feelings, and behavior; and their tendency to drive following MA consumption.
METHODS: Seventeen MA users were recruited through a combination of social media advertising and third-party outreach. Participants completed a semi-structured interview lasting approximately 30 min. Interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns undermining impaired driving behavior.
RESULTS: An ove

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol-impaired driving presents a continued risk for traffic safety and results in a significant proportion of fatalities on the roadway. We examined how alcohol at a 0.05% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) compares to 0.10% BAC (above the current U.S. legal limit) in terms of impact on driving performance.
METHODS: Utilizing a within-subjects design, we recruited 108 healthy experienced drivers who were moderate to heavy drinkers. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design, we administered placebo and alcohol at the 0.05% and 0.10% BAC levels in a standardized simula

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the increase in the prevalence rate of drivers testing positive for alcohol when lowering the breath alcohol content (BrAC) limit from 0.25 to 0.10mg/l.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study using a sample of 8320 breath tests from a mandatory roadside random survey conducted on interurban roads in Catalonia in 2019.
RESULTS: The percentage of drivers with a BrAC>0.10mg/L was 3.8% (95%CI: 3.2-4.4), more than twice the percentage with a BrAC>0.25mg/L (1.6%, 95%CI: 1.2-2.0). Males (4.0%, 95%CI: 3.3-4.6 vs. 1.6%, 95%CI: 1.2-2.0) and those aged over 65 years (4.3%, 95%CI: 2.2-6.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol has been demonstrated to impair an individual's cognitive and motor abilities, resulting in a range of adverse consequences. Moreover, the probability of vehicular accidents is elevated in the aftermath of alcohol-impaired driving. The objective of this study was to evaluate the concordance between alcohol breath tests and blood alcohol tests used to determine alcohol levels, as well as the effect of time.
METHODS: This study was conducted retrospectively in a tertiary education and research hospital. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between the

BACKGROUND: Similar to drink driving, the prevalence of driving under the influence of cannabis (DUIC) is expected to depend on the availability and cost of cannabis which would impact cannabis use in both drivers and passengers, and factors that specifically target cannabis use in drivers such as the deterrent effect of traffic laws and driver's opinion about the risks and acceptability of DUIC. To disentangle these effects, we aimed to compare the prevalence of alcohol and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) detection 1) in drivers vs. passengers involved in motor vehicle accidents and 2) in drivers
