Cancer and the family: Variations by sex and race/ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Cancer affects patients and their families, but few data are available on factors associated with diversity of family structures among patients with cancer. Family is a source of both support and responsibility that must be understood to support patients and their families. METHODS: Pooled data (2004-2015) from the National Health Interview Study were used to compare characteristics of cancer survivors with and without minor children and differences by sex and race/ethnicity among survivors with minor children. RESULTS: 13.9% of cancer survivors have minor children in the househo

Trajectories of incarcerated coparenting: Examining differences across race and ethnicity.

Emerging research suggests that those coparenting with an incarcerated person experience multiple challenges. Examining incarcerated coparenting among minority fathers is especially salient as their incarceration rates are substantially higher than White males. This study utilized data from the Multi-Site Family Study on Incarceration, Parenting and Partnering Study to examine changes in coparenting relationships when the male partner was incarcerated. Theoretically guided by structural family therapy, latent growth models were used to evaluate trajectories of fathers' coparenting reliability

African American vs Caucasian race/ethnicity in adrenocortical carcinoma patients.

In some primaries, African American race/ethnicity predisposes to higher stage and worse survival. We tested for differences in cancer-specific mortality (CSM) and other-cause mortality (OCM) in patients with adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) according to African American vs Caucasian race/ethnicity. We hypothesized that African Americans present with higher tumor stage and grade, do not receive the same treatment, and experience worse oncological outcomes than Caucasians. Within Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, we identified 1016 ACC patients: 123 (12.1%) African Americans v

Short Stature: Understanding the Stature of Ethnicity in Height Determination.

Height is a polygenic trait with a high degree of heritability. Most (95%) children with short stature (defined as height below the third percentile) and poor growth (growth velocity <5 cm/year) do not have an endocrine disorder. The genetic basis for stature potential has been evaluated in recent years and is increasingly being recognized as a major basis for variation in height between different ethnic populations. Numerous genome-wide association studies have identified hundreds of loci linked to human growth. Apart from the genetic factors, various environmental, nutritional, hormonal, and

Race and ethnicity define disparate clinical outcomes in chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common upper airways inflammatory disease requiring multidisciplinary care. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if African Americans (AA), Latinxs, and nonLatinx White (White) patients have different chronic rhinosinusitis outcomes and to identify associated factors impacting these outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a large prospective cohort study of CRS patients who were evaluated and followed for several clinical variables at the initial encounter and after continuous management of CRS for a mean of 40 months. The Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) and Lund-Mac

Returning to work after a hand injury: Does ethnicity matter?

BACKGROUND: Hand injuries (HI) are common and may limit participation in work. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of ethnicity and other prognostic variables on return-to-work (RTW) among male manual workers after acute HI. METHODS: A cohort of 178 subjects (90 Arabs, 88 Jews) aged 22 to 65 was studied. Trained bilingual occupational therapists evaluated and interviewed the subjects, using structured validated questionnaires for evaluating personal and environmental factors, body function and structure, and activity limitation and participation restrictions. Disparities in Use of Subspecialty Concussion Care Based on Ethnicity.

Concussion is common and subspecialty care can be essential to ensure recovery. However, barriers may exist to accessing care. This study aimed to assess disparities in subspecialty concussion care related to ethnicity, limited English proficiency (LEP), and insurance status. We utilized logistic regression to analyze 2010-2015 administrative data from four Sports Medicine clinics, comparing odds of being seen for concussion to odds of being seen for fracture by ethnicity, insurance type, and interpreter usage, controlling for demographic factors. ICD-9 codes were used to identify concussion a

Oral corticosteroid use, obesity, and ethnicity in children with asthma.

Objective: Comorbid asthma and obesity leads to poorer asthma outcomes, partially due to decreased response to controller medication. Increased oral steroid prescription, a marker of uncontrolled asthma, may follow. Little is known about this phenomenon among Latino children. Our objective was to determine whether obesity is associated with increased oral steroid prescription for children with asthma, and to assess potential disparities in these associations between Latino and non-Hispanic white children. Methods: We examined electronic health record data from the ADVANCE national network of co

The Impact of Ethnicity on Craniosynostosis in the United States.

While many studies have examined potential risk factors for nonsyndromic craniosynostosis, there have been no publications to date investigating the role of ethnicity in the United States. The current study was undertaken as the first multi-center investigation to examine the relationship between ethnicity and nonsyndromic craniosynostosis, looking at both overall prevalence as well as potential correlation between ethnicity and pattern of affected suture site. A chart review of patients diagnosed with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis treated at four major children's hospitals was performed to ob

Race and Ethnicity Gaps in Global Hidradenitis Suppurativa Clinical Trials.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an often-debilitating disease characterized by chronic and recurrent painful nodules, abscesses, and sinus tracts affecting the intertriginous areas. Despite evidence in the literature of varying prevalence of HS among different racial and ethnic groups, no studies have evaluated the overall generalizability of clinical trial results considering the increased prevalence of HS among African American populations. Additionally, there is a paucity of data exploring the distribution of race and ethnicity in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for HS. The

Maternal race/ethnicity as a risk factor for cervical insufficiency.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PTB) affects 1 in 9 pregnancies in the United States. There are well known but poorly understood racial/ethnic disparities in PTB rates. The role that racial/ethnic disparities in cervical insufficiency (CI) may play in the overall disparities in preterm birth rates is unknown. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to examine racial/ethnic differences in risk of CI. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of singleton pregnant women in 2012 who were members of Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC), excluding elective termination,

Wideband acoustic immittance normative data: ethnicity, gender, aging, and instrumentation.

This article describes the effect of ethnicity, gender, aging, and instrumentation on wideband acoustic immittance (WAI). This is an important topic to investigate as the goal of any audiological test is optimize the test's sensitivity and specificity. One way to improve the test's sensitivity and specificity is to reduce the variability of the normative data. The impact of the aforementioned demographic characteristics on WAI norms has been reviewed, and where applicable its potential impact on clinical outcome has been discussed. Overall, differences observed between Caucasian and Chinese et

Ethnicity, violent offending, and vulnerability to schizophrenia: a pilot study.

Previous research has highlighted increased risk for schizophrenia in Afro-Caribbeans as well as over-representation in the prison population. This small-scale study examined the relationship between criminality, ethnicity, and psychosis-proneness in a male prison sample. Twenty British Caucasian and 20 Afro-Caribbean prisoners were divided into equal sub-groups of violent and non-violent offenders. Participants completed measures of schizotypy, delusional ideation, and hostility. Afro-Caribbean offenders scored more highly on negative schizotypy and delusional ideation than their Caucasian co
