Delayed Blood Culture Positivity in Fusobacterium nucleatum Bacteremia: A Retrospective Comparative Study.

OBJECTIVES: Blood culture time to positivity (TTP) in Fusobacterium nucleatum bacteremia remains poorly characterized at the species level. We aimed to characterize TTP in F. nucleatum bacteremia and compare it with that of representative anaerobes and common bloodstream pathogens. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective study of all F. nucleatum bacteremia episodes detected between December 2020 and March 2026. Episodes of Bacteroides fragilis, Clostridium perfringens, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia served as comparators. Episode-level TTP was defined as t

Fusobacterium nucleatum Promotes Bladder Cancer Development Through lncRNA IDH1-AS1-Mediated Autophagy.

Bladder cancer is a prevalent malignancy with a high recurrence rate, necessitating the identification of novel molecular targets for diagnosis and therapy. Recent studies have highlighted the role of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in cancer progression. This study aims to investigate the role of the lncRNA IDH1-AS1 in bladder cancer, focusing on its effects on tumor growth, cell proliferation, and autophagy-related protein expression. We utilized both in vivo and in vitro models to assess the impact of IDH1-AS1 overexpression and knockdown. Tumor growth was evaluated in nude mice model of blad

Tonsillar Microbial Signature of Fusobacterium nucleatum Associated With Epstein-Barr Virus Latency.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) acquired in childhood is asymptomatic, with the tonsils as the entry site to infect B lymphocytes and establish latency. Little is known about whether the microbiota influences EBV persistent infection. We aimed to characterize the tonsil microbiome with different EBV latency types. A cohort of 60 children with tonsillar hyperplasia were included. EBV latency types (0/I/II/III) and lytic phase were determined by immunohistochemistry. 16S NGS of lymphoid tonsillar tissue was carried out with the Illumina platform. Bioinformatic analysis was carried out with QIIME2 2023.

Fusobacterium nucleatum exacerbates colitis via STAT3 activation induced by Acetyl-CoA accumulation.

Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) has emerged as a potential contributor to ulcerative colitis (UC) pathogenesis, although the specific mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study demonstrates that F. nucleatum promotes colitis by disrupting intestinal barrier integrity, inducing apoptosis in epithelial cells, and modulating inflammatory pathways. Furthermore, we demonstrate that F. nucleatum promotes STAT3 acetylation at K685, followed by phosphorylation at Y705, thereby enhancing its transcriptional activity and exacerbating colitis severity. Additionally, F. nucleatum-mediate

Addressing controversy in Fusobacterium nomenclature: what exactly does "F. nucleatum" refer to?

The F. nucleatum group (sensu lato) is historically composed of four subspecies (F. nucleatum subsp. animalis, F. nucleatum subsp. nucleatum, F. nucleatum subsp. polymorphum, F. nucleatum subsp. vincentii). Although F. nucleatum sensu lato members are typically associated with oral disease, they have recently been shown to disseminate to the gastrointestinal tract and are associated with adverse health conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer (CRC). A growing debate over the nomenclature applied to Fusobacterium taxonomy has resulted in different names for these line

Peritonsillar abscess caused by Mycoplasma hominis and Fusobacterium necrophorum following oral sex.

Mycoplasma hominis is a bacterium that colonizes the genital tract of some females and males, as well as their respiratory tracts. Although only two cases of deep neck infection have been reported, the associations between the onset and sexual intercourse have not been reported. A healthy 19-year-old female was diagnosed with a left peritonsillar abscess. The patient had sexual intercourse with a new partner, including oral sex, two days prior to symptom onset. It was not known whether the male partner had urethritis symptoms. M. hominis and Fusobacterium necrophorum were isolated from the abs

Fusobacterium necrophorum Subsp. funduliforme in Tonsils from Various Patient Populations in Japan.

Fusobacterium necrophorum has recently been suggested to be associated with tonsillopharyngitis, peritonsillar abscess, and recurrent tonsillitis. Between the 2 subspecies of F. necrophorum, subsp. funduliforme is known to be a major human pathogen. To better understand the epidemiology of F. necrophorum subsp. funduliforme (FNSF), we studied the prevalence of FNSF in the tonsils of patients undergoing elective tonsillectomy (TE) for different indications. Adult patients who underwent elective TE from October 2014 to November 2015 were included. The tonsils were sent for aerobic and anaerobic

Fusobacterium nucleatum activates the immune response through retinoic acid-inducible gene I.

Retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I) is a cytosolic pattern recognition receptor involved in the sensing of RNA viruses and the initiation of antiviral responses. Fusobacterium nucleatum, a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium associated with periodontal disease, is capable of invading cells. We hypothesized that F. nucleatum's ability to invade cells allows the microorganism to activate the immune response through RIG-I. Bacterial invasion was found to be necessary for F. nucleatum-induced nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation. Following invasion of the human periodontal ligament fibroblas

Clinical spectrum of bacteraemic Fusobacterium infections: from septic shock to nosocomial bacteraemia.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium species are anaerobic bacteria that relatively rarely cause sepsis with a variable clinical presentation. METHODS: We reviewed the records of 52 consecutive patients who had Fusobacterium bacteraemia over a 10-y period. RESULTS: The clinical pictures could be classified into 4 groups: (1) patients who had Lemierre's syndrome with Fusobacterium necrophorum sepsis and internal jugular vein thrombosis, n = 5 (10%); (2) previously healthy patients who had F. necrophorum sepsis without any signs of macroscopic vascular thrombosis (but 5 of them had abscesses), n = 14 (27

Metastatic complications of Fusobacterium necrophorum sepsis. Two cases of Lemierre's postanginal septicemia.

We have recently encountered two instances of septicemia due to Fusobacterium necrophorum in adolescents. The presence of severe exudative pharyngitis in both patients pointed to the upper respiratory tract as the probable portal of entry. In one case, metastatic infection was manifested by multiple septic pulmonary emboli with associated pleural effusions. In the other case, diffuse encephalopathy and septic arthritis of the left shoulder and hip occurred. Unilateral neck pain, persistent bacteremia, and prolonged fever despite appropriate antibiotics were consistent with the presence of sept

The distinct roles of Negativicoccus and Fusobacterium in proximal- and late-onset colorectal cancer.

Despite the emerging role of the gut microbiome in colorectal cancer (CRC), its significance in early-onset CRC (EOCRC, < 50 y) versus late-onset CRC (LOCRC) and the molecular differences between proximal and distal CRC remain poorly understood. To circumvent the logistical and patient compliance challenges of stool collection, we explored the utility of anal swabs as a convenient alternative for characterizing gut microbiome signatures in CRC. We profiled the CRC microbiome using anal swabs (n = 76) and stool samples (n = 33) by 16S rRNA sequencing. Diversity indices were compared using Wilco

Culturomics reveals Fusobacterium-Prevotella mutualism as a hallmark of nasopharyngeal tumor microbiota.

The nasopharynx constitutes a critical niche in the upper respiratory tract, harboring a diverse microbiota linked to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), the mechanistic roles of which remain poorly understood. Here, we established the Nasopharyngeal Mucosal and Tumor-resident Bacterial Catalog (NMTBC) that comprises 5311 bacterial isolates representing 127 species, with 1006 of them being fully sequenced and annotated, providing a comprehensive culturable resource facilitating mechanistic dissection of the microbiome-tumor interactions. With NMTBC, we uncovered a Fusobacterium-Prevotella mutualis

[Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges of Otogenic Fusobacterium Necrophorum Infections: A Case Report].

Acute mastoiditis is an infectious complication of acute otitis media, potentially leading to life-threatening extracranial and intracranial sequelae. In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in the epidemiology of causative pathogens, with an increasing incidence of less common bacteria. This article presents the case of a 1.5-year-old child diagnosed with acute mastoiditis and additional complications, who failed to respond to empirical antibiotic therapy and had persistently negative cultures. Only through the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing was the causative organi

Fusobacterium nucleatum and response to treatment in colon and rectal cancer: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) has been implicated in the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC), immune modulation, and resistance to systemic therapies. However, its role as a predictive biomarker of treatment response remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the association between Fn and oncologic treatment outcomes in CRC. METHODS: This systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD420261327958). MEDLINE, Scopus, and CENTRAL were searched through March 2026. Eligible studies included adult CRC patient

Fluorescent Peptide Probe for Specific Detection and In Vivo Imaging of Fusobacterium Nucleatum.

Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), an opportunistic oral anaerobic pathogen, is closely associated with various oral disorders and colorectal cancer (CRC). Current detection methods for this bacterium suffer from technical complexity and labor intensiveness. In this study, we engineered TPAI-YQPVPE, a peptidic fluorescent probe, by conjugating an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorophore (TPAI) with the F. nucleatum-targeting peptide YQPVPE. This probe binds specifically to FomA, a major outer membrane protein of F. nucleatum, enabling its selective accumulation and robust fluorescen

Lemierre's syndrome secondary to fusobacterium necrophorum in an immunocompetent patient: A rare case.

Lemierre syndrome is a rare and life-threatening condition that typically arises secondary to an oropharyngeal infection, progressing to thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and dissemination of septic emboli, most commonly to the lungs. Diagnosis is confirmed via contrast-enhanced cervicothoracic CT imaging, which identifies the presence of internal jugular vein thrombosis. Immediate treatment involves broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, often utilizing a third-generation cephalosporin or a beta-lactam in combination with metronidazole. In select high-risk cases, anticoagulation may be warr
