BACKGROUND: Familial hypercholesterolemia is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by elevated serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, tendon xanthomas, and an increased risk of atherosclerotic heart disease. Diagnosing familial hypercholesterolemia at an early age is crucial owing to its potential to lead to severe cardiovascular complications, including coronary heart disease and aortic valve disease. Early detection allows timely intervention, such as lifestyle modifications and pharmacological treatments, which can significantly reduce these risks.

Twenty right metacarpal bones of Brazilian fetuses (ranging from 17 to 35 weeks post-conception) were studied by the allometric method to define the pattern of metacarpal growth. The metacarpal measurements analysed were their maximum length (ML), ossified shaft length (OSL) and midshaft breadth (MSB). These data were related to crown-rump length and the metacarpal weight to fetal weight. The increase in metacarpal measurements showed an allometric positive coefficient (kappa), highest in the OSL. The ML growth followed an axo-marginal pattern. The 3rd metacarpal showed the highest MSB kappa c

BACKGROUND: Although drug therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has recently improved, treating patients with established disease, whose hands have three major deformities (thumb deformity, finger deformities, and ulnar drift), remains a challenge. The underlying complex pathophysiology makes understanding these deformities difficult, and comprehensive assessment methods require accumulated skill with long learning curves. We aimed to establish a simpler composite method to understand the pathophysiology of and alterations in the hand deformities of patients with RA.
METHODS: We established a

BACKGROUND: Silicone metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint arthroplasty (SMPA) can reconstruct MCP joint deformities in the rheumatoid hand, but patient selection criteria for the procedure remains unclear. The authors used statistical learning to elucidate patient selection criteria that will enhance long-term patient-reported and functional outcomes in patients with severe hand rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective study of 169 adults with severe hand RA (average combined ulnar deviation and extensor lag at the MCP joint ≥50 degrees, per finger) with 1

Sensing techniques are important for solving problems of uncertainty inherent to intelligent grasping tasks. The main goal here is to present a visual sensing system based on range imaging technology for robot manipulation of non-rigid objects. Our proposal provides a suitable visual perception system of complex grasping tasks to support a robot controller when other sensor systems, such as tactile and force, are not able to obtain useful data relevant to the grasping manipulation task. In particular, a new visual approach based on RGBD data was implemented to help a robot controller carry out

In MR images, the median nerve of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients frequently appears flatter than in healthy subjects. The purpose of this work was to develop a metric to quantify localized median nerve deformation rather than global nerve flattening, the hypothesis being that localized median nerve deformation would be elevated in CTS patients. Twelve patients with CTS and 12 matched normals underwent MRI scanning in eight isometrically loaded hand conditions. 2D cross sections of the proximal and distal tunnel were analyzed for nerve cross sectional area, flattening ratio, and a positi

PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that immediate postoperative active mobilization of tendon transfer following claw correction with flexor digitorum superficialis 4-tail pulley insertion will achieve similar outcomes to immobilization in a cast for 3 weeks.
METHODS: In a prospective study, 32 hands with complete ulnar nerve paralysis had flexor digitorum superficialis middle finger 4-tail pulley insertions for 4-digit claw deformity correction and mobilization for tendon transfer rehabilitation on the second day after surgery. Surgical technique was modified to increase the strength of transfe

A mother and daughter are reported with apparently dissimilar syndromes. The mother has a split hand/split foot deformity and the daughter a condition consistent with a diagnosis of LADD syndrome. Absence of clefting and deficient formation of saliva and tears are the main signs that differentiate the LADD from the EEC syndrome. However, no distinct feature is constant between these two autosomal dominant disorders that show great phenotypic variability. This report emphasises the overlap between the LADD and the EEC syndromes.

Five new casses of ectrodactyly are described. Two patients have the syndrome of ectrodactyly, extodermal dysplasia, and clefting (EEC). In one patient with the EEC syndrome, the disorder seems to represent a new mutation. One woman with isolated ectrodactyly has a daughter with the EEC syndrome. The variation in the clinical expression of this disorder among affected members of the same family makes it difficult to determine whether there may be several mutant alleles responsible for ectrodactyly and its related manifestations.

BACKGROUND: Guyon's canal syndrome (GCS) is an uncommon compressive ulnar neuropathy at the wrist, and claw hand deformity could be seen in severe Tpye I cases. Data on whether claw hand deformity could be reversed by surgical treatment is lacking, and we aimed to evaluate the prognosis of these patients.
METHODS: 11 patients with claw hand deformity were enrolled in this retrospective study, and the minimum follow-up was set at 1 year. All patients underwent exploration of the ulnar nerve, decompression of Guyon's canal, and removal of potentially concomitant space-occupying lesions. Clinica

INTRODUCTION: The management of hand deformities of people with neurological impairment is complex and challenging. The use of orthoses to manage hand deformity in clinical practice continues despite low level evidence. Understanding the purpose of an orthosis supported by a biomechanical framework, the Neurological Hand Deformity Classification (NHDC), to identify deforming forces and how to resolve them with appropriate orthotic intervention may reduce controversy surrounding orthosis use.
METHODS: Detailed case descriptions were used to demonstrate how the NHDC can be clinically applied to

Mucolipidosis III (ML-III), or pseudo-Hurler polydystrophy, is an autosomal recessive Hurler-like disorder without mucopolysacchariduria. The diagnosis is challenging for rheumatologists since the musculoskeletal presentation is similar to some rheumatic diseases. We report a case of ML-III in a 16-year-old Taiwanese boy. The characteristic findings of sonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of claw hand deformity are described. A 16-year-old boy was referred to our rheumatologic clinic because of progressive claw hand deformity, multiple joint stiffness and tightness of the skin over

Adult spinal deformity (ASD) represents a challenging area in spinal surgery due to its complexity and potential for postoperative complications. While robotic systems have promised enhanced precision for pedicle screw placement, improved alignment, and potentially fewer complications, the comparative efficacy and morbidity of robotic-assisted (RA) versus free-hand (FH) techniques remains underexplored in the context of ASD. This study aims to compare postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing RA techniques versus FH surgery to manage ASD. A retrospective review was performed and included p

BACKGROUND: Vascular complications, which we rarely encounter during lumbosacral stabilization surgeries, can be life-threatening if they are not treated quickly. These arterial injuries occur during screw insertion. Our presentation with the common iliac artery injury during the decortication process in transverse processes with the "pedicle awl" will be the first case in the literature to our knowledge.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Lumbosacral decompression and stabilization surgery was performed in a 57-year-old patient with L1-S1 spinal stenosis and scoliosis. After the stabilization process was com

Congenital anomalies of the hand and forearm present a complex challenge in plastic and pediatric surgery. We present the case of a 13-month-old child with a congenital left mirror deformity, characterized by the presence of eight digits and two ulnae exhibiting near-perfect bilateral symmetry. A novel palmar-based incision design was employed for the corrective and functional reconstruction of the left hand, which may serve as a reference for the surgical management of similar conditions. Preoperatively, the radial-side middle finger demonstrated palmar opposition against the ulnar aspect of

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hand deformity on upper-limb function and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP). The study included 44 children with hemiplegic CP between the ages of 6 and 14 years (mean age, 10.04 years; SD, 3.1; 23 males, 21 females). The Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) were used, with the Zancolli classification to characterize hand deformities on the more affected side. Upper-limb function was assessed in terms of unilateral capacity (Q
