Correlates of alcohol use among methadone-maintained adults.

This prospective study (n=190) examined correlates of alcohol use from baseline data of a longitudinal trial conducted among moderate and heavy alcohol users receiving methadone maintenance therapy (MMT). The sample included MMT clients who were 18-55 years of age, and were receiving MMT from five large methadone maintenance clinics in the Los Angeles area. Half of the sample was heavy drinkers and nearly half (46%) reported heroin use. Using a structured questionnaire, correlates of heavy alcohol use included White and Hispanic ethnicity, and fair or poor physical health combined with older a

Positive changes in sun-related behavior in Israel (1994-1998).

BACKGROUND: Current preventive measures against skin cancer focus on individual sun protection and early detection. Solar radiation in Israel is powerful, and about one-half of its population is fair skinned. We investigated whether public awareness efforts yielded changes in sun-related behaviors in Israel from 1994 to 1998. METHODS: The Department of Health Promotion in the Ministry of Health in Israel has been conducting an ongoing research on health knowledge, attitude, and practice, including six closed questions about sun-related behaviors in a general questionnaire. Independent samples

Assessment of knowledge and treatment practices of hepatitis B infection in children among health professionals in Krachi districts in Ghana: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains one of the neglected infectious diseases. Children infected with HBV are at higher risk of becoming chronic carriers. Barriers to measures against HBV in children are attributed to inadequate knowledge by some health professionals. This study assessed knowledge and treatment practices of HBV in children among health professionals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among health professionals (185) in three districts in Krachi using a structured questionnaire. Stata version 15 was used to analyze participants' res

Do individuals' attitudes toward immigrants affect their own health? Analysis of 15 European countries.

BACKGROUND: Hostility toward others is related to negative emotions, which is hypothesized to have negative health consequences. In this article, we sought to test the relationship between individuals' attitudes toward immigrants and their self-rated health (SRH) across time in large dataset of 15 European countries. METHODS: We used the 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 waves of the European Social Survey, which include information about attitudes toward immigrants and individuals' SRH. RESULTS: Combining all countries and survey years, we found an association between negative attitudes toward immi

Self-rated health and risk of incident essential tremor: A prospective, population-based study (NEDICES).

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET), a highly-prevalent, progressive, aging-associated neurological disease, poses a significant public health challenge. Aside from its associated motor features, the disease affects cognition in some patients, mood, and morale, and has been associated with increased risk of mortality in the elderly. Studies have not investigated the relationship between self-rated health and risk of ET. We determined whether baseline poor self-rated health was associated with increased risk of incident ET. METHODS: In this prospective, population-based study of people ≥65 years

Identification of intrinsic capacity impairment: diagnostic performance of integrated care for older people (ICOPE) screening tools in Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) framework proposes screening (Step-1) and subsequent in-depth assessment (Step-2) to inform personalised interventions to promote intrinsic capacity (IC) in older adults. We aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of screening approaches against in-depth assessments in Zimbabwe. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited older adults age ≥65 years in urban Zimbabwe. For both Steps 1 and 2, IC was assessed using WHO ICOPE-proposed and/or alternative assessments for seven domains: cognition, locomot

Time trends in health inequalities due to care in the context of the Spanish Dependency Law.

OBJECTIVE: In Spain, responsibility for care of old people and those in situations of dependency is assumed by families, and has an unequal social distribution according to gender and socioeconomic level. This responsibility has negative health effects on the carer. In 2006, the Dependency Law recognised the obligation of the State to provide support. This study analyses time trends in health inequalities attributable to caregiving under this new law. METHODS: Study of trends using two cross-sectional samples from the 2006 and 2012 editions of the Spanish National Health Survey (27,922 and 19

Accumulation of Jail Incarceration and Hardship, Health Status, and Unmet Health Care Need Among Women Who Use Drugs.

BACKGROUND: Jail is frequently described as a "revolving door," which can be profoundly destabilizing to people moving in and out of the system. However, there is a dearth of research attempting to understand the impacts of the accumulation of incarceration events on women who use drugs. We examined the association of the frequency of jail incarceration with hardship, perceived health status, and unmet health care need among women who use drugs. METHODS: Our community-based sample included women who use heroin, methamphetamine, crack cocaine, and/or powder cocaine (N = 624) in Oakland, Califo

Personal RF-EMF exposure from mobile phone base stations during temporary events.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) exposure has increased owing to new communication technologies. Simultaneously, increased exposure to RF-EMF has led to society's growing concern about the possible effects they may have on human health. Many studies have described personal RF-EMF exposure by using personal exposimeters to know a population's daily exposure to mobile phone base stations and to other sources whose installations tend to be permanent. Nonetheless during special events like concerts or fairs, where many people gather, permanent installatio

Estimating Indicators for Assessing Knee Motion Impairment During Gait Using In-Shoe Motion Sensors: A Feasibility Study.

Knee joint function deterioration significantly impacts quality of life. This study developed estimation models for ten knee indicators using data from in-shoe motion sensors to assess knee movement during everyday activities. Sixty-six healthy young participants were involved, and multivariate linear regression was employed to construct the models. The results showed that eight out of ten models achieved a "fair" to "good" agreement based on intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs), with three knee joint angle indicators reaching the "fair" agreement. One temporal indicator model displayed
