[How to avoid hoarseness for operation of schwannoma of the cervical vagus nerve].

OBJECTIVE: To avoid hoarseness for operation of schwannoma of the cervical vagus nerve (SVN). METHODS: From Jan. 1997 to Sept. 2001, ten cases of SVN were operated. The procedures were as follows: Exposing the tumor and the vagus nerve, confirming its origin from the fascicle of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) or the fascicle of non-RLN, making an small incision on the posterolateral surface of the tumor, usually posterior to the internal jugular vein, and then tearing and enlarging the small incision to enucleate the tumor. RESULTS: Two of the four cases of SVN originated from the fascicle

Hoarseness after pulmonary arterial stenting and occlusion of the arterial duct.

We report a 12-year-old girl who had multiple congenital cardiac lesions, specifically an arterial duct, left pulmonary arterial stenosis, an atrial septal defect in the oval fossa, and mild Ebstein's malformation of the tricuspid valve. Therapeutic transcatheter intervention was performed to stent the left pulmonary artery, occlude the arterial duct with a coil, and place a device to close the atrial septal defect. Subsequent to the catheterization, she complained of hoarseness, which was shown to be due to entrapment of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve between the coil used to close the ar

Harmonic emergence in formant zone of a sustained [a] as a parameter for evaluating hoarseness.

In order to test the value of the harmonic emergence in formant zone of a sustained (a) as a parameter for evaluating hoarseness, a multifactorial acoustical investigation was performed in 10 normal and 22 dysphonic subjects. The parameters were: a subjective evaluation (7-degree-scale) of the extent of the hoarseness by 3 trained specialists the phonation quotient the 0-6 kHz/6-10 kHz energy ratio, computed on a long--time--average--spectrum from a reading of a phonetically selected text the harmonic emergence in the bandwidth of the two first formants of a sustained (a). [Etiology, Evaluation and Comprehensive Management of Hoarseness
after Lung Cancer Surgery].

Hoarseness after lung cancer surgery is a common but often underestimated perioperative functional complication. Beyond impairing voice quality, it may involve swallowing dysfunction and compromised airway protection, thereby increasing the risk of aspiration, pulmonary infection, and delayed recovery. Iatrogenic recurrent laryngeal nerve injury is the major cause, closely associated with mediastinal lymph node dissection, with the left lower paratracheal lymph node station as typical high-risk anatomical areas. Nerve injury results from both direct mechanical trauma and indirect mechanisms su

Unusual cause of hoarseness: Arytenoid cartilage dislocation without a traumatic event.

Arytenoid cartilage dislocation is a rare but curable cause of hoarseness and is commonly related to intubation or laryngeal trauma. We present a case of arytenoid cartilage dislocation without a traumatic event in a man who complained of acute hoarseness. An 82-year-old man visited our emergency department complaining of acute hoarseness. He had no history of general anesthesia or laryngeal trauma and had not caught a cold. He showed no abnormal physical findings including the pharynx. Examination using a laryngoscope revealed that the left vocal fold was fixed in the paramedian position. We

Hoarseness and Dermatomyositis: Insights from the Historical Case of Maria Callas.

BACKGROUND: Dermatomyositis (DM) is an autoimmune inflammatory myopathy characterized by proximal muscle weakness and distinctive cutaneous manifestations. While dysphagia is a well-recognized otolaryngologic feature of DM, dysphonia-particularly as an early or isolated manifestation-remains under-recognized and may be overlooked, especially in professional voice users. Maria Callas, one of the most influential opera singers of the twentieth century, experienced a rapid and controversial vocal decline at the peak of her career, the etiology of which has long been debated. METHODS: We conducte

Hoarseness, Quality of Life, and Social Anxiety: A Case-Control Study.

Hoarseness is a common voice symptom that can impair communication and lead to psychosocial difficulties. It has been hypothesized that chronic hoarseness may contribute to elevated social anxiety. This study aimed to assess the impact of hoarseness on quality of life and social anxiety in affected individuals. Thirty-eight patients with chronic hoarseness (voice disorders) and 40 matched healthy controls were evaluated in a prospective case-control study. Quality of life was measured using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire (Physical, Psychological, Social, and Environmental domains). Social anxie

"The Raven Himself Is Hoarse:" Candida dubliniensis fungemia manifesting as an eschar.

A 65-year-old man with diabetes, end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis, coronary artery disease, and a prosthetic aortic valve. He presented to the emergency department with hypothermia (96.6°F), several weeks of anorexia and chills, and bilateral lower extremity tissue necrosis with erythema and edema (Figure 1A). He had a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line 8 weeks prior placed at another hospital for treatment of cellulitis. Laboratory results revealed anemia, azotemia, and leukocytosis (19,200 WBCs/mm3), and he was admitted for sepsis of unknown etiology. (SKINmed. 2022;20

Hoarse cry in a newborn with epidermolysis bullosa simplex, generalized severe.

Hoarse cry and respiratory stridor are the signs of potentially life-threatening laryngeal involvement in selected severe and frequently early lethal subtypes of inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB). We present a newborn with generalized skin blistering and onychodystrophy who developed a hoarse cry and inspiratory stridor. Ultrastructural skin examination revealed tonofilament clumping in basal keratinocytes and genetic testing identified the de novo missense mutation p.Arg125Cys in the KRT14 gene, consistent with EB simplex generalized severe, which is characterized by major morbidity in inf

Voice hoarseness in a patient with underlying Eisenmenger's syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The natural history of patients diagnosed with Eisenmenger's Syndrome typically revolve around the pediatric population. Medical advances have allowed these patients to live longer and present with a different subset of symptoms as a result of the progression of their disease process. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, we discuss a 77-year-old Caucasian female with Eisenmenger's Syndrome presenting with hoarseness. Clinical and imaging studies reveal a left vocal cord paralysis secondary to a progressively enlarging patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and dilation of pulmonary art

A 43-Year-Old Woman With Hoarseness of Voice and Chest Pressure.

A 43-year-old woman with a medical history of cervical cancer treated with curative hysterectomy 12 years earlier developed progressive dyspnea, chest discomfort, and hoarse voice over a 7-month period. The patient never smoked and had no exposure history. Imaging at an outside hospital showed a mediastinal mass with hilar adenopathy (Fig 1A), which was biopsied via endobronchial ultrasound transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) and revealed noncaseating granulomas with surrounding rims of lymphocytes (Fig 1B). The patient was given the diagnosis of sarcoidosis and started on prednisone

[Ramsey-Hunt syndrome with initial syndrome of hoarseness: a case report].

Summary Ramsey-Hunt syndrome is caused by the varicella zoster virus, which mainly affects the facial nerve. The typical clinical features of Ramsey-Hunt syndrome are peripheral facial paralysis and ear herpes. In this case, initial symptoms were hoarseness and coughing, afterwards typical symptom occurred 5 days later which were earache, late-onset herpes, and facial paralysis. Ramsey-Hunt syndrome are difficult to diagnose because of its seemingly unrelated initial symptoms.

Hoarseness of Voice as a Rare Presentation of Tuberculosis: A Case Report Study.

BACKGROUND: Having hoarseness of voice as the first clinical manifestation of tuberculosis is rare. This atypical presentation causes some confusion since other more common conditions, such as laryngeal carcinoma, present similarly and might require more invasive tests to confirm the diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old male presented to the otorhinolaryngology clinic with a four-month history of change in voice. Laryngoscopy demonstrated a right glottic mass, raising suspicion of laryngeal cancer. The computed tomography showed a mass and incidental finding of opacities in lung apices

Vocal Hoarseness and a Subglottic Mass: An Uncommon Diagnosis for a Common Complaint.

We report a patient with tracheopathia osteoplastica (TPO), a rare or perhaps underrecognized disorder, detected in approximately 1 in every 2000 to 5000 patients who undergo bronchoscopy. TPO is marked by proliferation of bony and cartilaginous spurs leading to airway stenosis. Multiple submucosal cartilaginous and osseous nodules can develop in the respiratory tract and may involve the entire trachea and mainstem bronchi. Symptoms may range from a completely silent condition to life-threatening respiratory failure and diagnosis is made based on radiological and bronchoscopic findings. Althou
